The best video yet Benjie!! You have an amazing family, all are wonderful inside and outside!! Thank you soooooo much for sharing that amazing catch with us (your neighbors) we enjoyed it thoroughly!! One of the kindest families we know!! Truly blessed to live next to you all!!
Thank you! Yes, persistence and patience for sure. Definitely applies to me. But it’s also helpful to have a plan as well as being able to adjust based on what we see. With that, the odds can turn in our favor. I’m still figuring out all the skill stuff so I lean on the patience part a LOT! 😜
wifey is beautiful but then again so is the entire family! i love the peace and true sense of family you guys exude! thats what fishing is all about having fun for the whole family and everyone had a part! look forward to seeing more from y'all. have fun brother and i really enjoyed your family as well as the video 👍🏿🙋🏿♂️✌🏿
I appreciate the comment and thanks for watching Bob! The trebles on the Lucky Craft 110 is a size 6. For the drop shot I like to nose hook swimbaits with a size Owner Mosquito. 20 lb is definitely ok to catch halibut and many use that. Personally, I like using 12 lb fluoro leader or straight braid most of the time. Hope that helps!
Benjie Kim Fishing no man I have not been filming. Spots up my way are extremely obvious and difficult to hide location when filming. I need to get back on the UA-cam grind I been to busy tweaking with motors and being a general spaz lol
Thank you brotha! Gotta love the Korean connection 🤙🤙!! I love using both. Perhaps I’m foolish but I love throwing the lc and tho I’ve lost my share, the moment I stopped worrying about losing one was the moment I started catching with em. Tight lines and blessings to you.
Thank you for the encouragement. I do hope to grow but most important is to enjoy every moment, get better every time I fish, and hopefully be of service to those that watch. Tight lines and wishing you a great week 🤙
Thanks so much! Legal Hali can be quite the grind...I got burned out earlier this year and spent all summer chasing beans but now it’s back to finding these guys. Hopefully I can scratch out a few more this year. I watched your new vid this morning, great job as usual, I’ll be sure to comment soon!
Thank you for the kind words and watching! Huntington is a good place to start, I would work north of the pier all the way towards the BC inlet. North and south of the BC inlet can also be a good starting point. Newport can also be very productive, I just haven't spent that much time on that stretch this past year. Hope that helps.
Great video! I am in Oxnard and hope to do some surf fishing. I work at Pt. Mugu so hoping to do some fishing at lunch. You have a beautiful wife and family! Hope to see more catch and cooks from you!
Thank you so much for the positivity and kind words. Means a lot to me man. I’ve never fished Mugu but from what I hear there are some big perch in those waters. Would be pretty sweet to catch some slabs at lunchtime!! Good luck!!
I’ve never kept a bsp but I’m definitely planning to do a catch and cook soon! Will be fishing the central coast at the end of this month so will hopefully get on some slabs then. I’ve heard everything from they’re one of the best eating surf fish, to their meat being too mushy. Hopefully I’ll find out that their delicious! I’ve literally only kept 1 fish from the surf my entire life but I’ll be doing occasional catch & cooks and bsp is next on the list! 🤙
Time of day isn’t as important as water conditions imo. You want calm water, in other words a mild tide swing...in or out, doesn’t matter. High or low tide, really depends on the beach and what the structure is like at each location. If the water is calm and the structure is properly filled, you’re good. This is why folks say 2 hours before and after...these are the windows that water is most likely to be prime. But that’s just a general rule of thumb. Hope this helps.
Yea for sure, thanks man. I actually tried but my knife skills are pretty suspect and when I saw how little meat I’d get on this little guy, I gave up. 😬😭
LOVE IT! keep it up. its not easy on the heart and mind to loss those LC's in structure. my sincerest condolences to the LC's lost in action lol. BUT, next time you have a halibut and fillet it and there is meat on the bones. (always for me, and ive done it a few times) get a small spoon and scrape the remainder off into a bowl. add a little sriracha and ryu (chili oil) and you have some great spicy halibut for hand rolls. just add avocado, green onion, nori and rice! dip in shoyu with wasabi and you will be kicking yourself for not having been doing this the whole time. EXAMPLE: when you order spicy tuna, those WERE NOT prime cuts that got chopped up 80% of the time. its bone scrapings.
Hey thanks Erik for the positivity and taking the time to check out my video. I greatly appreciate the advice man, that’s some good info right there!! I’m definitely a noob when it comes to preparing my catch so I’ll definitely keep your insights in mind!!! Thanks again 👍
Thanks so much, appreciate your presence and positivity!! I think I saw u on the live chat the other day so I definitely appreciate you checking things out! Please let me know if there’s any way I can be of service. 👍
Hey, thanks for checking out the channel man! For halibut, its good to have 2 setups, one with the LC and another with drop shot. Find structure/dropoffs/rocks and cover as much water as possible. Long Beach holds halibut, its just a matter of fishing when they are in close. It is a grind but good days are possible. Huntington Beach, Sunset Beach, Bolsa Chica, and Seal Beach all hold halibut, but again, its a matter of them being close enough to target. Hope that helps!
I rarely target perch in SoCal, especially this year but I do believe they’re around in S.D., just not dialed into where they’re holding. Thank you so much for the sub and checking out the channel!
Hahaha yea man but at least 2 of em were lost on massive bites, I guess that’s all I can really ask. It’s all good, they were sitting in a box for almost a year so I’m lucky to be able to use em!
I can’t remember why I didn’t but I’m guessing it was cuz it didn’t seem worth the work as this one was only a little over 22”. Next time! Thanks for the comment mike!!
When I’m fishing heavy structure, yes. If it’s open water, I believe 10-12 is fine. To be honest, not the smartest thing for me to do. I’m currently throwing lc’s on 30 lb braid.
Thank you very much. I fish mostly Orange County. Crystal cove might be a good place if ur gonna take the kids. Variety of species to catch depending on the season and it’s a great beach for the kids to play if they get bored. Otherwise Bolsa Chica or Huntington Beach can be good options too. Let me know if u have any other questions, hopefully that can be a decent starting point for ya!

