I have a 2010 Tundra with 228k miles, this just started happening to me as well. The weird thing is if I use my key it cranks forever and won't start, but if I use the remote starter, it fires right up. I've replaced all fuel relays so I'm going to try your clean up method .
Have a 2018 with 50k miles on it that started that. I just waited till the fuel tank got down to a quarter of a tank -1 can of seafoam and amazingly after a few days of driving around town it stopped.
Mine is a 2015 Tundra 5.7 L and it does the same thing! My wife 2012 Sequoia also does the same thing too!
OMG. It is so frustrating, isn't it? I am wondering if it was the fact that I had the battery disconnected so long and something was reset. On the other hand, I wondered if it was changing the air filter (not seen in video) that did something. Regardless, whatever I did in this video, the truck has been running great ever since.
@@projectfixit , I thought is was the battery and I went to the dealer 2 days ago and had the battery changed out. It still stuttering. My wife works over night and she just cranked her 2012 Toyota Sequoia and it does the same thing! How frustrating is this?!
I think I might try to clean the ground terminals like you did and see if that will solve the problem. My son is starting college next year and I was considering getting him a new Toyota RAV4 as a graduation present, but now I am really reconsidering my decision about Toyota brand.
Just an update on the stuttering issue with my 2015 Tundra. I changed out the battery and the problem still persists if the starting temperature is less than 50 degree F. And when this happens, I can get the truck started immediately without any stuttering by stepping on the accelerator as I turn on the ignition key. Fuel pump issue???
@@nauticalstar8363 Gosh. I wish I had a magic answer for you. If you haven't replaced the air filter in a while, try this. If you hear whistling when driving the truck which sounds like a turbo, find out where the air leak is in the intake plastics. I kid you not, this issue was driving me crazy. It wasn't until I pulled all the intake plastics off, changed/cleaned my air filter, sanded down all the negative terminals to the frame (battery disconnected!) that the problem went away. I suppose it is possible my battery was disconnected for a long enough period of time to actually reset the computer. Maybe try disconnecting the battery overnight as a last resort. I am not sure if I would jump on the fuel pump, yet. This was a suspicion of mine, too. However, my issue went away and has yet to return. Yay.
It’s the coolest temp sensor pass side by head unplug it c if it starts in the am
Temperature sending unit. Is what is causing the issue. But there is definitely more to it then that. Because ive changed mine and within a few days it started doing it more intermittently.
Man I was really hoping this would have been my mysterious issue. Tried it this morning with no difference. Thanks for the video at least it was another "free" attempt!
Fuel pressure is good. No air leaks.
If yours is flex fuel, some have commented it could be related to the ECM programming and taking it to the dealer for reprogramming might fix it. However, that does not explain how and why mine mysteriously fixed itself. Good luck.
@@projectfixit no sir. Its not illuminating the security light either. Once it starts and you shut it off it will start back up no problem. Its at 317k miles now. But its been doing this since 220
@@projectfixit hello sir did you solve the problem ? i have exactly the same problem i getting me crazy i replace already the fuel injection pressure regulator and it did change nothing. Here in Belgium i can not be good adviced. Thank you in advance
@@soswag75 I wish I knew exactly what fixed my problem. Unfortunately, it remains a mystery. Something tells me I must have triggered a reset on my truck computer. I don't know how. Seeing other discussion forums on the internet makes me think the solution is in the computer software.
@@projectfixit it make me a real amateur in this case I do know what to do. And the forums i didn't see a completed solution,😂
I was hoping that u fix it, I have some issue on my 2012
There are two fuel pumps in the tank. I believe you have one that is worn out. I've been diagnosed with all your symptoms. There is a TSB for Toyota on it. Computer has to be re-flashed also. $1600.00
Look up your belt tensioner. I'm having a similar issue with my truck.
Coolant temp sensor, unplug it. If it starts that's the issue.
Look up Toyota TSB 0166-19. Alcohol Density Estimate is off. This only applies to FFV engines. Dealer needs to reprogram ECM. I have a 2014 5.7 FFV and am having the same issues. Found the TSB online and taking truck to dealer to have repaired.
@@jasonshallcross2052 Took truck to dealer and they verified issues and it meet the TBS. They ordered new fuel pump which took 2 months to get due to back order. Picked up truck last Saturday. New fuel pump and re flashed ECM not sure how much it cost due to mine was under the 80,000 mile warranty. So far so good on the starting and the fuel consumption has returned back to normal.
@@stephenshook I need to do this! Take a look at my video I just posted.
Mine did the same stuff after sitting. It's a 2014. Mine wound up falling into the inevitable fuel pump recall.
Interesting. Now you have me all worried. My vehicle has not acted up, yet. Mine is a 2014, also.
