The Alien War Machine (Tripods), the environment and the ambient sound are the most realistic features I’ve ever seen so far
Why is it called war of the worlds anyway? I vaguely remember watching this movie almost two decade or (?) and only remember the scenes where the people were inside the robots basket and i think some ghost boy at the stairs?
@@VinnyUnion It’s called War of the World because it’s the war between two worlds, Mars (according to HG Wells the writer of the book the aliens are from Mars) and Earth. Aliens want to take over Earth. Also the ghost boy you saw it’s from the movie “Scary Movie 4” a parody of the original movie “War of the World” directed by Steven Spielberg in 2005 and starred by Tom Cruise.
I feel like the lack of music adds to that creepy silent ambient of faint distressing cries and rumbling of machines

Man the sound effects are GODlike, insane atmosphere just by hearing the tripods launch, you know it's going to hurt lol. This game looks promising asf, imagine a game lasting months while trying to survive aliens, enemy players, and the environment, while creating bases like in day-z, looting, scavaging, sacrificing people so that others can live ! So many possibilities, and a new kind of horror-survival-sci-fi gameplay for hardcore survivalists !!

This is the worst part, there is no narrative. stay away from dayz mechanics, boring game
yupp this looks fucking awesome, in the literal sense of the word. Sound design is excellent. If its finished on release it'll be an instant buy from me.
Now the big question. Will hostile human AI be just as deadly as the tripods? Meaning one tap headshots through heavy fog and shrubbery like Tarkov.

@@TheDarkestPaladin generally no they aren't, IF you place your shots before they do. I've been playing since 2017 though, hearing the words "Cheeki Breeki" give me Nam flashbacks to the days of being sniped across the map by Scav AI with a PM and that was when the PM basically just bypassed armor and helmets. They CAN also track you through walls and back then would be able to see through bushes. Anymore, If I see a scav and a fully kitted player with a Mk18 Mjolnir, and THOR armor I'm shooting the SCAV because the SCAV is generally a bigger threat.

It will, probably not like DayZ, but it will have a multiplayer.
If I'm not mistaken the dev said that players will play as both tripods and humans in multiplayer

The potential with this is insane, as some else mentioned if this was made multiplayer with say 60-100 human player slots on a large map and with about 10 slots for human controlled tripods it would be amazing, think Dayz with tripods, will be following closely.

This does sound really cool but I don’t think the game would be able to handle 110 players on one server, since it’s an indie game. There will be multiplayer and human controllable tripods, but it will most likely be a few human tripods and maybe 10-30 humans if we are lucky. Hopefully I’m wrong and we get what you’re describing though XD
they are doing the best they can right now, at least trying to give us a new game unlike most 3A games these days.@@linkibear8644
I dont think asymmetric horror works well, at least not better than whats seen here
only problems I have with player tripods is if it’s humans then people will only play to be a tripod and not actually be a human at all and depending on implementation they will lobby camp until they can instead of playing so we have like so few humans. And then some individuals will play unfairly and form ‘alliances’ with their discord friend human and start targetting specific people while leaving their friend alone and then perhaps use some cheats too.
37:00 I can tell there was some good effort put into the narration voice-work that used quotes from the book.
It REALLY stands out from the rest of the character voice work.
29:55 Still one of my favorite parts in terms of suspense. Its one of Spielberg's trademarks, making a threat even more scary when its not yet seen. Jaws, and the scene in Saving Private Ryan when the not yet seen German Tiger tanks are entering the ruined town. Jurassic park. Etc. -- Here, I like how the approaching tripod becomes audible right as the sound of the thunder decays away. That is brilliant. The fog of war effect on the tripod is scary when you aren't sure where the tripod is, what direction is heading, and which way to run/ where to hide to remain undetected, and whether it can detect heat signatures in spite of the fog cloud -- I would have loved if the movie had such a scene.
Agreed. The way the fog makes the sounds come from everywhere is disorienting and anxiety-inducing. Plus, the lack of visibility means a tripod could pretty much appear out of thin air. Would have been so much better than the boring final 1/3 of the movie, where the characters are just sitting in a basement. 😢