Awesome Benjie! I've come to realize surf fishing is all about persistence and patience.
Thank you! Yes, persistence and patience for sure. Definitely applies to me. But it’s also helpful to have a plan as well as being able to adjust based on what we see. With that, the odds can turn in our favor.

Thanks for the video. I loved that your family was involved!. What size hook did you use and is 20lb line ok to catch halibut?

Benjie Kim Fishing let’s do it brother, you are welcome
Nice video Ben and fam! Great seeing another Korean American family enjoying fishing! Try swimbaits. LC is a bit pricey to lose them in the waters.
Thank you brotha! Gotta love the Korean connection 🤙🤙!! I love using both. Perhaps I’m foolish but I love throwing the lc and tho I’ve lost my share, the moment I stopped worrying about losing one was the moment I started catching with em. Tight lines and blessings to you.

those kids are eatin well! Good lookin family man, and solid hali!
Hey thanks bro, I appreciate it man!! Looking forward to seeing more awesome content from you!!
Hey Benjie glad you were able to grind it out and get one. What retrieve do you usually use?
Depends on the water column but typically a slow roll with occasional rod twitch.
Great video man ! Can’t wait to catch and cook my first halibut. Beautiful kids 👍🏼 wished my son would eat fish like this
Thank you so much Mario! Hali fishing is definitely a grind but if you're out there enough, you'll be cooking that thing up in no time! Tight lines!
Love your vids man. Where’s the best place to go shore fishing for beginner to catch something. Huntington, Newport shores? Etc. thanks
Thank you for the kind words and watching! Huntington is a good place to start, I would work north of the pier all the way towards the BC inlet. This is way better than eating at McDonald's!
haha truth!
look like Petrale Sole. not Halibut
Have you ever wanted to try barred surf perch? It would be interesting to see a catch and cook. I've tried to eat a few but they seem to be very bony

Great video....nice hali! Will fish together one day!
Yes we will!!
Do you need to gut the halibut before filleting or are the guts mainly contained up closer to the head?
Hi John, correct the guts are contained up closer to the head. So you can get straight to filleting!
What beach is this?
Cool video 👍
Thank you for stopping by, appreciate the positive vibes!

Somewhere in between San Diego and Orange County 😉!
i just bought my first lucky craft so i can start trying to fish for halibut! any tips?? or spots in the oc?

Dude you're making me nervous with your knife skills. Lol
I apologize, I suck!! 🤣😩
Benji do you know the fin cartilage meat is prized in sushi?! It’s called Engawa!
I didn't at the making of this video, but I do now! Next one I get a chance to filet, I'll definitely keep it in mind. Thanks!
Dudes he missed the cheek meat. Tge best part.
I just found your videos a few days ago and the wife says I need to go get some halibuts
What beach is this at ?
I don’t specify locations but I fish all over SoCal San Diego to Los Angeles.
Ur kids are so cute
Hey bro do you have break offs using 10LB line with you LC 110?
When I’m fishing heavy structure, yes. If it’s open water, I believe 10-12 is fine. To be honest, not the smartest thing for me to do. I’m currently throwing lc’s on 30 lb braid.
Great video ! Beautiful family wife is gorgeous ✊🏾 where did you fish at i want to take my sons I live in Corona