My 2014 is giving me hell with this, checked everything, can't find the problem
I see the title says your issue is fixed but, the starting and dieing out is normal for about any Toyota when you disconnect the battery no need to ever let that bother you. It resets everything in the computer
@@projectfixit Any Toyota from what I have heard and seen can be strange after a battery disconnect even can have an extended crank before starting, start and die out, start and run rough etc etc. Is everything still going okay at this point and time with the truck?
@@elevatorman427 Yes. The last steps I took cleaning the negative connections to the frame, re-positioning the main harness near the rear of the engine, and replacing missing hose bracket hardware I suppose had cumulatively fixed my problem....hard to believe. Throughout this whole process I did find a number of items disconnected including, but not limited to the fuel regulator vacuum line which didn't fix the problem at the time. I have over 103k miles on the truck and no starting issues since.
@@projectfixit Well glad to hear that. I hope it stays that way and I know you hope so too.
@@elevatorman427 Truck is running just fine. I am going to start another video on the air vents, though. Ever since I have owned this truck, air flow out the vents just stinks compared to my Sienna and compared to my Pathfinder. Cabin filter is not the issue. I will get to the bootom of it. LOL
Dealing with this right now with my 2017 FFV. New battery didn’t help. Sooo annoying I need to take it in
Sorry to hear about this. I am eager to know what your dealership has to say about it. Thank you.
@@projectfixit I just posted a video of what is happening. It’s getting more frequent now. Take a look if you have time.
Mine got code p0308 already changed spark plugs and coils still the same with traction control off
Cylinder #8 misfire. Could it be your injector? This is the next thing I would check if your spark plugs and coil pack was eliminated. Injector was the issue on my sienna. Of course on my sienna, it was #6 cylinder.
Did you ever find a solution? I have a 2015 tundra with the same issue. I would appreciate some help if you can.
This was very bizarre. As seen in my video, the last steps I took were removing all air intake plastics, move my main harness a bit further away from the valve cover as it was touching, and cleaned all the negative connections to the frame. Afterward, the symptom has never returned. My truck currently has over 103k on it. Is it possible the issue fixed itself because I had my battery disconnected the whole time it took for me to do the last steps? It is possible. Whatever it was, I am glad it has not returned. On the flip side, I don't have 100% closure.
@@projectfixit hi did it ever happen again? Thinking of doing same to fix mine
@@dicksonadams9871 No. My truck is still running fantastic. I have over 100k on it, now. Please note what helped fix my problem is still unclear to me. I have had one person respond back to me stating what I did has not fixed their problem and they were quite mad at me. One item, I did not make clear in the video, was I changed the air filter and before I did that, the truck made a loud whistling sound when accelerating making it sound like a turbo. After I put all the plastic intake components back on with the new filter in combination with the wire to chassis surface cleaning, the whistling sound was gone. It is possible I had my battery disconnected long enough to reset some sort of parameter in the ECU. Who knows? A person or two have commented this problem is related to ECU programming. Good luck. Keep me posted. Please don't be frustrated at me if my video was not any help. Regardless, all the comments to this video add gems of knowledge for the next guy or gal.
@@projectfixit hey man, thank so much, it worked. I followed your steps in the video. My car has being starting fine for 3 days now. My car was a 2005 Pontiac Vibe
@@dicksonadams9871 Wow. Good deal. Thank you for following up. Take care.
So did cleaning all the grounds work? Mine is doing it 2014. gas, 88k miles. Just does it randomly
This has driven me crazy not knowing 100%, but I can only assume one of two things fixed my problem. (1. cleaning the ground connections 2. the time I had my battery disconnected could have reset the computer.) I guess I will never know what solved, it. However, I have over 111k on my truck today and the symptom has NOT returned. This is crazy stuff.
Taking it to the dealer:( for service. Mine starts fine every morning but after warm up if I turn it off it won't start up again until I disconnect the battery. First it was once every blue moon but now its almost 100% it wont restart.
Its strange because it will run fine to work which is 45 miles. And after 10hr shift it will start up fine. But if shut off to stop at a store it won't turn back on. Also ive only had this issue in winter never during hotter times
I am sure that’s the problem
Did you ever figure out what was causing it? I'm having the same issue
You know, my son asks me occasionally and I scratch my head without an answer. Truly the last thing I did was remove all the intake plastics, clean the negative terminals, and fiddle with the main harness near the rear of intake manifold by repositioning it looking for anything unusual. The issue never returned. I will tell you, months later my truck gave a hard code for knock sensor P032D. I have a video for that and I discovered mice had chewed through my knock sensor wiring. So, I often wonder if the chewed wires may have been tied to this symptom. This is just me pulling at strings
Clean that Filthy Battery !
My 2015 is doing this at 75K miles. I thought it may have been the battery also. Thanks for sharing this!
You're welcome. Hopefully something in here fixes your issue. There are some good comments, too.
I would look up Toyota TSB0166-19. I think this might answer your question. Its a technical service bulletin that deals with this very issue.
