- I have spoken to lot's of clients and potential buyers who ask the same question. Can this yacht be handled by myself or shorthanded? I always answer yes; the reasons are that when you get up to a vessel of 50ft or greater it actually becomes easier believe it or not. The reason for this is you start finding bow thrusters on 50+ yachts along with electric winches and in Jeanneau's case the way we order the yachts 53 + electric Genoa furler's. all of these options and with the new modern hull design make single handling a vessel of this size very easy. Actually I even find it easier to sail this 57 then my own Jeanneau 39i P.V. And that, there, ladies and gentlemen, is how you sell a sailboat. Pros call this "content marketing." You show people how to operate the boat in a friendly, non-stressed, non-salesy way, and you make friends with them as you do it. After a few videos, they know you, they know the boat, and they feel comfortable enough to start the process of buying one. He even gives you his phone number on the video. Bold move, but for something this expensive it probably pays off. Buyers should, of course, understand that there's a lot more to sailing a yacht than what is shown here. But, that's their lookout. Nice job, Ian. I wish you every success.
gotta love the fact they always do these demos in perfect days... try docking a 40' Jeanneau in reverse with a 20 kt side wind and no thrusters...
LMAO. Even with a bow thruster on my XC-38! Pretty perfect slip for docking as well - not like most. No pilings. Right, just back in until the fenders in rear kiss the dock and jump off to tie off your dock lines. I truly am howling laughing!!!!

I was thinking back to when I was a kid, my mother was navigating her Sea ray and "kissed" the dock at 30 knots, part of the dock sank into the lake luckily our boat did not....LOL!
I have been refitting a J57 in St Lucia and I'm learning to single hand her. Great job Ian! I have used that single handed dock technique (thanks to you) and it works great with no bow thruster (it hadn't yet been repaired) but conditions were perfect (12 knots of breeze directly astern). Indeed the boat handles very well going astern and I like the technique of turning completely around and driving her like a bus as you showed in another video.. I would have liked to have seen a tack and a gybe, but my basic idea is to furl the Genoa, deal with the main and then unfurl the Genoa for the new heading. Again, great job!
I admit to being a poor sailor having only limited time on any rigging almost at all to speak of. In less than 10 min. you've bosted my confidence greatly, it's amazing some of the equipment on these large sailboats! Thank you for your video.

Well..it does have a bow thruster as well. Docking would not be nearly as easy without it.
But still..a great job for such a calm day.

Electric Winches and The ease of being able to Sail with One or Two people is the Key for me !
Don't believe the hype, if your electronic furler or winches fail then....your pretty much screwed.

So if you change direction i guess youd have to pull in the jib and then let it out again on the other side of the main sail? Ive always wanted to learn how to sail but i think id end up with spaghetti for rigging and a beached landing craft for a sail boat.

Man you make that look so easy, I did my day skipper out of gosport England in winter, force 5 winds and trying to winch a Victoria into a birth, that experience put me off sailing for quite a while but you have just ignited my interest again.

They should have placed the throttle higher up as to make it easier to reach without bending over.

Oracle has one that would go really well with one sail. be kinda hard to single hand it though.

It's all fun and easy untill electronics stop working and you can't reduce sail and wind picks up

I think the arguement was try single handing this boat in gale force winds.
