My mom heard his name and went to the bookshelf and grabbed the proof for "The Shivered Sky" which, according to his acknowledgements, was his *first ever book* which she *published* as part of Silver Lake Publishing back in 2003. Holy fuck. We're so glad he's doing well, she loves that book and wanted me to read it when I grew up (I was a toddler when it got published) so hearing he got a contract was incredibly exciting.

Great to hear a shout-out for Phil Foglio - I stumbled across him from Dragon magazine back in my youth thanks to D&D and the local hole-in-the-wall game store, and decades later rediscovered him when "The Internet" had become a thing. (Yes, I am older than The Internet. 😜) It was one of those things where I stumbled across Girl Genius from some totally random path, had a moment of "hey, something about this seems somehow ... familiar ..." Phil's drawing style and story-telling had evolved tremendously, but there was still some core that was recognizable. I sometimes wonder if I'd only seen OSP videos and then decades later found Aurora if I'd have that same feeling of "this isn't that, and yet ... this ... this feels fundamentally ... Red"

29:55 i went in the complete opposite direction lol. my first project IS my passion project that means so much to me that at one point i considered it my only reason to live. (i got extremely sick for a few years, i almost died and it sucked, but i'm better now! yay!) getting out of that headspace took making something that i knew i would be making regardless, even if the entire world hated it. this is for ME, and any criticism i could get doesn't hold a shred of a candle to my (once) very real fear of dying before i get to finish it. lucky for me, i've gotten no criticism at all in the last 2 years of posting my comic online! it has it's flaws, but everyone loves it anyway and now i feel like an idiot for having taken so long to put myself out there. life is short! make art!!!!

One tip about criticism that I picked up from Larry Niven in one of his essays is that other people are generally very good at identifying where something isn't working for them, but not great at identifying what isn't working for them, and terrible at knowing how to fix it. If someone complains about something specific in your work, it's probably worth thinking about whether they have a point (it's possible that the reason something doesn't work for them is because they're not part of the target audience, in which case you can probably ignore them), but you should absolutely make your own decisions about how to fix things.
Maybe the problem isn't that you misspelled a word, but that you waited too long before using a word you wanted to mis-spell for effect? Okay, chances are that simple spelling and grammar errors are genuine errors rather than deliberate stylistic choice, but, even so... And when you get into more subtle considerations, once you understand their point, it's up to you to decide what you actually want to do about it.

I love it when my characters surprise me. I’m in for getting around two arcs into a story and my protagonist had this big issue with revealing a certain piece of information. A little part of that was plot but not entirely. the story would work just fine if he told people. I knew he had the issue, but I couldn’t figure out what it was until I got to the end of that second arc, and it all made sense. And it was shocking and really exciting because my subconscious figured out the character far before I did.

When you talk about watching episodes out of order and figuring out the context, it reminds me of my experience with Attack on Titan. When I watched through the show for the first time I accidentally skipped season three part two. And if you’ve seen it, you know that season three part two is the biggest turning point in the entire series. That’s when all the mysteries are explained. There are some really important fights. And so I enter season four completely confused, and I have the time of my life with it. I’m figuring out all the way the world is recontextualize and the character development. “ What happened to this character? And when did they lose an eye? Who the heck is Zeke?” Then I found the opening song for S3 Pt2 and I was none in the wiser. “I don’t remember this op? I must’ve missed it? Huh… wait this opening reveals information about gap in the show! Woah!” Shortly after that, it clicked. I realize I skipped a season and went back to watch it. That season and that opening song are my favorite in the series either upon their own merits or my active engagement with them. Most likely both.

There's a belief nowadays that if you give any sort of feedback that could even REMOTELY be considered negative then it's rude and could conceivably scare someone away from continuing writing. But if we're not supposed to write thinking of bad faith readers, why are we expected to review for them?

