You Need to Know About This Ridiculous Fish

- I got to see an Ocean Sunfish (Mola mola) up close and personal at the Monterey Bay Aquarium recently and I fell in love. These things are the superlative of superlatives. They are the biggest bony fish, they lay the most eggs of any vertebrate, and grow the most from egg to full size of any vertebrate. Yes, they're silly looking, but the whole thing about evolution is, whether we can figure out why or not, things don't survive if they aren't good at /something/.
Sea turtles and mola mola, despite having deeply different lineages, actually share a lot of characteristics. They have the same shaped flippers, they both have beaks, they both rely on their size to protect them, and they both create lots of babies in the hopes that only a few will survive (though, Mola mola take this to a different level.) They're also both basically the same shape, which is super weird.
And here's a wild thing, even though sea turtles evolved from land-dwelling reptiles, mola mola-like fish have actually been around for 100 million years while sea turtles have been around for over 200 million years.
Now, I'm just guessing here, but this is possibly because they share a food source. That food source is low quality but abundant. It also doesn't move fast. So the mola mola evolved not for speed, but for efficiency. These flippers (like the ones that turtles and mola have) don't move you fast, but they also don't use much energy.
The fecundity of sunfish might also have something to do with the variability of their prey. Jellies are notorious for being extremely abundant year and then disappearing the next. In a situation like that, you want to have the ability to rapidly increase your population and rapidly reach the age of maturity so that you can take advantage of prey population explosions.

For whatever reason I was completely convinced this was an older video. I think the hair flop just too me back to like, 2012.
Simpler times, man
Yeah, I need a haircut real bad. Thank you for reminding me to call!
When Hank looked like a squeaky voiced teenager and society hadn't yet collapsed. Simpler times...
I definitely also had that same thought!
Should us nerdfighters advocate for a "Return of the Hank-Goatee?" That's when I think i started watching.
Me too!
I'm not a fan of dumping all of your points into defense at the expense of stealth and mobility but hey if it works more power to ya
What if your primary food has a top speed of like 0.2 mph?
Hey look it’s TierZoo
I works. End of the discussion.
TierZoo, Huh?
nobody asked check mark
"Keep Being Lumpy And Magnificent" needs to be on a shirt.
guess you like them big and maybe chunky
Wolfram lol
agreed
I was so excited cuz I saw this and also yes and here's to hoping it's available and plus size and then I saw wolfram's comment and now my soul is crushed just a bit.
Please I need this shirt.
Me: But how do I handle stress?
Hank: Very weird animals
😂 I love living on this beautiful danger ball
We don't need one, we just need flerken or garfield. Basically orange barbaric cat. #kochengoren
“Beautiful danger ball”: most accurate description of earth I’ve heard so far. 😅
Can we have a shirt that says Beautiful Danger Ball on it???
I think Earth is the most safest place in this universe
Keep being lumpy and magnificent. I felt that deep in my soul 😂💚
Yes!
"You're doing GREAT!"
The Swedish name translates as lump fish.
@@tovekauppi1616 Same in Danish.
It's my new battle cry.
Mola mola: exist
Hank Green: "YOU'RE DOING GREAT SWEETIE! I LOVE YOU!"
The first time I saw a mola mola was in Animal Crossing. I thought "huh, all the other things you catch in the ocean are real, I wonder why Nintendo made this up." Now I'm wondering why nature made this up, because it still looks made up.
I had to look up what they are called in swedish and it's just "lump fish" (klumpfisk). Lumpy and magnificent indeed.
In English, lump fish refers to a different but equally misshapen-looking fish
Let's keep this going: we have lumpfish in Sweden, and we call it sjurygg (seven-back)! Like... it has seven or so lumps on its back.
John: Poetic contemplation of humanity and the star from which all life and energy flows...
Hank: LOOK AT THIS WEIRD FISH!! IT'S SO LUMPY I LOVE IT!!!!!

hayk3000 You’re right, my mistake 😔🤙
I'm pretty sure in my native language (Dutch) we call them maanvissen- moon fish!
Another fun language quirk like this; the Dutch describe being rich as having money like water, and the English describe it as having money to burn.
That's all thank you
Louise Rentier, in French too, it’s called a moon fish!
