Four Songs, Op. 13: III. Sure on this Shining Night
Text by James Agee
Sure on this Shining Night
Sure on this shining night
Of star made shadows round,
Kindness must watch for me
This side the ground.
The late year lies down the north.
All is healed, all is health.
High summer holds the earth.
Hearts all whole.
Sure on this shining night I weep for wonder wand'ring far
alone
Of shadows on the stars.

This is type of artistry is what will continue to keep Classical music alive and thriving in today’s time
Treyson Sherratt thanks so much for the appreciation. Really means a lot to me!
Thank you so much for this really kind comment. I'm so privileged to have this as my life's work.
Sometimes I hear a singer perform a piece of music and think: “this must have been what the composer heard when he or she wrote it.” Lisette Oropesa has captured the essence and profundity so wonderfully with her rich, multi-colored voice. I can’t stop listening.
❤yes.
Lisette, thank you for your exquisitely beautiful rendition. I am in Minnesota where the winters are long, cold and dark. Yet, the beauty of a summer night in the northern forests, gazing at the stars and their reflection in the lakes is unsurpassed. Your interpretation of this song expresses the emotions perfectly.
Lisette is amazing! And what can be said of the pianist accompanying her? He was great also. Look with what sentiment he strikes those last chords
Soooo incredibly elegant!
So true to the piece, the text, the dynamics. Beautifully shaped phrases!!!
Its 12:50am in Philadelphia right now - and this is sending me off to bed so wonderfully calm, and gently
Thank you Mdme Oropesa for this gift.
🥰🥰🥰
....and, the dress is amazing
😎😎😎
My old school in Philly is doing this song for their choir😂
This was the first art song I ever heard live, sung by Patricia Petibon at the Wigmore Hall. Thanks for bringing back the memory; you sing it so beautifully, Lisette
Thank you! It's one of my all time favorite songs!
Sure on this shining night of star-made shadows round
Kindness must watch for me this side the ground
The late year lies down the north
All is healed, all is health
High summer holds the earth, hearts all whole
Sure on this shining night
I weep for wonder wand'ring far alone
Of shadows on the stars
What a uniquely gorgeous song. Wow. I'd love to hear a modern non-operatic take. Though this woman's performance is absolutely lovely
this is lovely, no fluff, just art. You should record Nocturne as well, a favorite from Barber. ..and Un Cygne of course . .. and.. Nuvoletta.. ( oh, you did,, haha)
okay that last phrase though!! how does she not breathe!!?? incredible
Wow. 15 seconds, in lower register, during performance. I didn't even notice until I read your comment. "Don't let them see you sweat."
Absolutely beautiful! (Not on easy song to sing) . I enjoy how the pianist is so engaged as well.
I love this song and sang it long ago. I love your version.
This is very wonderful. And she is very perfect in the delivery. And I did sing this with the Cantare Chorale (the four-part version) so I can tell "good stuff" when I hear it. ("Good stuff" is a technical term only we singers use among ourselves.) Anyway this is really "good stuff."
Who could ever dislike this.... Heavenly. Brava!
I’ve watched this like five times today. I always sigh at the end. In a really good way. Very beautiful rendition and inspirational for me as I start to learn this piece.
This is a very special recording. Thank you. You are so very soulful. I have immense respect for your artistry. The light in you shines very brightly
Anything we can do to share the love we have of music makes our art worthwhile. Thank you so much for the appreciation!!
Stunning singing, flawless technique!
Lisette, I have become such a fan of yours over the past year. Your interpretation of the Obradors "Canciones..." inspired me in rehearsing the pieces for my lecture recital, and I am now having my students watch many your videos as well. Yes, your voice is brilliant, but there is something so equally admirable about your comfortable yet commanding presence on the stage. Thank you so much for your contributions. If you have not yet sung in beautiful Maine, we would love to have you here!
David Myers You are too kind, thank you so much! Maine is one of my favorite states! I have been there twice just for vacation. But I’d be delighted to sing there sometime!
Singing this today at a house concert 😊 🎶
Beautiful singing, and beautiful, sensitive playing from Vlad!! XOXO
Just so beautiful. Thank you.
Honest, direct, passionate, stunning. Wonderful, Lisette.
You are amazing Lisette, so beautiful voice and phrasing.
Thank you so much for the kind words!
Thanks so much that is really kind of you to say.
This was beautifully performed with a luscious voice.
Finally, someone who does not sing this song like a race horse. it is actually even more intimate than she does it, but till now, she has the best interpretation on the net, or anywhere else I've heard. Beautiful singing. So well done.
magnificent moving rendition of a masterpiece. Shout out to the accompanist who matched the emotion perfectly.
The pianist, Vlad, was beautiful! I agree: equal!
You have the voice of an Angel... One of my life's goals is to see you in person~ I'm not sure if that will happen but it would be amazing!!♥️💕💕👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Sublime, Barber!
Wow you are absolutely AMAZING! Great performance and voice. Thank you!
This is a marvelous performance. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Oh my Lord! What a breathtaking performance.
This was truly magical. Thank you for such beautiful artistry. Please record Knoxville 1915.

This is easily the most gorgeous rendition of this poignant song. Thanks for this gift, I must have listened to this on Apple Music some 50 times in the past week and am now doing it with my teacher
This song is you.
Listen to her : Sempre Libera" (La Traviata)(UA-cam, provider Bocca Baciata) for the contrast, Lisette can do it all!
Bravissima!!!
Simply divine!!!
I have to sing this for NYCOS
My voice teacher gave this song for me to sing
❤
Sniff*💜
Yes, very beautiful, but Roberta Alexander's version is so magical I think it will never be topped. Check it out, you will be swooning in delight!
Glad you have your favorite interpretations. That's what's amazing about this music, everyone has a special take and some speak more deeply to a person than others.
Roberta Alexander’s version enjoys the benefit of the orchestral accompaniment, which envelops her voice and the song with a glowing string sound. At this level of musical artistry comparisons are extremely subjective, if not downright odious. I for one am equally enthralled by both performances. Superlative achievements both!
@@LisetteOropesaSoprano are there any master class videos that you have done? Flawless technique!
