- This video demonstrates how to calculate sensitivity and specificity using SPSS and Microsoft Excel. The concepts of true positive, false positive, true negative, and false negative are reviewed.
This video was one of the easier ones for me to follow along with. You do a great job at describing and defining things. You made clear understandings for the concepts you discussed. I also like how you used the example of tests on a person who having a major depressive disorder.
Utilizing sensitive tests and specific tests to evaluate tests and to determine disorders. Outcome measures with a gold standard. Using an instrument that reliable and valid to determine disorders. I appreciated this knowledge, information, and explanation. I think it's important as the video suggested, that since these constructs are abstract it can be difficult to determine them. Having these tests can promote accuracy and can be helpful in treating clients effectively by proper diagnosing.
I really appreciate seeing the visual of these. I know I will reference back whenever needed.
I found this video very helpful in explaining the significance for sensitivity and specificity. I also was appreciative of the association between these terms with diagnosis, whether or not there really is a disorder.
This was good stuff and very informative. It kind of ties together some of the things Dr. Grande has mentioned before, like the false positive and false negatives.
This video was very helpful in defining and distinguishing between sensitivity and specificity. I understand why this would be very valuable in assessing and diagnosing and appreciate seeing both SPSS and Excel.
You gave a clear explanation of both, sensitivity and specificity. This was a good video. I was really able to follow!
I found this video to be very clear and easy to follow, making it clear how to differentiate between sensitivity and specificity.
I understand true/false positive and true/false negative much more now. Although Excel is slower to calculate, the step-by-step really helps with the explanation.
This video was helpful in understanding how calculating sensitivity and specificity relates to possible indications of client disorders. It is important for counselors to make sure that they are diagnosing clients accurately.
I like how Dr. Grande explained not only how to interpret the data, but why would we use it. It was also very interesting how to do this in both SPSS and Excel
This is a good step by step explanation, and it is very nice that you used such a specific that pertains to counseling.
Wow! It is cool to learn this in the context of real life disorders. Because of the use of testing if a disorder is present, it was clear to see the importance of specificity and sensitivity.
Very easy to follow and description of terms. The equations to find are nice and big on the side and following the outcome chart to plug in those values is simplistic. Sigh of relief I understood this calculating!
This was a new concept for me. The calculations seem simple and helpful when analyzing data.
This video provided a good explanation of false positives and false negatives. It can get a bit confusing for me, though. I was not aware of sensitivity and specificity before viewing this video so I did find it very informative.
I like how this video clarifies sensitivity and specificity test, I did not know that sensitivity shows positive results for disorder whereas specificity shows negative results for no disorder
This video was a nice breakdown of showing a concept in both Excel and SPSS. I liked the explanation of false positive and false negative because I have heard that previously and not understood it.
+Rachel Foster I agree. I did not have an understanding of false positive and negative so this was a great overview.
Very informational video and easy to understand. I was not familiar with calculating sensitivity and specificity in either SPSS or Excel before watching this video. The calculations seem simple to implement.
+Candace Fernandez I was also unfamiliar with the concept of sensitivity and specificity before watching this video. I agree that there was a lot of information provided but it was easy to follow.
Very informative video, it was a great explainer for false positives and negatives.
This is a very informative video and Dr. Grande explanation was easy to understand. I think that specificity would be more important in diagnosis.
I was unfamiliar with the concept of sensitivity and specificity and how to calculate them. This video provided a great explanation of both and was easy to follow.
Good video...great explanation of sensitivity rules. It was interesting to see how this works with diagnosing conditions. I appreciate the detail on false positive and false negative.
This was very interesting to learn and a good video.
I found this video interesting and easy to apply when diagnosing. Sensitivity calculates how often a test will be positive, or a client would have a disorder and specificity calculates how often a test will be negative, or a client would not have a disorder. Sensitivity rules out disorders and specificity rules in a disorder.
