Swedish is easy for English speakers. Half of it is the same as Northern English dialects, and most of the rest is pretty similar to Chaucerian or even Shakespearean English. If you were paying attention in school, you should have no great problems.
This is similar to how a driving instructor taught me when I forgot to check my blind spot... "and there you just killed a cyclist". I never forget to check anymore lol
He needs to start speaking with you in german all the time, trust me, you really need to be constantly immersed to learn quickly. And btw exercices like the one in this video are really good! Its a real life situation where you need to use german. Learn with many different authentic situations. You got this!!

I just know I struggled with getting fluent in french for a long time before getting my ex and myself to stop switching to german or english all the time. Even if you know the techniques, sometimes it's hard to stick to them.
That's kinda normal if there isn't that much language support for your native language. E.g. Duolingo only offers 4 courses for German speakers, and only 2 when I started to use Duolingo. All the languages I wanted to learn only had courses from English. So just 5 years after starting to learn English at school, I started to learn all the languages I couldn't do at school from English. It's not that difficult. The only annoying thing is when English lacks a feature that both German and the language I'm learning have, resulting in me making mistakes in that feature in the other language, even though it's the same as in German.
I too am a native Bavarian speaker than had to learn German in school and then later my English teacher only spoke German not Bavarian! The struggle is real!

If one's english is too bad they quickly bring someone who is fluent. I thought this was normal until I went to racist countries like Japan and Spain who refuse to speak english. It's so cringe. I don't like many things about english syntax and grammar but as hospital and airport staff in Europe to not speak english, french and spanish is embarrassing and xenophobic. BTW, I know in Romanian hospitals, airport and the police speak english because I have an ethnic name so first thing when they see my papers before they hear me they ask me in english if I speak romanian.

I had to call an ambulance in Germany after 3 months living in there. I spoke English, they were pissed at me, and they hung up the phone, but still ambulance arrived in 15 minutes😅❤ thank you ❤ medical attention was excellent 👌🎉❤❤
I srsly don't care if people coming here speak english or german. We just need at least one language in common, and english is the most common one in Europe. So it's on them for being lazy in school, I had to learn 3
Well, it's not a good reputation for the emergency - call center.. But at least they got the address properly. But this situation is definitely part of the basic English lessons at school... And should be part of the call center training as well.. 🤔 But in another country I had the opposite : They understood English, but the medical treatment was poor... So.. Better this way! 😉

Well in the GDR (old East part of Germany) they NEVER learnt any english. The west was the enemy, which adds up to the problem that most germans don't speak much english, especially people 40/50+.

"Mein Mann hat Schmerzen (my husband is in pain)" or "Mein Mann hat sich weh getan (my husband has gotten himself hurt)" would be more accurate. However, when she said "Meinn Mann tut weh" the "responder" responded with "Ihr Mann tut Ihnen weh?! (Your husband is hurting you!?) Which she then confirmed. What the responder understood was quite locical to infer from what she was saying, so easily misunderstood
I phoned an ambulance is Spain once and the guy told me to just speak English because he couldn't understand my Spanish. I had been living and working in Spain for 4 years at this point. I was more upset with this than why I was phoning them.
Two months ago I had to call immigration in the USA to make sure I could work at my new job... I have been speaking English off and on since I was 6 years old. They had to transfer me to a live person, because the automatic voice operator couldn't understand my "accent". My boss laughed so hard, and said that until I told them in the office they thought my first language was English! 😅 I am on the phones for my job in English. The people I speak with don't hear whatever immigration heard. Lol.
That was kind of what motivated me to learn German. After moving for about 3 months, I got stuck in an elevator with my baby. All signs were in German, and when I call emergency number in the lift, they told me only German, no English. Luckily, I had very basic German and could tell them where I was and understood what they were asking for. Update: did not expect 600+ likes over night 😅 The emergency was to facility management, so I did not expect them to speak English. German is not a difficult language if you know English, as English is a Germanic language, however, it is extremely difficult to get it wrong, conjugations and such. Learning German in Germany made it easy for me, as it was immersive and I joined the same class as the integration programme for university students, was able to reach proficiency within 9 months at B2 level. Through understanding the language, I have learnt to love the country, culture and people more.

