- This was a challenge from a long time viewer who commissioned me to build him a Mark Sandman (from the band Morphine) tribute bass. Apparently Mark played this pawn shop bass that he heavily modified into a two string bass meant to be played by a slide. Contact me if you're interested having me build one for you, price is $1,500 shipped with a hard case. Or if you want to build one yourself, here are the parts I used:
Electronics plate: amzn.to/3xwjxzr
Mini toggle switch (for series/parallel): amzn.to/3jDWOJM
Bridge: amzn.to/3M6vrnD
String retainer bar: amzn.to/3KP4WTw
Glass slide: amzn.to/3EjIYpx
Flatwound bass strings (the only set w/ 55 and 75 gauge): amzn.to/3M7o5Aj
Bone nut: amzn.to/3jGbfNc
Tuners: amzn.to/3jKEm1Y
Zinsser Shellac: amzn.to/3jMTDiI
Tru Oil finish: amzn.to/3JNJugi
Neck: amzn.to/3Em42LR

So I’m actually the soon-to-be owner of this bass and I just wanted to chime in and say how cool of a guy Dan is and how easy he is to work with. I did indeed give him complete creative control on this build. As long as it had the functionality, I was happy. This FAR exceeded my expectations, and they were already really high. It’s very in line with the original bass but still has Dan’s flavor in it. It’s an amazing tribute to Mark Sandman and I cannot wait to have it.
Thanks for the kind words Nick! I very much appreciated the creative freedom to give it my own flavor, and more importantly I appreciate the encouragement and affirmation of choosing me to build it for you. Glad I was able to deliver on it!
@@GunsandGuitars you’ve delivered and then some. Not to mention it sounds GREAT. In series it’s DEFINITELY got that Morphine sound.
Talk about being the luckiest guy on earth! May this gem bring you satisfaction every time you pick it up. Cheers! (Good Work Dan!)
This is a piece of art!!! I'm a huge fan of morphine and this looks like the real thing. So happy for you!
Super cool build. Might want to try flats on it. Have fun. Those Multivox Premier Scroll basses are rare as hens teeth to find in the wild. Great job Dan!
Mark was a nice guy. Cool to see you build this. My high school art teachers son was Dana the sax player. He used to bring their early demos in to class to play all the time, and my buddies sister used to date the drummer, Mark wrote the song “Claire” about her. We used to go watch them play around Boston all the time.
Cool!
Outstanding work.
It's great to see that Mark hasn't been forgotten. Good playing too.
2 & 3 ..demonic? .. D n A?... D. G.?
@@jackl3586 What?
Really impressed with how you sanded the finish away from the edges to give it a 'binding' look. Top shelf!!
Thanks man! It turned out as good as I hoped!
i’d legit be incredibly upset if Dan ever stopped uploading. this video was better than usual and his usual content is normally top quality
Thanks Ian!
Sandman was one of the greatest songwriters and performers the world has ever seen - thanks to you and your friend for reminding me how beautiful he was and how much I miss him… legit
I am a HUGE Morphine fan and I have been following you for years. This build makes me so happy. I feel like you NAILED the tone.
Thanks daviid! I’m very happy with the tone, I think it’s pretty close for not knowing anything about Marks outboard gear
Just for the record I'm a huge marijuana fan no more for me morphine's a little strong hahaha
The faux binding turned out awesome
Such a unique bass
Yeah, when I saw that trick of filing the stain away to get that effect... such a cool trick and (of course in hindsight) makes such perfect sense.
Thanks guys!
Was just gonna comment the same thing!
"He (Mark Sandman) had an amazing feel and was very creative. It’s not like he was a technical wizard: he was all about emotion." by Les Claypool when asked about his favorite bass albums.
Just fantastic! I saw Morphine a good number of times when they came through Seattle in the 90's. My wife was acquainted with Dana (saxist in the band) so we always went to see them. I got a chance to play Mark's bass briefly and it was super simple and somewhat crude, sort of like what I'd imagine EVH's Frankenstein to be, but it was perfect. And man, the sound was undeniable right out of the gate. You could hear their sound a mile away. Watching this build makes me want to make my own with spare parts (I'm no luthier). Brilliant job!
never the day would of expect to see a guy do a bass build tribute to morphine and also shoot off some cool weapons, you sir have a awesome channel!