It’s the same in German actually, kinda interesting
+
In Portuguese as well
Same in Ukrainian, Bulgarian and Russian
Can confirm, in Taiwan, we do call them that. Flipped car fish. I don't know why.
There was an event in 2002 at one of the coastal cities to sort of celebrate and raise awareness about the fish, but because so many people thought that going to such an event might bring bad luck (that it would increase the chance of getting into a car crash), few attended. They tried to change the name to something else (to "Mambo fish") but the "flip-car fish" name stuck.
You've reminded me of Zelda: Link's Awakening and the song Manbo's Mambo :)
ua-cam.com/video/mIdELJ9UZi0/v-deo.html
Thanks for helping me realize why it's called that :)

Hank. Why did you yell at me? I never said it wasn't a good fish. :(
It was a great rant though. ^^
Link?
We have the same last name. 😎
Can someone link to rant?
@@johnsnow9210 it's when Hank said "that doesn't mean they're not good fish Brandt", a play on twitter's @dog_rates "they're good dogs Brent".
I feel disappointed that you didn't even try to pronounce "Samogłów"
I think you would have been more disappointed if I'd tried.

It’s good enough to be turned into a pokemon. Hank, I’ll see you on Friday.
That lizard needs to be a pokemon too
Alomolola!! :D
Yes!
Somehow learning about new animals calms me down too. Being pregnant and just overall stressed, I NEEDED this today. Thank you Hank! I hope your stress stays at a manageable level!!!
Jessica E Cassity Have an uneventful rest of your pregnancy, birth, and lovely child.
I too, was lumpy and magnificent in a pregnant way.
Pregnant, lumpy and magnificent here too. Vlogbrothers content just always calms me down and fills me with hope and wonder. There's no other channel that has me so grateful during pregnancy as this one :)
Merry Christmas Jessica I hope your birth of your child was healthy and successful and that your new roommate will be great healthy addition to your family for years to come.
I should be studying Middle High German but now I'm dedicated to becoming a sunfish expert.
Lunedia From my own experience with Middle High German in university, I can tell you that being a sunfish expert would be the better choice. And I have no experience with sunfish at all. 😆
Condolences. I'm dreading my upcoming exam...
@@paraboo8994 Me too! Best of luck to you, I'm sure it'll turn out well!
I am loving all this nature content on Vlogbrothers lately! The aquarium visit (that was one of my favorite Vlgobrothers videos) and then the micro cosmos and now this.
There was a mola mola there in that vid who got fed by hand! That's the good life.
I wanna be as excited about life as Hank is about this mola mola
Hank telling the Mola Mola to keep being lumpy and magnificent is the motivation we all need
I am only slightly annoyed at this fish for giving me hope of catching a shark in animal crossing just to find out it's this fish
The best part of this is that sharks ARE fish.
I do know what you mean, though. XD
Exactly what I was just thinking
I want the shirt of just hank’s head saying: “you’re doing great!”. Like, can we get on this? Please? 🙏🏻
A message for the ages: no matter who you are, who laughs at you or what names they call you... keep being lumpy and magnificent!
I like ocean sunfish, mainly because they're worth 4000 bells on Animal Crossing.
This is the content I signed up for
Could anyone please call ZeFrank and beg him to make "True Facts: The Sunfish"?
Hank getting excited about weird animals should become a series, like thoughts from places.
I've read the tumblr rant (and at the time agreed) but hearing and seeing your enthusiasm for sunfish has changed my mind 😌
I'm a fish person, so while I didn't agree with the rant when I found it, it made me laugh SO HARD! XD
When I showed my parents your video about Monterrey bay aquarium (hyping themand up for an upcoming trip), my mom pointed at the mola mola and exclaimed "what is that?!". My response was this video, so good foresight for making this.
Summary of this video's comments:
Give me t-shirts of every line
The reason they look so weird is: they get born upright like a regualar fish, when they become teenagers they start swimming horizontally like a ray, when they become an adult they change again.
In portuguese its name is "peixe-lua" (moon fish), as someone who loves the moon, I think that's a good reason to love this fish.
The lizard at 0:25 is using the Bubble-Head Charm from Harry Potter
I am looking forward to all of the future videos in this series, because this one was very good. I also love the mola mola. Thanks for a fun video, Hank!