Tourists: The doctors of a country are there for the population of that respective country. The only language they need to speak is the official language of the country. Does this mean they cannot speak English? No, of course not. Doctors have studied, and of course, they have learned English during their studies. Can we expect them to speak English? No, we cannot, but they can still do it. At least almost everywhere in the world - I wouldn't be so sure about the medicine man from the Ukabunga tribe, of course. It's also foolish to argue that someone would die in an accident just because the doctor can't speak with the victim. Life-threatening injuries are generally obvious to the doctor. And of course i find it good they can speak Englisch. The emergency services of a country are there for the population of that respective country. The only language they need to speak is the official language of that country. Does this mean they cannot speak English? No, of course not, especially in a country as advanced and with as educated people as Germany. Can we expect them to speak English? No, we cannot, but they can still do it. The elevator emergency number usually leads to the facility management of the house. Facility manager don't need to be good in foreign languages but in handy craftings. Also often elderly immigrants work as facility managers. They often have other mother tongues than German and if they had englisch lessons about 30-50 years ago.. well... 🤷♀️
I know these are skits but a good practice session when in new country/language! My poor husband just 2 weeks after we married was in a pickle when I had an acute anaphylactic reaction. My eyes swole shut and I couldn't see. He had the hardest time explaining what was going on to get a ride to the hospital. We got a ride and I survived so all is well!
What is there to explain than "send the ambulance right now" and giving the address? They medics can figure it out on the spot even if they couldn't speak the same language.

There aren't unlimited ambulances and there's people calling them for stupid reasons.. a lot of times, you might get someone calling an ambulance for a medical problem they've been having for weeks that is absolutely not an emergency. So of course, you wouldn't send the ambulance there right away if someone else calls with a heart attack or something.
@@Shishikasuchan All they need to know is the priority and if they can't understand what you are saying, any person with common sense would treat it as highest priority until better info is obtained. The ambulance is on the way already while they keep talking to you. So yes the default is to send the ambulance immediately when the address is known unless it is immediately clear it's not an emergency
@@cyberfunk3793I think phone operators have orders to talk a lor with the caller and figure out if it’s REALLY an ambulance level emergency or not I recently called 911 (the swedish equicalent) when I saw an old lady crash on her bike, laying on the pavement screaming ”AAAAARGH I broke my foot!” She was impossible to talk to so I called and said ”send an ambulance we got a broken foot” They told me to wait, check her foot, talk to her etc. She was not communicative at first but after 5 minutes it turned out she was fine and just maybe had a light sprain. could walk home after I helped her up (the 911 operator was with me on the phone the entire time) That’s why - lots of calls are not REALLY ambulance worthy - if they would send em out willy nilly they would risk running out of ambulances for mega serious emergencies So you gotta convince em it’s serious And ”puffy eyes” doesn’t sound all that serious I mean; sure you can say ”my language bad, big emergency - send ambulance” and they might go anyways … but if you’re decent at the language they will try to ask detailed questions
you know... first thing my dad did once he met my mum (who was from poland, directly after the fall of the berlin wall), was to exclusively use german with her in germany (and for him in return to exclusively use polish when visiting her family). I was so lucky compared to most. I was the first in my generation and none of the older folk spoke English to me. I'm so grateful because I'm the only one in my generation who can carry on a conversation in Polish.
This is such a real post! My bf & I live in Greece a few weeks a year. He is Greek & speaks Greek fluently. I am Colombian & speak Spanish. Fortunately, we both speak English. I just asked him 1) what is the emergency number in Greece & 2) how do I ask for help? 😂
You know I know this is parody in a lot of ways but he brings up a really valid point and I think anyone visiting another country should at least know some more basics than what we tend to learn first or are told to learn first. Here I was taught to learn things like how to at least order food or ask for the bathroom or directions, but literally no one ever mentions learning how to handle an emergency like this and now I'm second guessing what I have been learning in Chinese (like asking how family is or how to order food lmao) and am more eager to learn how to say "help help I've fallen and I cant get up!" 😂😂
It's obvious the emergency services in civilized countries should at least understand some basic English or at least have one person on shift that can do it. Nobody can expect tourists that go to several countries learn each language. I'm in France now, can speak about 5 words of the language but have survived fine so far. @@Scarlett.Granger I'm not second guessing learning lol. I'm still going strong between Duolingo and a Chinese woman nearby that owns a store with her family. She's been a wonderful teacher. It just makes me second guess in the sense of maybe going beyond my current level and lessons and learning how to say some quick phrases in emergencies. I just feel it's important and for someone like Uyen, that has lived and will continue to live in another country with another language outside of her first one, to probably learn some of those things specifically at that stage. Maybe not so much for short travels like the other commenter mentioned but assuming all emergency workers will know English just because they deem a country as "civilized" (a term I find to be obnoxiously ignorant when referring to people and cultures in general) or not is just meh to me. Hope they never have to deal with an emergency when there is a language barrier. 🙄

