Thank you to monsterfan!!! Monsterfan so kindly pointed out that I by accident had left out one section. I have re-inserted such section, which begins at around 27:18. Thank you!! You are the best, monsterfan!!!]
Here is my collection of VOYAGER COMPANY laserdiscs. I have all but 2 titles.
Please see the list of Voyager Laserdisc titles at LASERDISC DATABASE.com: www.lddb.com/s...
Thank you for your presentation. I am also a collector of Laserdiscs, especially documentaries, and I didn't realize until now that some of these discs are part of a larger collection. Greetings from Poland. Zdzisek.
Inspiring collection, I only have a few of these really need to get that Day after trinity disc! Thanks for sharing. Rolling thunder pictures was a Quentin Tarrantino house named after the 70's movie, I do have Switchblade sisters!
Hello Lazerdreamz and thank you very much. And oh yes, the Rolling Thunder releases!!!
Another company related to Criterion was Home Vision Entertainment, which distributed some of the early Criterion LDs. It also released its own discs, like Voyager. Of the Voyager LDs here, I only have Creation of the Universe. It has a similar feel as Carl Sagan's documentary Cosmos.
Hello and thank you so much!! Yes, the Voyager Company titles are also very significant, with some titles, as you pointed out, becoming Criterion physical media releases later. Also, yes, Creation of the Universe!!
These laserdiscs videos have been really informative for me, I didn't know anything about laserdiscs before seeing your videos. I think they never were a big thing in Finland or maybe it just was before my time (I was born in 1997, didn't they stop making these in early 2000s or so?). My father was a collector, but he collected VHS and he had pretty big collection near 1000, he never talked about laserdiscs. Thank you for doing these videos, I've learned a lot from them!
I am glad! Thank you so much for your comment SJSFilms my friend! 😃
It is a fascinating format!
LaserDiscs were very obscure in all of Europe. Even the US had a far more prevalent LaserDisc scene, and even that was quite unknown to most people except hardcore cinema/ audiophiles. Although the BBC did use LaserDiscs for their channel indents in the 90s. The PAL system was used. Unfortunately, PAL discs and players are quite rare and hard to come by.
LaserDiscs flourished in Japan, Hong Kong, and much of southeast Asia. LaserDiscs held up better against higher humidity and temperatures that would normally destroy cassette based formats like VHS and Betamax. Most people rented discs. Outright buying them was less common.
Thanks for the info, Zyrother!
I should add that, as far as I am aware, there are VOYAGER LD PAL versions of the LOUVRE discs, and I think also the ORSAY disc. I have seen LOUVRE PAL discs being offered for sale on eBay, for example.
However, I am not aware of any PAL releases of other VOYAGER titles.
I've recently begun to aquire several of these, and I'm in love with them. Do you have a favorite?
Thank you so much for this and I am so happy to hear this. It is another great and eclectic bunch of titles. I am not sure if I could name a favorite, but to name a few, for example, the Devo disc, and also maybe the Scorsese short works (though this is I think now pretty well represented with the Scorsese Shorts Criterion release from a year or so back), and maybe the Theatre of the Imagination release, as examples.
@@DaisukeBeppu I have the Theatre of Imagination, Comic Book Confidential, and The Day After Trinity. All are wonderful, and they should come back to the collection
Thank you for making this video. It's really interesting to see almost all of the Voyager laserdiscs in one place. I own a few Voyager releases, and I'm waiting for "The Vancouver Disc" and "Theatre of the Imagination" to arrive soon. Just wondering if you've had any problems with laser rot affecting Voyager or Criterion titles?
Thank you so much! So since this video, I have been able to acquire the missing Voyager titles. One day I really need to update this video. And as for your question, while I have been fortunate so far, yes, laser rot is not so uncommon especially among the earlier 3M releases.
@@DaisukeBeppu Thanks for getting back to me. It's great to hear that you've since completed the collection. Speaking of which, I'm very curious about "Masterpieces from the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg", partly because I was lucky enough to visit the city some years ago, and also because that disc seems to be particularly elusive and somewhat mysterious. Its page on the archived Voyager website at the Internet Archive doesn't even display the cover art!
Thanks for your kind words but most of all for another wonderfully informative video. I would love to hear more details of certain titles but I know time is limited. I would love to hear more about the Orson Welles disc Theatre of the Imagination I think it is.
Thank you so much again monsterfan. You are so Awesome!!!!
And yes I am so sorry. I wish I had more time for specifics... maybe I will try to do this for future videos.
If I do, I’ll see about doing the Theatre of the Imagination Disc. It is fantastic.
Did you ever find the two remaining Laserdiscs?
Hello and thank you for your comment. Yes, after this video, I was able to track down what I understand to be the remaining titles. So thank you.
Of course, it is based on my understanding and so it might be that my understanding was wrong and in fact what I think is a complete set is not in fact complete. However, based on what I was able to find online and elsewhere, yes I think I was able to track down all the titles here. Cheers and thank you so much for asking.
