I started reselling vintage clothing, accessories and home decor online. Finding items to sell at estate sales, yard sales and thrift stores is like a treasure hunt and the extra income supplements my retirement funds. I set my own schedule and make my own decisions. I love learning about brands, fabrics, designers, etc...and sharing that knowledge with my customers. It's the perfect side gig for anyone who likes to shop and wants a flexible schedule.

I am an insurance broker and I have talked to so many of my clients who have decided that going back to work in some capacity fulfills their need for money and meaning. I also have clients who are facing pressure from their employers to go ahead and retire even though they don't really want to. Corporate pressure on older workers creates a very toxic work environment and so they move toward retirement with a resolve to find something else to do as soon as possible. I think it's really sad, and so I am working to create a channel that helps people caught in those situations to move into a satisfying role of their own choosing. I like this channel!

I agree and am one of those. However finding something new a different is what I'm doing. I don't need a new big career, just something to feel like I'm contributing and more time to relax. I'm not going just sit around . I watched my parents do that. It was scarey watching them decay before my eyes. Stay active - body soul and spirit.😊

I'm 60 not retired yet. Retiring age 67. Right now I'm just part-time as a caregiver. I also run a flea market booth over the weekend. I also know how to repair PC's and Laptops. I even know how to build websites. So love to hustle for a buck. Kinda retire right now, but I'll slow down even slower at the age 67. So relax more, but still hustle for sure.

My mother is a retired paralegal, took a few years off to care for her father, then became a teacher's aide for special needs students. My advice is give a teacher's aide job a try before you make the commitment for getting certified, see if you like it. Pretty much all school districts have a difficult time getting aides, the pay is pretty bad. She had a great special ed teacher that she worked for and they worked well together for 10 years. Also you can pick and choose the jobs and grades. Good luck whatever you choose.

Great information. I got my teaching licensure during Covid after 30 years in pharmaceutical sales. Although working more than I want right now the school year offers a lot of time off. I work for a teaching contract company, so it offers more flexibility than a full-time teaching assignment with a school district.

I could not imagine spending my retirement slacking off for the rest of my life. Most of my career, I have loved the work I've done, but I've always known I would be doing something else -- something more meaningful -- if making money wasn't so important.
So now this is the time I finally get to pursue all the projects I've conjured up over the years that may solve a problem that a lot of people are trying to solve, help others pursue an art I am advanced in, help people enjoy life a little more, or just make their lives easier in some way. But I can pursue them without having to worry about whether they'll be "profitable" or not -- maybe they will, maybe they won't -- but I'm just having the time of my life now just getting to see how all my "little ideas" turn out.

I am 76 and I retired similar to the human being I was when younger. I taught English-Literature to Middle and High School students for 33 years. Upon retirement, I did what most who teach this subject really want to do - I have written novels and short stories. After my first years of retirement at this, so far, I have made about 20 dollars in sales. In the grand tradition of the eccentric writer, I remain the eccentric as I was in my youth. I remember reading someone famous who said what other profession is there that you spend gazillions of hours doing and in the end you don't know if you'll make any money.

Your comments about working in a library environment might need a little more input. I’ve had experience as a public and academic librarian and yelling and irate patrons are unfortunately common occurrences. There can be a great deal of job-related stress both from fellow workers and library patrons. That being said, working in libraries can be very rewarding and is an incredibly important role in our society. However, not to be taken on by the faint of heart or those who idealize the environment. I do not regret a moment spent dedicated to this career but want to keep it real for anyone thinking of this option in retirement. Thank you for all of this content as a great starting point for discussion.