Buena, Buena
How cool is it to have an amazing custom instrument AND an awesome video of it being made! Great job! Saw Morphine 3 times in the mid 90's and they were some of the most powerful live shows I've ever seen.
That demo sounded as incredible as that bass looks!
Thanks ruby!
Mark Sandman was a two string God. Thanks for the dedication to him.
Wild man just wild
7:36 Alright let's see if we can get a tune out of this Bass (it's not really a Trombone)
Great stuff! I've always loved the 2 strings. That color on body is dynamite.
Thanks Chris!
He also had a 3 string version and even a 4 string version too
I mean, I’ve never used the other two strings! This would be perfect!
No chord shapes AWESOME
Guns and Guitars You can always convert it into a 4 String Bass (since you have all 4 Tuners on the Headstock), you just need to make a new nut, add 2 more saddles to the bridge, & new pickups. So w/ the D & G Strings added (tuned C, G) you can add a High C, & a High F tuned down a half step so now you'll have C, G, C, E
I didn't discover Morphine until a LONG time after Sandman died. It really sucks he went out the way he did.
My cousin turned me onto them. I was bummed about Layne Staley’s death and he was telling me how he went through the same thing with Mark Sandman and recommended I check Morphine out. Been a huge fan ever since.
I absolutely adore Morphine (the band).
Have you seen the films about Mark Sandman; Cure for Pain and Journey of Dreams?
Cure for Pain was on UA-cam. Journey of Dreams is on Amazon Prime.
Cure for Pain is so amazing and tragic. I legit wept watching it.
Cool!. I've been pondering a two-string bass build with this exact pickup and wiring combo. Nice to hear the series/parallel switch in action!
Great video, it'll help me a lot cause I'm doing the same but in France. MR. Sandman was one of the best groovy songwriters ever and a really kind man. So as Dana, Billy and Jerome. I had the unic chance of meeting them in Paris Elysée Montmartre april 2nd 1994, one of the greatest moments of my life. Thx U Morphine & RIP Mark
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👌🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 Hello from Northern Ireland. 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻
That’s awesome. Morphine is a favorite of mine. Good work!
Do u build custom order guitars? Or is this a one off? Jc. Great job. Love the channel name. Add god and family and u got this mans life in a nutshell😊 Interesting how u took a woodworkers approach more then a luthier approach. Incredible skills
always amazing job👍👍👍 Happy Easter's time and much enjoy with you👌👍
WOW!!! Fantastic! Do you happen to sell a pattern for this or any one know where I could get one to make a Sandman replica? Love Morphine and have always wanted to make a 2-string slide.
Thanks very much!
The bass was a 1950s Premier. You got close. But the original is far sexier. I am getting closer to death - so I want to say the current generations slight the past, barely acknowledge there was amazing talent. and then make vastly inferior everything despite having better tools and sometimes better materials. You all need to take your clothes off and look in the mirror and say "I am, after all, mortal, not the source, I am flesh and blood and am flawed."
Every guitar / bass you build is more then a masterpiece. It’s a piece of art. This one looks amazing, I’m planning on building a body from scratch, sg/tele hybrid. And really want to try that exposed wood binding. Keep up the work, can’t wait to see what else you have planned.
you built a super cigar box bass! That's cool. Hey make your own Tru Oil. equal parts Polyurethane and boiled linseed oil.
Tru oil is one of my favorite finishes. Just completed a P-bass using it and it feels so good in the hands. Fantastic job on that instrument.
I read it was actually the A string which was tuned up to D .... your thoughts? Also was the 202 slide thick enough?
Man now if you can make me a Star Wars heavy blaster rifle stock for my Yugo RPK that’d be great.
Hi Dan, now you are officially my go-to-bass-luthier on youtube!!
Hi. Whats the brand of your pickups and the bass strings? Thanks
Hello !... What was the stringging and tuning of Mark Sandman bass ?
Now you've got to do a video on playing like Mark Sandman! Do you feel like swimming?
Are both strings tuned the same?
I tuned them CG
beautifully crafted bass and music from Morphine.
2:30 Oooh, looks like somebody got a laser cutter!
Wow you have a good eye to catch that. Stay tuned, I’ll be showing off the laser soon.