I could understand it. China has 1/3 of the world's population, and a coulture that's very unconnected to western society. I could imagine the same for Japan or Russia as well... Or a francophonic African country... Not every place in the world speaks English, and if you travel there, you have your safety to consider. Just because you're a tourist from a rich country doesn't mean 'they will handle it' taking care of you just like you were at home. There are travel destinations where you need to prepare more carefully. Not every place is a tourist pool hotel where all the staff and half of the town speaks English so they can serve the tourists.

Western or not their first language isn't English and while I understand that it's one of the most spoken languages on the planet, so is French, and no one would bash an American or Canadian emergency worker for not knowing French despite there being heavy French speaking populations in both countries lol. I think it's both silly and potentially dangerous to assume just because a country is a Western one that they would all or should all be fluent in English if and when it's not even their primary language and likely don't come across it as often as people think. At best you'd be able to find at least a translator for you, hopefully, if all the staff only speak a specific language or aren't fluent enough in English in order even get the jist without some type of lost in translation type situation. Granted I do see most places like say France or Germany at the very least having translators for English speakers on staff in most areas like these but people shouldn't just assume that's a given.
In France, you can send a written message to 114. If the person is not fluent in English, at least they can use an automatic translator or show the text to someone.
Yes, same in Germany, they speak different languages in the emergency too. BUT: what about the bakery, the neighbour, the friends of your child... You need to learn the language of the country you actually live in!
Not even knowing a language properly can help in high-stress situations. My grandma came over from France and spoke fluent English when my grandfather had his first heart attack. She lost her English completely. 30+ years of practice and experience gone in a heartbeat. Luckily one of my uncles was there to call 911.
That's obviously an exaggeration. Uyen's German is pretty good, first of all she recently got a certification, and second of all she's fluent enough to order a Döner kebab.
I also sincerely doubt that the emergency number people (I forgot the word) in German would not understand English. I mean, if so? That is horrifying, to the point that my chronically ill Norwegian arse will scratch Germany off the list of potential countries to have a holiday in if so.
@@Usortertthey often don't. Whether there is an english-speaker or not depends on who is on shift and willing to take the call, from my experience there is no provision for having english-speakers on staff in an organised way.
She should try an immersion school. I learned conversational french in about a month by studying hard and being in a school where they forced me to speak everyday. Try it xx
@@AliciaChenauxgerman classes and immersion classes are completely different things. In regular classes, you speak English and study vocab and grammar tables. In immersion classes you are forced to speak only the target language from day one, which is a way more effective way to learn
There is something to be said for mandatory language skills in the country one inhabits. At the very least key words like "bathroom", "doctor", "police", "help", and the translation for any allergies you have, along with your address.
Oh that's the problem! As a native speaker I never actually had to learn the language the way others have to. Meaning I never had to turn into an aggressive person! Someone learning german later in life = turn aggressive Native germans = either you are or aren't an aggressive person (Please don't take this seriously, it's just an idea that popped into my mind while reading this comment.)

German-German (if I recall correctly) it's almost "Schemie" wheras Austrian-German opts for "Kemie". I will forever continue to like the Austrian-German version of this and "Marille" better.

Swedish is easy for English speakers. Half of it is the same as Northern English dialects, and most of the rest is pretty similar to Chaucerian or even Shakespearean English. If you were paying attention in school, you should have no great problems.

That's kinda normal if there isn't that much language support for your native language. E.g. Duolingo only offers 4 courses for German speakers, and only 2 when I started to use Duolingo. All the languages I wanted to learn only had courses from English. So just 5 years after starting to learn English at school, I started to learn all the languages I couldn't do at school from English. It's not that difficult. The only annoying thing is when English lacks a feature that both German and the language I'm learning have, resulting in me making mistakes in that feature in the other language, even though it's the same as in German.
I too am a native Bavarian speaker than had to learn German in school and then later my English teacher only spoke German not Bavarian! The struggle is real!

In Romania airport and hospital staff speak english and some french. If one's english is too bad they quickly bring someone who is fluent. I thought this was normal until I went to racist countries like Japan and Spain who refuse to speak english. It's so cringe.
I don't like many things about english syntax and grammar but as hospital and airport staff in Europe to not speak english, french and spanish is embarrassing and xenophobic.
BTW, I know in Romanian hospitals, airport and the police speak english because I have an ethnic name so first thing when they see my papers before they hear me they ask me in english if I speak romanian.