Red's point of the empy space, implied story, and getting people into art by picking a random middle bit to show off is LITERALLY how I got into Star Trek and Spider-Man! I had tried before to watch Star Trek, working chronologically through TOS and TNG, but only got a couple episodes into either one. Then I heard about DS9, started watching it, and got so hooked that I watched THE ENTIRE ENTERPRISE TO VOYAGER CHRONOLOGICAL BACKLOG IN SIX MONTHS. And also got really obsessed with Vulcans to the level that I learned a bit of Golic Vulcan. Recently, I remembered watching Into The Spiderverse around the same time I started hearing about the incredible practical effects in Spider-Man 2, watched the movie, aaand oops now I'm kinda obsessed with Doc Ock and working through the bits of the Spider-Man backlog that interest me (including comics, which are very hard for me to read, so I'm expanding my comfort zone here). I'm telling you, that strategy is magic. I didn't get why people liked Star Trek until I watched DS9 and got some alien slice of life stories, which got me into the rest of Trek with the assumptions and implications of lore they drop in that show, and the time the show gives you to quietly get very attached to characters and then want to know what the history behind them is. I didn't get why people liked Spider-Man (and as a kid I especially didn't like him because I was arachnophobic) or superheroes in general until very recently, when I figured out I actually really love superhero stories when they feel very grounded in a familiar, realistic modern world (as little magic tech as you can put in, please, I want it to feel like this could plausibly be stuff that happens in the world I live in, to some degree). Now I find him quite compelling, and I can't wait to watch and read more.
On the creative end of things, this video was a boon. I've been thinking about my writing and (hopefully) eventually publishing a lot lately, because structurally, I'm really struggling with the two books I'm trying to write. Which means I'm basically spinning in circles. So I've just been worldbuilding, writing little scenes I'm quite sure of, and writing other stuff (and reading A LOT) to see if that gets the juices flowing. Writing completely different short stories and fanfic is nice practice, but I hope I figure out a way to pull myself through this rut soon, because it sucks. Hearing some practical advice on writing beyond "Are you a plotter or a pantser? Figure it out :)" and ESPECIALLY hearing advice from writers with ADHD (undiagnosed at the moment but hello yes it is I, Probable ADHD McGee) is making me feel more like, "Alright, I can do this, and I've got a roadmap here." It's very nice.
Also, if anyone's got advice on writing novels when you've got ADHD, PLEASE LET ME KNOW ABOUT IT. This shit is so hard and I am ass at time management

I really didn't know what the goal was today actually know what it was. Now I read stories where everything begins in the middle, I don't know why chinese manhwa does this but I've been really into it, lately. And because of this I have started learn Mandarin Chinese. At this point I just read a lot of other people's stuff, then for the things that I have opinions for I just start writing poetry. Now if people like it when I write poetry about their stuff, I'm actually not quite sure. You'd just have to find a few (rookie or pro) voice actors and maybe one editor to write over the small jokes do you have in the background frames. It'd be hard to find a voice like reds but I'm imagining blues videos but with the most attractive Spanish accent there's ever been. Like way too much for a history video. And reds would all sound like her but there'd just be one that's just voiced by the best Optimus prime impressionist for funzys.

59:34 To add to Reds point, the most fun I had with some stories/musicals/whatever was watching Animatics, MAPs, Fansongs or AMVs with little to no context because my brain would make up the connective tissue in between. Especially if its Fandom A MAP set to Fandom B song the resulting stories can be so different from the originial (plus, Im not an english native speaker so I might interpret lyrics slightly differently, ESPECIALLY when I was younger and worse at the language). Just look at the Dream SMP animatics, on average those are more fun than the actual main piece of media (a bunch of different peoples Minecraft streams). I found Hamilton through a Warrior Cats MAP for Wait for It - but not knowing american history and my only point of interpretation being knowing the animated characters I thought Burr was the protagonist, Hamilton an enemy General who was Burrs begrudgingly respected arch enemy etc. This MAP is probably the reason why the song is still my favourite from the musical and why I might be more sympathetic to Burr than if I had started at the first song of the musical without animated cats fighting as visuals...

Gotta partially disagree with Red saying its not constructive criticism on the channel, cause while its not within the colloquial meaning/understanding of the phrase, it is constructive for viewers and from the sounds of it also for herself, and it is quite often criticism. (I say this as someone for whom a lot of these topics were deeply poisoned when younger, and is now learning through this channel and other places to take another look while working on my own writing, and so on multiple occasions already the commentary has also wound up indirectly fulfilling the more standard conception of constructive criticism)

Adhd is also just genuinely common (ish) and we are better at diagnosing it in its more subtle forms and expressions in people.
That being said, i dont know if there are any official studies out there about it

Where as part of the conceit of The Lord of the Rings is that it is in universe a translation of Frodo's written account, the conceit of the Venezia is that it is the translation of an original Italian version with that original version is also coming with the book

We really need to bring back the word "fortnight" so we can say "fortnightly" and we don't have to explain biweekly. What's the point of using a word that then immediately needs to be explained? Bring back fortnightly and biweekly makes sense again! Explanation free 😊

Even if you improvise your writing you are still making choices, characters aren’t real and you as a writer are in charge of them.

I do improv comedy for fun and I’m a pure pantser, and every choice I make is still a choice, even if it feels like a natural choice. Characters aren’t people they are characters in your head that you are writing.