When ur an animal so ridiculous, the pokemon compamy just paints you pink and calls you a pokemon (Alomomola)
I'd absolutely buy a t-shirt with a picture of the Earth labeled "Beautiful Danger Ball." Just sayin'.
Yessssss! Finally! Some proper appreciation of mola mola!!!
Hank, I'm a marine educator and for ages I've been wishing you would do a SciShow marine biology season. I would LOVE to work with you on that to make it a reality.
You can see my presenting style on my channel.
I like this series better than a hypothetical scene by scene breakdown of Smash Mouth’s All Star series.
You Vlog bros make my days better. I also just saw you linked out to our Mola Mola video and I am extremely grateful! Keep on being the good in the world ❤️
This was literally the wholesome and wonderful video I needed today. I love this, and if it becomes a series I will watch every single one forever!
Oh my.. so the zoo near me has one of these with only one eye and I love him. I love to visit him and he just chills and looks like he's smiling and he's just wonderful and I've loved him for years.
That's so pure and wholesome. I hope he's still doing well
"beautiful danger ball" sounds about right
I got even more happy when Hank mentioned polish name for Mola mola!
I love watching Hank be excited about things so much!
So happy when I saw this in my feed! I’ve read a bit about ocean sunfish before, but I didn’t know this much! Can’t understand why people wouldn’t like them. They just seem CHILL.
This video about my favourite fish, by one of my favourite youtubers made my day! I don’t care what anybody says; The Mola mola fish is BEAUTIFUL and WEIRD and it’s wonderful!
It’s my favorite fish, too!
Balloonfish y'all you have to tell me about it.
why is this your favourite fish?!
Upon seeing that Anolis at the beginning of the video, my mouth dropped so low that I drooled.
"...keep being lumpy and magnificent!" *feels belly* "I'm not a sunfish, but I'll take it"
Keep being lumpy and magnificent: May I borrow that and use it as my daily motivation to continue being on this danger ball? ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Beautiful Danger Ball 😊
When I first saw this fish at an aquarium in Osaka, I joked to my friend, “It looks like God was just about done making the world when he saw he still had some remnants of plasticine 🤔 .”
Hank, your passion, enthusiasm, and unbridled happiness regarding this fish has made my day so bright. And it's raining here in Jacksonville, Florida. Thanks for making this Florida day bright!
It's so funny you call them sunfish because in German their name translates to moonfish (Mondfisch)!
Same thing in Portugal where they are called peixe-lua!🙂
Same in Turkish where they are called (aybaligi)
It's also moonfish in Hungarian. I suspect one guy with his own travel accounts from the Pacific/Atlantic came back to Europe and dubbed it moonfish, and most everyone agreed to take him on his word that it should be called that way. Then translations were made, again without feeling the need to make a distinction.
Except for English. The English are strange.
My first exposure to the mola mola was the Pokémon Alomomola, which is a pink water-type Pokémon shaped like a mola mola but also like a heart (it’s nickname is the “caring Pokémon” which I love very much)
"Keep being lumpy and magnificent!"
Words I needed today.
I remember seeing a Mola Mola when I was at an aquarium in Denmark (before the fire, of which it died, sadly). I was 5, but remember it so clearly. Such a stupid-looking fish, but I’ve been obsessed with them ever since.
The most dumbest and cruel thing is throwing plastic in water. If we hear about a single water animal getting choked to death by eating plastic, it feels so bad but the fact that this happens to a huge number of sea creatures is insane.
Not just oceans but even on land😔
I forgot how good this channel is. This used to be my shit in middle and early high school
beautiful danger ball
aaaaah
also, we love you mola mola!
Hank your love of those fish has made me hate it a bit less. It's still my least favourite thing in the ocean, but I hate it just a little bit less now.
Damn I am early. But anyway, great video, I love fish 🐠
Nature is my favorite thing. Tbh though, i don't care nearly as much about the Mola Mola as i do about that freaking BUBBLE LIZARD. That is so cool!
I only know about the Ocean Sunfish because I play so much Animal Crossing 🤓
same.
That ridiculous fish is built for cutting down on predating jelly fish if you are surrounded by stingers like box jellyfish or Portuguese man of war, you would want that fella to be right beside you. Great show and merry Christmas.
