Such lovely women! We're so lucky they were our role models! (Incidentally, I'm a type 1 diabetic of 43 years. That is an achievement!) I love Mary and I love Rhoda!
She said there was some of her in Mary Richards too. She said herself that she didn't really like to create a character. most of her roles had part of her in them! I thought she got an oscar for that role. Or was she Just nominated. On the MTM show the other actors got Emmy's before she did and she was so classy and was so happy for them! Valerie Said that about Mary in her book or an interview.
Do you guys “Get” the original casting idea 💡 for the Mary Tyler Moore Show? Joan Darling “Rhoda” was supposed to be Millie from Dick Van Dyke, she looks just like her, and Gavin McLeod was supposed to be Buddy from Dick Van Dyke, and Ed Asner was supposed to be Mel from Dick Van Dyke, and the original tall dark and handsome Ted Baxter and Mary’s love interest, before Ted Knight, was supposed to be Dick Van Dyke’s character.
beth in "ordinary people" is the real MTM. she owned up to it several years after she did the part. she was playing herself, no acting required. redford knew that when he cast her.
I remember Stand By Your Man the short-lived Fox Sitcom and yes, it was a horrible sitcom It's no wonder why Fox can't keep good sitcoms long other than Animated Sitcoms
Mary seemed a bit uptight in this interview. What's up with that? Maybe she was going through a sugar low? Diabetes can cause mood swings. I miss her and rip and all, but I don't like this interview.
Valerie is awesome, authentic, gracious, classy while Mary...just 'something' about her seems very abrasive, unlikable, and bitchy (esp. during that first minute when Val was talking how they 1st met..wow :/) As usual, not at ALL like the character they played on a beloved sitcom. There's endless rumors that the *real MTM is JUST like Beth Jarret from Ordinary People than Mary Richards. Redford had her first in mind for that role! Hmm...
I think Mary was reserved and I don't believe she was ever that close to Valerie as people want to believe. They were not best friends in real life, Mary herself said she was closest to Betty out of all her cast mates.
And in interviews that I have seen where Valerie is talking about Mary, it is obvious that she struggles on what to say. She doesn't want to say anything that could be construed as being even remotely negative about Mary, but to me it seems that they were never close and personal friends in real life the way Mary and Rhoda were. She gives Mary appropriate credit and praise where it is due, but as far as the personal aspect she doesn't have much to say there.
While I seriously want Mary to RIP I still mean what I said :/. Maybe she was just very crabby and moody that day. It's all over her face and energy that she just wasn't feeling being there.
YOu are MEAN! All the stories I've heard of Mary were about how Sweet and Likable she was. How great she was to work with! And how great a friend she was to her friends and gracious she was to her fans! She had alot of hard knocks like her character of Beth but She overcame all that! Of course she was reserved to. there is no denying That. They said themselves that Valerie is more open and loud and Mary more researved! but you are WAY out of line to say that she was the b word! I make it a point to NEVER beleive Rumors anyway. Mary said there was alot of herself in ALL the characters she played. Just different facets for different characters! Mary had parts of her LIFE that helped her play Beth so well. She had just lost a son to suicide at that time and by the way she answered ALL of the notes of condolence by hand! So that doesn't go with the oppinion you seem to have of her!
RIP Valerie Harper...hope you ladies dance among the clouds sharing laughter throughout the heaven's

Mary deserved an Oscar for being so COLD in Ordinary People
Not really, she was just playing herself.

What birth control episode?

I agree, I thought she was a little bit mean to Valerie as well, Valerie seemed nervous around Mary in this Interview?...
Rosy is annoying with her
Cutie Patutie comments re Tom Cruise.

Yes, Mary could be prickly and she definitely was here.

👎the copy is so awful that one cannot distinguish between Mary and Valerie
Copy, as in writing ? I remember Murray Slaughter use to always talk about "the copy". Is that what you're referring to ?
Gettagarip...
