Yeah the original mirage comics had them all as red eared sliders (hence them all having red head bands). It sorta makes Leonardo the "perfect turtle" in a way. ROTMNT makes it clear that he's sort of a prodigy, but doesn't take things seriously enough. Which is kinda why Splinter made him the leader at the end, to help him grow.
The turtles also have a little sister of a different species too named Caterina or Cat for short. Which makes her Splinter’s only adopted daughter (Cat is an OC I created two years ago and her origin started back in 2012 with that other show of the ninja turtles, which are my favorite versions)
@Elaine Carlos SPOILER ALERT FOR ANYONE WHO DOESNT WANT IT RUINED FOR THEM! Okay? Okay. Rocksteady and bebop cave in his shell and he dies. Theres a whole panel with everyone together while I believe, Raph is holding him while crying. His soul later gets put into his robot. But even though hes still "technically" alive, it doesnt help with how much it broke donnie fan hearts.
to specify, raph is actually an alligator snapping turtle. not a common snapping turtle. you can tell by the ridges on his shell. as those ridges are only found on alligator snapping turtles, while the common snapping turtle has a smooth shell, and can tuck its head all the way into it's shell. an alligator snapper can't but they are able to fully rotate their necks to the back of their shell, while a common snapper can't.
They all have specific species, and it's a bit weird that they didn't go into that since it makes their design choices more interesting. Donnie is a spiny softshell, given the spots on his shell and the small ridges that can be seen near the top in The Purple Jacket. Though a little less obvious, Mikey is an ornate box turtle which fits with his artist persona.
@@madderandmadder i keep forgetting that soft shells are the actual name of donnie's species. Since in minnesota we refer to them as leather back snappers.
I just noticed but I think Mikey is the only one to disappear into his shell. And Donnie wears his mech shell to protect his soft shell. This show was amazing with design choices

(I haven't watched this series yet cause I been busy but the more I find out about the more I want to watch it)

Season 2 episode 2 (Todd Scouts) - Leo considered that he could eat Donnie for food out in the wilderness before being told “Your terrible” by Todd. 🤣 that was so funny but omg. The fact that red-eared sliders actually having cannibalistic tendencies concerns me about Leo now.
So Mikey is gonna live longer than the other turtles Red eared sliders live for 30 years Snapping turtles live for 47 years And soft shells live for 50 years While box turtles live up to 100 years
And rats only live for two-three years. The fact that splinters probably around forty-to-fifty but look like sixty-plus. I mean it's inevitable, but...
I think the human DNA may have given them human lifespans because if they had the same turtle lifespans, Leo would be middle aged which he definitely is not. Raph and Donnie would also be adults if they had the old lifespans. Although I do wish we got an episode about this topic and Donnie trying to assure everyone that they won’t die young.

I’m working on a TMNT fan comic where the turtles flashback to when they were kids. I’m still working on the name but I’m think either tales from the sewer or TMNT: flashback
All the turtles will massively exceed splinters life span as the life span of a rat is usually about 6-7 years, but despite the odds some could live longer, most rabbits only live between 7-8 years and my eldest rabbit is celebrating his 10th birthday in a few months
if I'm not mistaken, in the original Merage conics, it was said that when they were mutated, they for some reason lost their red markings, so they all wore red bandanas to honour their species
@Sylvonte Wright there is another reason, I forget what the technique is called, but essentially, not only are they wearing the same coloured bandannas, they have the same skin colour and body shape, minus their weapons, they all look the same so the enemy won't know who is who, it also helps that Merage Splinter taut them how to use each other's weapons, so if for what ever reason they switch weapons, if in the heat of battle or something they're doing for the day, this will confuse the enemy even more
I may not like these versions of the ninja turtles, but my OC, their quirky fashionista of a little sister Caterina/Cat who also dances like a pro and sings like an angel, is a painted turtle. Painted turtles are the most common turtles in North America especially Illinois, they're it's state reptile (CAT: Take that, bros! 😏). Painted turtles, like softshell turtles, spend their time in water, in order to eat, they have to be in the water in order to swallow their food properly (I wonder if that's how Cat in the show eats her healthy foods???). Painted turtle shells are made up of 60 bones, and as hatchlings, like Cat was, their incubation temperature can tell if they are a boy or a girl, but since Cat is obviously a girl, her incubation temperature is higher than her brothers' (I guess that's why she never complains about snowy weather because she's cold-blooded with a high incubation temperature!)
Sylvonte Wright yeah i agree. like how raph is the oldest and the leader. but secretly we know the better leader is LEO. he’s always pepping up the team and coming up with good plans, he’s just unmotivated most of the time. also when they were deciding if Mikey should go on a solo mission, it was Leo and Raph arguing about it like two authority figures would. and finally, Donnie and Mikey work really well together as the two youngest siblings.
I see. So the turtles in the series are actualy different species of Turtles.Didn't knew. Not unlike the turtle series from the past who are the same species, right?