Looks amazing. I have the PC to run it and I've been a life-long fan of H. G. Wells War of the Worlds since I first picked up a copy of the book aged nine in the late eighties. Loved the 50s movie as well, and found the Spielberg version to be - despite flaws - an effective visual representation of the true horror of the notion of such an invasion. It looks like your game has captured this perfectly.
Which is why I'm out. I'm sorry, but I have pretty strong dreams and it took years and years to shake WotW nightmares where I'd be hiding in basements, scurrying out to grab food when possible and always looking over my shoulder at tripods. I'd see the moors of above my Yorkshire home on fire at night as the tripods stalked back and forth. If they saw me, sometimes I'd be able to jump roof-top to roof-top if the dream were permitting, desperately trying to stay ahead of the marching war machines, sailing over valleys in head-long flight. Other times I'd be grabbing at manhole covers and trying to take to the sewers, or the basements, as people screamed around me and ran. It says something to how great the book and concept is that I still liked it despite these thoroughbred nightmares. But this is just too much. Despite the janky bits it captures it all.
If I ever tried to play this game I'd be nightmare-ridden for weeks. I very much admire your effort - it captures the feel perfectly and best of luck, but for my own mental health I'm going to play some Mario Odyssey and not think about the terrifying haunting sirens that split the night-air as the machines thrum relentlessly forward towards me as I scurry for cover.
No offense, but this is the biggest praise I think the developers could get!

I would like to see instead of them killing you, they would try to drag you to their Tripods so you can be harvested. also would like to see them running from you if you kill one of them.
This game already has that, you can even see Tripod's interior right before you die dragged inside for blood extraction ;)

hoping when this comes out, we will be able to customize how we hear sounds in game, and or be able to disable certain sounds that aren't crucial to the gameplay, but love all of this stuff so far! cant wait!

This is so amazing. I've been a fan of the book since I was a child and I've always dreamed of a game like this. I think as long as it's 100% free there should be no reason Paramount or Spielberg would try to stop it.
Some feedback, because I'm psyched af.
Since the Martians are an active threat, could there be human soldiers too? Seeing them fighting martians that charge them would be insane.
Having tripods be capable of being destroyed might be annoying to some but I think it is sensible. It's a video game and I think having them destructible makes gameplay more diverse. Towns and areas could become safer suddenly when the army scores a win.
When the player dies by heatray, it'd be a nice touch if we could see the body turn to dust and whatever clothes they have floating in the wind.
Is there going to be a story at all?
The description says it all takes place over a week. I personally like the idea of the whole invasion playing out, with the Martians eventually succumbing to bacteria, and the player and everyone else just being none the wiser.
Might be cool to have the player able to hear radio/news in houses/cars talking about the invasion elsewhere. Could have ambient storytelling where the player hears reports about evacuation centers or safe towns then later reports saying those places have fallen.
No matter what, this game is INSANE. Thank you for making this, Please take all the time to perfect it. You're making a lot of WotW fans happy!

It would be awesome if you could set up decoy's to draw the Tripods attention away. Like a car alarm or maybe like a firework, something that could attract attention while the player does whatever.
I truly reccomend redesigning the aliens themselves so you can add a new layer of horror instead of accidental comedy.

Graphics and gameplay look amazing. What I wonder about is the aliens weakness. Is this a game where the tripods' shields are impenetrable for 3-4 days until the aliens get sick and die? Or a more balanced mechanic (besides running and hiding)?
Imagine, big map, 90 human players, 10 tripod players, they have a week to kill the humans before the bacteria gets them

Survival elements are very developed in the game, "boring thing to play". I know I might not have the money or people to tell a good story but it would be the best chance of the game. Interpersonal relationships with well-made bots can be good

16:34 Voice acting needs work. I'm no expert, except to say that trying to be 'dramatic' with it, is just as counterproductive as being deadpan, if the goal is for the dialogue to be natural and convincing. If its forced, its going to sound fake or silly. A voice actor needs to really try to put themselves in the shoes of that character, and feel what they feel. Maybe do a mindfulness/imagination exercise where you once felt concern for a loved one's safety, or your own (as long as its not PTSD triggering).
Example. Where I live, we've had a few hurricanes hit (Rita, Ike, and Harvey), If I was trying to do the voice acting, I might do some reflecting on how I felt when a category 5 hurricane was making landfall, and flooding the houses, to try to get myself in that sort of mindset before recording the dialogue. If I was trying to act say distraught over losing a loved one, I'd think about how I felt when I lost someone close to me. The point is, the more you are able to make yourself feel the intended emotion, the more convincing and natural the deliver. Never 'overdo' or 'overact', don't do that soap opera/ theatrical stuff...it won't work with this genre. -- Anyway, again I'm no expert, its just what I would do.

guys this isnt the creator its actually someone else's. Search up War of the Worlds game and go to channels and youve found the original creator, and its still being made so you might be able to be a tester if you have a good pc and enough chances
