One additional thing to mention is trade and sign. For new fans, this is where the selling team trades a pending UFA and the buying team immediately signs them to a contract extension. A recent example is Seth Jones, who Columbus traded to Chicago for multiple picks and prospects over the summer as he entered the final year of his contract this season. Chicago then immediately signed Jones to a massive 8 year contract. The new contracts are worked out between the player, their agent, and the buying team before the trade is approved. Teams do this because the seller can get a higher price (the player is no longer just a rental) and the buyer knows that they will have the player for many years to come. Most often this happens with star players who can't agree to an extension with their existing team. Nashville's Filip Forsberg is a potential trade-and-sign target if he and Nashville can't agree on an extension by the trade deadline.

My question is why they trade in the middle of the season right before playoffs? Also it’s immediate right? So they have to leave the team they played with all season and start over with a new team for the playoffs?
As someone trying to understand the trade concept this completely changed my understanding of it , thank you so much for such a clear video