Please put “Keep Being Lumpy and Magnificent” shirts on dftba
I first encountered this fish in Animal Crossing for the GameCube and have sought it out ever since. I've seen them in the Lisbon and Monterey Bay aquariums and they're MAGNIFICENT. :D
Mola mola is perfect just the way it is and I'll hear no criticisms. This was excellent!
“The nice thing though, is that now I’m old, so I understand this is happening and I know the solution!” A bonafide PSA on the benefits of aging e.g., wisdom!
Just checked, and the sunfish is called moonfish in German. Somehow I find that pleasing
It's also called moonfish in Portuguese. 😉
„Keep being lumpy and magnificent!“ might be my new life motto.
I was not expecting a video to be posted this early.
Hank to all the Mola mola in the world: "You're doing great sweety!"
Hank: I am very stressed
Also Hank: *I LOVE THIS FISH!*
He went from that to that in less than a minute
Oh Hank !😂
i love it when hank gets all excited about science!!!
I only knew about the sunfish via Holy Fucking Science! Thanks Hank!
Edit: haha I'm early!
Edit: Is KEEP BEING LUMPY AND MAGNIFICENT the new DFTBA?
KBLAM
Late to this vid, but like YES GO SUN FISH THEY ARE SO WONDERFUL AND WEIRD AND THEY HAVE FOUGHT THE GOOD FIGHT AND EARNED THEIR PLACE IN OUR PRESENT THROUGH LOTS OF SELECTION THAT DEEMED THEIR LUMPY MAGNIFICENCE EVOLUTIONARILY ADVANTAGEOUS ok. I love them too.
A little sad that you didn't go into their temperature regulation capabilities, they're very interesting animals.
I really like learning about knew animals from you. You should make this a whole new channel and series.
The most unique fish is the Filet o Fish. It doesn't swim, it just sits in between two buns
I love Hank's enthusiasm.
Very weird animals- Hank Green 2019
"This Beautiful Danger Ball" is my heavy metal band name.
That phrase really stuck with me too.
I'm so glad there is someone else who loves sunfish as much as I do
THANKS FOR LINKING ADDITIONAL MOLA MOLA VIDEOS IN THE END
'Beautiful Danger Ball' is my new favorite term for Earth.
I love them. Funnily enough, we call them "Moon Fish" in German. Which is a completely different family in English. Either name is beautiful in its own right and Mola mola are wonderful examples of how evolution plays tricks to get big.
I petition for an entire scishow tangent episode to be dedicated to weird a** animals
I second this petition!
I used to be absolutely petrified of Mola Mola when I was a kid
In German they're called "Mondfisch" (moonfish) and I love those sweet, derpy looking sun-moon-whatever fish lumps. :D
I would watch another 10 minutes of Hank being excited about this derp fish
This made me feel much better, thank you Hank!!!!
I had no idea that was the definition of plankton! Now I am discovering all sorts of strange megaplankton that I had no idea about
I'll be honest. I only heard about them from your video about the monterey bay aquarium and it was just love at first sight.
I don’t know why, but this video felt very much like 2009 Vlogbrothers Hank. I dig it.
I love everything about this video :) It encapsulates everything I love about this channel, passion, wonder, excitement and discovery. I was smiling the entire time. Thank you for infusing my day with sun (fish)!
There’s also a Pokémon based on this fish. It’s called Alomomola. You’d probably like to know about another fish that inspired the Pokémon Bruxish: the humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa (or reef triggerfish).
I’m terrified of fish. Despite my better judgement, I made the mistake of watching this video and now I’m going to have nightmares tonight about that giant fish. Dammit!
It's like evolution created this on a Friday afternoon when the workshop clock was at about quarter to pub. It was like, what's the bare minimum bits we need to make a fish?
I'm late to the party. Discovered you on Crash Course Philosophy. Here for it, man.
Mola mola is also a really fun name to keep repeating quickly!
I went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium on Friday and spent a whole 45 minutes just cry laughing about how much I love ocean sunfish. My boys! My beautifully stupid boys!!!😂❤️❤️
The sea turtle comparison is a really interesting one tbh, but at the same time they still seem so
idk
radically different?
But then when it comes to hunting jellyfish it goes to show there's multiple ways to skin a cat
