- A new EWTN and RealClear Opinion Research poll reveals that only 24% of Catholics attend Mass once a week. Fr. Eric Cadin, Director of University Ministry and Vocations with the Archdiocese of Boston, explains how this startling number provides an opportunity to invite Catholics back to the beauty of the Mass.
Hosted by Montse Alvarado, EWTN News In Depth welcomes guests in a discussion of current events in the Church, politics, and culture, all through the lens of the Catholic faith.
This show is about finding out who we are as people and as Catholics, and how we can confidently live our faith in the world. It is produced by EWTN News: www.ewtnnews.com

Thank you, EWTN, for allowing viewers to comment.
It's so important to be able to speak freely about these topics.
I have 4 children and I can tell you what they would like to see at Mass :authenticity, truth, reverence, holy music 🎼
Exactly right Fr. Eric. It's more inviting and inspiring and welcoming to enter a Church if it's open all day long - wide open that is. And the availability of priests are always around.
Indeed you hit it right Fr. Eric.
In that way we can feel more powerfully God's presence and His loving touch in our hearts. Thank you so much Fr. Eric! God bless you and your Archdiocese.
Yes. I used to love stopping in for a few minutes when it's just me and God. And, I have to say I love the old churches with little cubby holes and niches to ust be in.
Let the US Bishop's answer the question . . . They chose to close churches during COVID, said just watch Holy Mass on TV it'll be alright - - play stupid games, win stupid prizes!
In March 2022, my family and I began making the 45 minute drive to TLM (ALWAYS OPEN) and have never looked back.
Here in GB all churches were closed by law for over 3 months in the spring/earlt summer of 2020, and again for 1 month in the autumn. However attendance has now recovered to approximately pre Covid levels.
God is in control 🙏🏾I have full trust and confidence in Jesus. I will never stop trusting in Jesus, even though I’m struggling putting groceries in my refrigerator, and paying bills. Like so many others, I lost my job as a social worker at Forsyth because I declined the vaccine. I declined because of my pre existing health condition (Lupus) and Heart disease. I was denied my medical/religious exemption from Forsyth Hospital. I’m waitressing but not making nearly enough to make ends meet. My husband died years ago. I’m all alone. I’m a single mother with two beautiful children both of my sons are autistic. So I’m overwhelmed at times because they require so much more from me. Sometimes I want to give up. But God keeps me going. Every month is a struggle, to not end up on the streets with my little boys. BUT I have faith God will provide.❤️He HAS so FAR. With God all things are possible.
God bless you and your children. Your strength of character shines through and will bless many who read this.
My parish just got a new priest. One of the first things he did was cut the UA-cam feed. The seats filled up again almost immediately. Also, the new priest is a traditionalist, he gives me the sense that he is a true shepherd leading his flock. His authenticity goes a LONG way. I feel that most Catholics want their priest to truly lead and to be a rock. The more the priest blows with the winds of the times, the emptier the seats will become.
Father Cadin and Ms. Alvarado, thank you both so very much for your insightful and informative comments on the state of the Church. My observation an increase in several parishes where I reside in Mass attendance, a most welcome change. I believe that we members of the church are the " boots on the ground", who can reach out to family and friends who have fallen away.
Godspeed.
Father, you are very much in tune with this age. We look for Jesus, thank God for your vocation Father, as well as EWTN. Only you and me Shaun, wheres the other 7?
We do pick and choose based on the priest, the mission of the church, the atmosphere of the church. The singing, the people.
Bring back the Latin Mass, Bring back the Catechism. Bring back apologetics
How about bring back Jesus!!!
The first 1:30 minutes explains why church attendance is so low.
Fr. Cadin had trouble answering Montse's questions DIRECTLY and SIMPLY.
Our Archdiocese of Santa Fe NM allowed the closure of Churches in San Diego Mission just as parishioners were beginning to get back to attendance. What's that all about?
Limiting the Tridentine Mass is a disaster for the Church. The way the mass is offered in 95% of the churches in America has turned Catholics away.Teach the priests to offer the Holy Mass strictly according to the rubrics.Return some latin to every mass. The Sanctus,Agnus Dei etc.Restore chant to the mass and restore traditional hymns.
AND ENOUGH WITH THE SINGING!!! 😡😡😡
I would love to return to mass but have been told I can’t because I am divorced.
That is COMPLETELY INACCURATE....You SHOULD go back...TOMORROW! I am amazed you were given such backwards info....GO forth - with BLESSINGS!....while it IS true that you may not be able to receive the Eucharist yet, you CERTAINLY should attend Mass. ~ :)
Go anyway. Mass is open to all.
@@davidcole333 I thank you.
Who would want to attend a Mass that is not reverent?
People have a sense on a properly celebrated Mass.
The spirit gives a person that sense.
Many homilies by priests are non-sense ‘secular feel-goody crap’.
Enforce proper priest celebration of the Mass by following the rubrics
and the use of Latin in the Ordinary of the Mass per Vatican II’s prescription.
Christianity has been in decline since about 1500 or in other words since the end of the medieval period. We today can barely imagine the power of the Roman Catholic Church at its height in the 15th century, as well as the Eastern Orthodox Churches. Perhaps the closest modern parallel would be the Soviet Communist Party in 1950.
Sorry not that way here in Canada.Americans are too lacks and feel that they are privileged.
problem is vatican ll
Catholics operate from fear and run to church every Sunday to sit in their pew while the priest does everything!
Declining attendance is actually going to help the Catholic Church do what Jesus wanted His churches to do: get involved in helping people!
Jesus was not about ceremony and, in fact, did not preach from the bible! He actually fed those in attendance!
Catholics are starting to realize that the habits that the Catholic Church encourages are not Jesus-driven.
Jesus was all about love, charity, and acceptance - not about ceremony and habit!
It’s because of the hierarchy and clergy that Catholics are leaving. The church no longer reflects the face and nature of Christ. It’s become a show with those stupid songs being sung throughout the entire mass. There’s no time for reflection, no reverence. One should feel fed and inspired after mass. I feel angry and resentful. All your bright, shiny words mean nothing. It’s excruciating trying to sit through what they call Mass today. We need the reverence and quiet of the Latin Mass.