What kind of strings do you use so the rasping of moving the slider doesn’t kill rats
That turned out great. You are a true craftsman Dan.
Thanks paul!
Very concerned that I was subbed to you and haven’t heard anything for months. Just found out I have been unsubbed.
Man I want a audio interface so bad. The guitar sounds so much cleaner :/ and dont have to worry about feedback
Great video! I’d be down to see them without background music
Ladies and gentlemen, this is Guns and Guitars. At your service.
Instruments of this type in the east are called rubab sounds like rubab in Tashkent often played on such instruments is a national Uzbek instrument .the sound in general is super at your instrument
Dude you really have to start building your own necks. Its easy
I think that's the coolest thing I've seen all month. Loved Morphine
What a gorgeous and accurate reproduction, this instrument looks absolutely stunning!!! I am tempted to say that I kind of want one of these myself now!
Very cool, very interesting. It sounds great and looks very nice.
My man!
you think it would sound good to do this with a 4 string? like have the neck pick up under the E and A strings and the bridge one under the D and G?
"Ever since I met the devil I ain't been the same, oh no!" Morphine - Buena
Turned out rad man. Interesting concept.
Wow I fast forwarded though half the video because I thought it was the intro
Good to see it turned out pretty Buena.
Very cool as always!
Would you consider building another?
As a morphine fan, I started getting out when he started playing it
And suddenly my brain's back in the '90s.
Just got to the bit where you plug it in. You are a genius, I mean really holy cow!
Morphine i want one for me ❤😢😢😢you made my day today hope you have one of the finest too brother❤
Would you do another? Exactly the same.
... What were the stringing and tuning of his bass please ?
Hey Dan i saw you are doing a lot off bass builts maybe you could do guitar build of a famous guitarist?
Dang dan you're getting good at making instruments. Really want to see you get a free scrap piano off craigslist and make a bass or two out of it
I can’t wait for that too! That would be a cool project
What’s up with your soldering iron?
Yeah the bamboo skewers! Great mod to eliminate the need for a solder stand. Brilliant
Exactly, makes it easier to find a safe place to set it down. It also helps if I need to choke my fingers up closer to the tip for better control
Guns and Guitars You know what Mark Sandman also had a 3 stringed version, & you can actually add a 3rd String to this instrument if you wish.
Cool! Good to know!
@@GunsandGuitars Yes & he even had a 4 String version too so adding 2 more Strings to this Bass is no issue, all we need is some new pickups & we need to screw on 2 more saddles to the bridge, & also cut 2 more notches in the nut. Luckilly EMG makes some Amazing Pickups that'll give the Bass more Oomph
@@GunsandGuitars Adding 2 more strings is easy as you have 2 more tuners you can use, and you just need to add 2 more saddles to the bridge and some new pickups
@@GunsandGuitars converting this into a 3 string (and eventually 4 string) Slide Bas with 2 higher strings (an Octave above the 2 current ones) will have to wait and that'll be in a future video
Can you play "Too Much Time On My Hands?"
I’d do 4 strings on that design any day, including with the slide.
Damn dude, that's so sick!
Which strings did you use for the bass?
I wanna see a leland sklar double reversed p bass tribute, frankenbass
I just found this channel and it has the most kek badass name ever
Morphine is one of my favorite bands!
Wow!! That's great, dude!!!
You gotta do Cliff Burton’s Rickenbacker, dude! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🎸
That would be fun!
Not a fan of the bass shape, but the built is master class!
That's really cool!!
Fuckin Awesome!
That sounds and looks great
Can you build me this bass?
Try to make a yamaha flying banana guitar
You do have some news tools. Cool Dan!
Awesome and sound great . -
Well crafted and well played!
I got to play marks bass once 😊
Nice great band rip mark
I didnt know i need two string bass, until now
I keep looking in the guys page, But I can’t find the first song, ends at 2:15. Anybody know the name
My music was made exclusively for me, it’s not available to the public!
Good lord that is awesome!
Eye candy / ear candy 😍
Awesome Job. The Sandman Model done right !!! Sounded immediately like him . Thanks for building that for NostrilDaumus !!!!!!! Cheers.......
looks better than the original!
supra stellar
So freakin cool !!!
great job
