PLEASE SPARE ME THE COMPARISONS OF LISZT TO JOHN LENNON IN THE COMMENTS, AND MICHAEL JACKSON IN THE VIDEO - SURE THEY WERE LEADERS IN POP MUSIC AND WROTE A FEW GOOD SONGS, BUT LISZT WAS THE GREATEST COLOSSAL GENIUS TO EVER LIVE........ GENIUS ISN'T EVEN A BIG ENOUGH WORD FOR HIM.
IT'S LIKE COMPARING A NICE COZY HOME BUILDER WITH THE ARCHITECT OF A SKYSCRAPER, OR EVEN A ROCKET BUILDER WHO CAN TAKE ONE TO OTHER WORLDS........
LISZT WAS FAR TOO PROLIFIC AND PROFICIENT AT THE PIANO, AND CARVED OUT WAY TOO MANY NEW WORLDS FOR US TO ENJOY BY SHEER HARD WORK AND TALENT, TO BE SUBJECTED TO SUCH SILLY COMPARISONS TO A COUPLE TUNE SMITHS WHO WROTE A COUPLE DOZEN LITTLE DITTYS BETWEEN THEM, TOTAL.....LISZT TOWERED ABOVE THEM, AND EVERYONE ELSE FOR THAT MATTER, AND ANYONE WHO DISAGREES DOESN'T KNOW LISZT, AND HOW PROLIFIC HE WAS...... MOST PIANO PLAYERS DON'T EVEN KNOW MUCH LISZT......HE COVERED MORE GROUND, AND SOARED HIGHER AND FARTHER EVEN ABOVE THE GROUND, THAN ANYONE WHO HAS EVER LIVED, PERIOD !!!

Well... don't forget papa Haydn.... (Beethoven and JS Bach) BUT YES! Liszt doesn't get enough... and he expanded musical language (in a GREAT way) like NO one else... brought us to French Impressionism... and Russian Noe-Classicism... and so much, much MORE!

@@chpnlzt Liszt son in Law, R. Wagner...came to Liszt in Weimar, after the Dresden uprising. running from being arrested. Liszt gave him money, forged a fake passport and sent him on his way to Switzerland. Wagner was banned from Germany, and his music, except Welmar.. for twelve years, during which time Liszt kept his music alive. Liszt actually was responsible for securing a pardon, from the King of Saxony, where Wagner returned to Weimar. Both collaborated with there respected talents..

Cecil! you're such a Liszt fan! You should make a film about how Liszt inspired Rimsky-Korsakov to come up with his Octatonic techniques, which he taught to Stravinsky. How, in Stravinsky we finally see fully Octatonic music, born from the great improvisers like Liszt and even Scarlatti. People STILL consider Stravinsky's music "Bitonal" which I'm sure you agree is a rather dubious concept! I'd watch that :p

His descendant, Wolfgang Wagner, his great grandson, was also in the Waffen S. S. In WWII.
The Wagner's who were related to Liszt via his daughter's , Cosima, marriage to German Composer and Proto Fascist, Richard Wagner, were close friends of the Führer and fervent supporters of the N.S.D.A.P.
Liszt must of rolled in his grave!
Wagner even accused Liszt of being a Jew, in his autobiography: "Mein Leben".
But regardless of these colorful historic relationships, Liszt was a rock star!
He was known to be very generous with his pupils, sometimes not even charging those less fortunate for private piano lessons.
Liszt was a Nobleman by nature!
    The Prince of the Pianoforte.
I had the good fortune of studying piano with a pupil of a pupil: Emil von Sauer, Franz Liszt's star pupil.

If you are a student of Music History, and would be interested in Franz Liszt, you will not find it here. There are several, not only mistakes, but exaggerations that do ill will to the Composer. If truly interested, go no further that Alan Walker, whose twenty five year research, his life work, as it is, is the definitive justice to, again, the Composer. Also you may Google Prof. Walkers lecture, very enlightening indeed. Enjoy...

After reading about Liszt in Alan Walker's amazing book series, his genius of complex music, pushing the envelope and musical innovation reminded me of John Lennon. And the picture of Franz at 4:03 even shows an erie resemblance to each other. Franz was truly the first rock star..

The text of this preview is inspiring to listen to, but the unremarkable music in the background does Liszt no favours, unfortunately... What does the trick is to hear top performers play his most spectacular, magical, imaginative and dramatic music. That's what made me into a pianist many years ago, and I acknowledge the debt owed to the radio programmes which introduced me to it. With all due respect, it makes me angry to hear such a master as Liszt advertised by what is possibly his most uninteresting piece of music. I don't even know it, and I know a lot of Liszt.

Comparing Liszt to micheal jackson is completely absurd . His music is still played today . Michael's few pieces are only played in the U S and at the present rate will even sink into obscurity in a year or two . He had no flashing lights and loud razamataz.......only a piano on a bare stage . Alan Walker 3 volume treatise on Lizst talks about art critics describing his concerts as an " experience " ........only just a piano and a bare stage . It is like comparing Chinese 5000 year + history with the 200 yr of the U S . Just simply absurd .

Funny. I never liked him. Most of his compositions are masturbating on piano keys but few compositions like campanella and liebestraum are good

You dont even have any idea what you're talking about, clearly you haven't given Liszt any listen beyond HR2 and la campanella. How dare you say he's mediocre without even knowing what he did. You should listen to his actual pieces, you know like the b minor sonata, the concertos, the dante sonata, the petrarch sonnets, the years of pilgrimage, the mephisto waltzes, the symphonic poems and you will realise that you're full of shit and have no clue what the fuck you're talking about. Best regards dumbass.