However German or dialects there of is spoken in a lot more countries. Germany, Austria, Switzerland and parts of Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, France and Italy.
Well in the GDR (old East part of Germany) they NEVER learnt any english. The west was the enemy, which adds up to the problem that most germans don't speak much english, especially people 40/50+.

However, when she said "Meinn Mann tut weh" the "responder" responded with "Ihr Mann tut Ihnen weh?! (Your husband is hurting you!?) Which she then confirmed.

Two months ago I had to call immigration in the USA to make sure I could work at my new job... I have been speaking English off and on since I was 6 years old. They had to transfer me to a live person, because the automatic voice operator couldn't understand my "accent". My boss laughed so hard, and said that until I told them in the office they thought my first language was English! 😅 I am on the phones for my job in English. The people I speak with don't hear whatever immigration heard. Lol.

Because foreigners' accent is difficult to get so when in an emergency or in a hurry it's easier to understand English.
That was kind of what motivated me to learn German.
After moving for about 3 months, I got stuck in an elevator with my baby. All signs were in German, and when I call emergency number in the lift, they told me only German, no English. Luckily, I had very basic German and could tell them where I was and understood what they were asking for.

The emergency was to facility management, so I did not expect them to speak English.
German is not a difficult language if you know English, as English is a Germanic language, however, it is extremely difficult to get it wrong, conjugations and such. Learning German in Germany made it easy for me, as it was immersive and I joined the same class as the integration programme for university students, was able to reach proficiency within 9 months at B2 level.
Through understanding the language, I have learnt to love the country, culture and people more.
To be fair, an emergency number where they are not able to speak English is very weird to say the least...

Does this mean they cannot speak English? No, of course not. Doctors have studied, and of course, they have learned English during their studies. Can we expect them to speak English? No, we cannot, but they can still do it. At least almost everywhere in the world - I wouldn't be so sure about the medicine man from the Ukabunga tribe, of course. It's also foolish to argue that someone would die in an accident just because the doctor can't speak with the victim. Life-threatening injuries are generally obvious to the doctor. And of course i find it good they can speak Englisch.

The elevator emergency number usually leads to the facility management of the house.
Facility manager don't need to be good in foreign languages but in handy craftings. Also often elderly immigrants work as facility managers. They often have other mother tongues than German and if they had englisch lessons about 30-50 years ago.. well... 🤷♀️

I know these are skits but a good practice session when in new country/language! My poor husband just 2 weeks after we married was in a pickle when I had an acute anaphylactic reaction. My eyes swole shut and I couldn't see. He had the hardest time explaining what was going on to get a ride to the hospital. We got a ride and I survived so all is well!
What is there to explain than "send the ambulance right now" and giving the address? They medics can figure it out on the spot even if they couldn't speak the same language.

There aren't unlimited ambulances and there's people calling them for stupid reasons.. a lot of times, you might get someone calling an ambulance for a medical problem they've been having for weeks that is absolutely not an emergency. So of course, you wouldn't send the ambulance there right away if someone else calls with a heart attack or something.

The ambulance is on the way already while they keep talking to you. So yes the default is to send the ambulance immediately when the address is known unless it is immediately clear it's not an emergency

I recently called 911 (the swedish equicalent) when I saw an old lady crash on her bike, laying on the pavement screaming ”AAAAARGH I broke my foot!” She was impossible to talk to so I called and said ”send an ambulance we got a broken foot”
They told me to wait, check her foot, talk to her etc. She was not communicative at first but after 5 minutes it turned out she was fine and just maybe had a light sprain. could walk home after I helped her up (the 911 operator was with me on the phone the entire time)
That’s why - lots of calls are not REALLY ambulance worthy - if they would send em out willy nilly they would risk running out of ambulances for mega serious emergencies

you know... first thing my dad did once he met my mum (who was from poland, directly after the fall of the berlin wall), was to exclusively use german with her in germany (and for him in return to exclusively use polish when visiting her family).