+Michelle Robinson I really like how Dr. Grande specifically pointed out why and how this would be used in the real world
+Michelle Robinson, I found this description of sensitivity and specificity to be really helpful.
+Michelle Robinson Your summaries are always very good, Michelle!
I think I would understand this a lot better if I was doing it first hand but the video was very straight forward and helpful
Sensitivity is if a person has a disorder how often will the test be positive? On the other hand specificity shows the probability if one tests negative for a disorder. This data is indicated using SPSS and Excel. Great video!
Great video! This concept is not new to me, but I had not known much information on it. This video was great in the explanation!
I liked how the statistical concepts were explained and compared to mental health disorders of clients.
Good video. Very interesting and informative.
such a good , yet simple, explanation.
Good video. Very informative👍
These concepts are new to me but this video is helpful in understanding sensitivity, which determines how often a test will be positive (indicating a disorder), and specificity, which determines how often a test will be negative (indicating no disorder). It was also clear in explaining that highly sensitive tests are good for ruling out disorders and highly specific tests are good for ruling in disorders. Overall, video was helpful in learning to calculate each of these concepts.
+Jacklin Skibicki I agree, Jackie. I understand the importance of these types of tests and the video did a great job showing how to work with the data in both SPSS and Excel.
+Jacklin Skibicki I remember these concepts from research. But this video went a bit further explaining their significance and why we would use them.
Sensitivity and specificity are both new learning for me, it was nice to be able to connect this to something we will be testing such as if a person is positive or negative for a disorder. These functions both seem fairly simple to calculate. What might you do with those numbers afterward?
These concepts are new to me. I think Dr. Grande did a great job explaining the concepts. The calulations themselves seem pretty straightforward.
+Mandy Moore I agree with you, this concept is new to me too. I think the concept is easy to understand. I also understand the need for this test. You don't want to have a false negative, or a false positive.
+Mandy Moore Agreed, Dr Grande explained these terms very well and was easy to follow and apply.
+Mandy Moore I also found this video to me of new information as we did not cover this in our research class, however I think it was straight to the point and the calculations seem simple enough to conduct.
+Mandy Moore Agreed. New concepts, but this video did a great job explaining each.
Thank u! Awesome presentation
You're welcome, thanks for watching -
The concept of sensitivity and specificity in relation to the likelihood of obtaining a false positive, true positive, false negative, and true negative was foreign to me until viewing this video. This would be very helpful when determining the effectiveness of an assessment or test. Overall, very helpful.
This was all new information to me as well and also realized how it would be helpful in understanding whether or not an assessment is effective
it is helpful to see how to recognize the true/false positives and true/false negatives.
Great video! I thought it was interesting that highly sensitive test rules out disorders and highly specificity tests rule in disorders. True negative results and True positive results are confusing to me
found it very useful . thank you sir
You're welcome - thanks for watching -
Sensitivity tells us how often the test will indicate that a person has a disorder if they do. Whereas, specificity is like the opposite; how often will a test indicate a person does not have the disorder if they do not? This is clearly useful to appraisal techniques. This would help in development of a test it seems.
I had the same thought about how useful this would be in developing a new test.
+Alicia Zahn I think this would be very useful in tests that are being developed and new tests being used in the field. Clearly, no one would be comfortable using a test that is known for giving numerous false positives and false negatives. I wonder if all tests cause some false positives and negatives at some point?
So what this is good for is comparing the tests that has already been done and its outcome and the test that has just been done to check accuracy.
In counseling there is no specific test to guarantee the results of specific diagnostic tests. So there seems to be a gray area if I am understanding this video correctly and being able to calculate the sensitivity and specificity is a way to try to be as accurate as possible with diagnostic tests for mental disorders.
+Melissa Clendaniel This is a good reason to always keep in mind that one test is not enough and clinical judgement is a large part of treatment.
Thanks
Not good
Did you know how to use excel even without spss... because actually, spss gave my laptop a virus. Can you guys help me? Monday will be our defense.
