One of the first cassette tapes we bought at the old Atlantic Video in Dallas in the early 90's was of Tabla Wizard Samta Prasad. Still listening to it some 30 years later. He swings like crazy.... sometimes sounds like an entire herd of charging horses..... powerful.
Well said, the best tabalist of Banaras Gharana. Just check out for his 1969 Bangla Uttam - Supriya movie "Chirodiner" / forever, with emphasis on the Kolkata, India New Empire theatre tabla fusion.
He is great not only because of his tabla but also because of tough times he went through.....he was guru of my father too 🙏🙏Few Legends of Tabla India has ever seen...such a simple and down to earth person
मुझे यह सौभाग्य प्राप्त रहा कि मैं इस महान तबलावादक एवं असाधारण ब्यक्तित्व के धनी पं शामता प्रसाद मिश्र उर्फ गुद ई महाराज के सम्पर्क में उनका पड़ोसी रहा. महाराज का जीवन अति साधारण रहा, वह एक गमछा कमर में धारण करते थे और एक गमछा कन्धों पर रख कर जीवन पर्यन्त काशी में विचरण करते रहे.
ऐसा तबला सुनने नही मिलता.
धन्य है यह धरा जिस पर ऐंसे महान कलाकार ने जन्म लिया था।स्वरस्वती पुत्र कहूँ तो अतिशियोक्ति नहीं। मै इनके चरणों में शत शत नमन करता हूँ।

This Ustad Ji/Pundit Sahib is easily one of the top 5 Tabla Vadaks of all time. Powerful yet clear. His patterns are intricate, effortless, and beautiful. He has maintained his identity and style of ghrana with utmpst grace. A great great exponent.

One of the greatest tabla players of Banaras Gharana. I was in school in the 60's when I went with my father and uncle in Delhi's Modern School's Shankar Lal Music Festival where he played with Ustad Vilayat Khan, and it was an amazing night. It is still embedded in my memories. Vanday Maatram. Jai Bharat who gave us such great legends.

He was one of great Tabla legend of our country.I met him in 1988 in Varanasi in All India Radio.Great human and Artist.
How does one know through a single meeting in all india radio if someone was a good human being?
His son PT.kumar Lal jee Mishra played Tabla with me many times in A.I.R. Varanasi.

Well pointed out. I have been trying to tell this all the time, but have been criticized as I had chosen to omit another big name who I have always thought as slightly overrated. Now it is anybody's guess.

जब साक्षात्कार लेने वाला भी विषय का जानकार हो तो फिर कलाकार साक्षात्कार को जीवंत बना देता है। पंडित सामता प्रसाद अद्भुत तबला वादक थे पर साथ ही एक जमीन से जुड़े हुए मेहनती, संघर्षशील और सादगी पसंद इंसान थे।
नाचे मन मोरा मगन तिठका धिकी धिकी में बजाया हुआ तबला हिन्दुस्तानी जान मानस पर सदा के लिए अमिट रहेगा।

Ustad Zakir Hussain had adopted, emulated and improvised many elements of the great Pandit Gudai Mahraj-ji in his playing.
Please expand. Composition wise he seems more reliant on thirakwa khan sahab.
Dr. Hazra , Sir, to my knowledge, Ustad Allar Khan Saheb had sent Ustad Zakirbhai to Pt Shamtaji ,especially to master the Baya..