You know I know this is parody in a lot of ways but he brings up a really valid point and I think anyone visiting another country should at least know some more basics than what we tend to learn first or are told to learn first. Here I was taught to learn things like how to at least order food or ask for the bathroom or directions, but literally no one ever mentions learning how to handle an emergency like this and now I'm second guessing what I have been learning in Chinese (like asking how family is or how to order food lmao) and am more eager to learn how to say "help help I've fallen and I cant get up!" 😂😂
It's obvious the emergency services in civilized countries should at least understand some basic English or at least have one person on shift that can do it. @@Scarlett.Granger I'm not second guessing learning lol. I'm still going strong between Duolingo and a Chinese woman nearby that owns a store with her family. She's been a wonderful teacher. It just makes me second guess in the sense of maybe going beyond my current level and lessons and learning how to say some quick phrases in emergencies. I just feel it's important and for someone like Uyen, that has lived and will continue to live in another country with another language outside of her first one, to probably learn some of those things specifically at that stage. Maybe not so much for short travels like the other commenter mentioned but assuming all emergency workers will know English just because they deem a country as "civilized" (a term I find to be obnoxiously ignorant when referring to people and cultures in general) or not is just meh to me. Hope they never have to deal with an emergency when there is a language barrier. 🙄

Or a francophonic African country... Not every place in the world speaks English, and if you travel there, you have your safety to consider. Just because you're a tourist from a rich country doesn't mean 'they will handle it' taking care of you just like you were at home. There are travel destinations where you need to prepare more carefully. Not every place is a tourist pool hotel where all the staff and half of the town speaks English so they can serve the tourists.

Western or not their first language isn't English and while I understand that it's one of the most spoken languages on the planet, so is French, and no one would bash an American or Canadian emergency worker for not knowing French despite there being heavy French speaking populations in both countries lol. I think it's both silly and potentially dangerous to assume just because a country is a Western one that they would all or should all be fluent in English if and when it's not even their primary language and likely don't come across it as often as people think. At best you'd be able to find at least a translator for you, hopefully, if all the staff only speak a specific language or aren't fluent enough in English in order even get the jist without some type of lost in translation type situation. Granted I do see most places like say France or Germany at the very least having translators for English speakers on staff in most areas like these but people shouldn't just assume that's a given.

Yes, same in Germany, they speak different languages in the emergency too. BUT: what about the bakery, the neighbour, the friends of your child... You need to learn the language of the country you actually live in!

Not even knowing a language properly can help in high-stress situations. My grandma came over from France and spoke fluent English when my grandfather had his first heart attack. She lost her English completely. 30+ years of practice and experience gone in a heartbeat. Luckily one of my uncles was there to call 911.
Stress/panic does that :/ Even in their native language, people freeze up and become unable to speak coherently during emergencies sometimes.

That's obviously an exaggeration. Uyen's German is pretty good, first of all she recently got a certification, and second of all she's fluent enough to order a Döner kebab.
I also sincerely doubt that the emergency number people (I forgot the word) in German would not understand English. I mean, if so? That is horrifying, to the point that my chronically ill Norwegian arse will scratch Germany off the list of potential countries to have a holiday in if so.

@@Usortertthey often don't. Whether there is an english-speaker or not depends on who is on shift and willing to take the call, from my experience there is no provision for having english-speakers on staff in an organised way.

She should try an immersion school. I learned conversational french in about a month by studying hard and being in a school where they forced me to speak everyday. Try it xx
I think she was already in school? I don't know about immersion school, but I'm pretty sure she was in German classes at school.
@@AliciaChenauxgerman classes and immersion classes are completely different things. In regular classes, you speak English and study vocab and grammar tables. In immersion classes you are forced to speak only the target language from day one, which is a way more effective way to learn

There is something to be said for mandatory language skills in the country one inhabits. At the very least key words like "bathroom", "doctor", "police", "help", and the translation for any allergies you have, along with your address.

Oh that's the problem! As a native speaker I never actually had to learn the language the way others have to. Meaning I never had to turn into an aggressive person!
Someone learning german later in life = turn aggressive
Native germans = either you are or aren't an aggressive person

@@cozylyxa thats actually pretty well put. feli from germany said in one of her videos where her (american) boyfriend is challenged to pronounce german words that these words are actually pronounced very softly and its interesting because he, who speaks english which 'sounds' generally softer, struggles with pronouncing german anything but aggressive and hard. i guess its really just the way the sounds a produced and from which basis youre starting

The different ways of pronouncing it with German-German and Austrian-German. German-German (if I recall correctly) it's almost "Schemie" wheras Austrian-German opts for "Kemie". I will forever continue to like the Austrian-German version of this and "Marille" better.