Hey Daisuke...…
First.... thank you so much for your upload, I love all your videos. I was waiting for you to post this video specifically to see what releases you had and also to see if you had any of the "voyager" releases that I have not seen before....well if they did exist in the first place. I do have something I would like to share with you (over on facebook)....I have a copy of the "voyager 91 price list".... that has a whole listing of not only the titles that they are responsible for but those that they distributed for other companies that could be purchased from them that was very interesting. I do believe that is why everyone is confused when collecting "voyager".....a lot of the releases were specific to schools, industries, and other non-home viewers. Or if the release was available for home viewing....it was released twice...(IE) T.E.D2 and Louvre compendium. Let's continue this over on Facebook.....I am looking forward to seeing you there.
Again.....thank you for your video!
Thank you so much!!
Now i am not at all knowledgeable about the specifics of the selling strategies of Voyager and if titles were sold specifically to academic institutions only (though I was aware of this possibility in a general sense). So for example, I know that one of the titles that I am seeking (MASTERPIECES OF THE RUSSIAN STATE MUSEUM) is available at a public library here in Tokyo! But perhaps they were never for sale on the private home video market. I don’t know, but your comment has made me so curious to find out!! Thank you 😆👍. I just saw your comments to me on FB and so I will talk to you further there.
This sounds like the beginning of a great discussion and even a research project possibly!
Also, I failed to comment in my video though I should have: I didn’t mention anything about “non Voyager” titles that were distributed by Voyager (at least as indicated in the catalog that I have and the one that you have). However I suppose that I made an exception when I showed the Rolling Thunder titles at the tail end of the video.
Still, this is yet another fascinating aspect of Voyager that you allude to, and that your catalogue refers to as well. I think this is also important to talk about and explore!! 😆👍
So many intriguing titles in here! THE VANCOUVER DISC?! My word... Have none of these ever been ported over to DVD or other sources?
That is a good question, and my answer is simply "I don't know".
Many of these Voyager discs are archive compilations or collections, and as such, it is possible that they have NOT been ported over to DVD. It is possible however that these were also released on CD ROM equivalents, etc. However, this is yet another niche aspect of Voyager/Criterion history, and I myself have only just barely scratched the surface.
FYI, the VANCOUVER disc is one such archival compilation release, in that it is a collection of pictures of photos or other documents etc, that catalog aspects of the history of the city of Vancouver... such pictures can be accessed using the forward or backward buttons on the remote control.
Daisuke Beppu Thanks for the info, my friend!
You are very welcome!
Hello Daisuke-san!
I'd love a clean scan/photo of the cover for archival purpose.
Never seen a copy around but strangely LaserDisc Reviews mentions it as being review in their July 1994 (page 15) edition...
Page 107/220 in dvdlaser.com/LDindex.pdf
Hello and thank you for your comment.
I am sorry but I am not sure exactly what you mean when you say "I'd love a clean scan/photo of the cover for archival purposes" and I am not sure exactly to which title you refer.
In any case, I wish you well in your endeavors. Cheers.
@@DaisukeBeppu Sorry I was mentioning "The Doors of Time" V1077L" :-)
I should get more of these titles but only have Cyberpunk. which is ok but felt more like an ad for william gibson. They should have talked more about Philip K Dick and others.
Thank you so much and that is a good point you bring up about the Cyberpunk release.
Only heard of For All Mankind, which I just discovered is available as Eureka Masters Of Cinema Blu Ray ! Were many of these documentaries and short films ??
Thank you! Yes, many of these are docs and short films, and I also think that some of these were usually sold directly to schools and academic institutions and libraries etc., though I am not sure exactly of those details.
As for the titles themselves, yes they are docs and also interactive discs (like CD ROMS) Of museum catalogs and archives.
Laser disc has been a format I've always liked, even though I missed it by a lot of years. Would be cool to see a top 10 from you of your favorite Voyager titles, if you ever have the time in the future.
Thank you for your comment!
What a great idea!!!! Let me see what I can come up with! Thank you!!!!!
Your videos are always so inspiring and educational for cinephile and collectors. Keep up the awesome work. Was intrigued what you do for work?
Hey! Thank you for your comments! You are the best!! 😃👍
Do you know where I can get (or can you scan and link a PDF) that Voyager booklet to tell me what all these discs are about? LDDB just lists them, but doesn't give any kind of description that I can see. BTW, do you happen to have an extra copy of Persistence of Vision #1: Monitoring the Media I can buy? (If so, list it on LDDB so I can purchase it there please.)
Hello! I am not a seller or a dealer and so at the moment I am not selling any of my items. Sorry about that.
Once in a while one can happen across a Criterion LD catalog on eBay, or sometimes one might be able to find a person on Facebook who is willing to sell a copy. So perhaps it might be worth it to try there if you haven’t already. Anyway good luck with your search. I hope you are able to find what you are looking for.
Do you own any of Voyager's CD-ROM releases?
