This was a fantastic trip to camp and rockhound one of the most beautiful spots I've ever camped before! The target for this trip was Michigan's state stone, the Petoskey stone. I especially wanted to find some good pieces for polishing as I learn more about working with stones/lapidary. We had a great time here exploring and combing the beaches and exploring all the trails near the lake. This is my first video where I went out camping to find stuff. If you like that sort of thing and enjoyed this video, make sure to let me know, hit that thumbs up button and subscribe!
Born and raised along the West Coast of MI, and sailed Lake Michigan pretty much my entire life. Raced in many sailboat regattas in the 90's throughout the '10's. Delivering the boat to whatever port the regattas were based was one of my favorite things to do. We usually delivered at night, especially if we had to cross the lake to get where we needed to be. Being in the middle of Lake Michigan on a starry summer's night and a cresent moon was incredible. We'd see a handful of shooting stars every time, and occasionally get a peek at the Northern Lights as well. Miss those times!
Good choice of cocktail! Coconut rum in fruit drink is excellent when on vacation! Funny thing is, I'd never even consider drinking it just around the house.
Something you may find here in Ohio, which I have not seen you look for yet, is our state fossil the Trilobite. The Flexicalemene variety is pretty common, as well as Gastropods, Brachiopods, Horned, and Spiny Corals. All the best to you!
I really enjoy your videos! You guys are so much fun to watch. Not only for the great rockhounding experiences, but also because you share your love, enthusiasum, respect, and appreciation for the beauty of Nature around you. I thank you for sharing your wonderful photos and videos of that, as well as your great rock finds! .
Thanks 4 visiting our great & wild state of Michigan the wonders here r endless I hope u took many of them home with u. Michigan's lakes & rivers r a rock hounds dreams & desires u won't b disappointed in the Great Lakes State of Michigan.
Я тоже люблю с детьми собирать интересные камешки на берегу моря,-мы летом были на берегу Азовского моря,и нашли кусочки пейзажной яшмы!😄У Вас природа красивая,и море тоже.😉
The best reasons to go camping? The company, the food, the campfire, and the alcohol! I love watching you guys, your enthusiasm for the hunt is contagious, inspiring me to get back home from camping (Just a joke - we have no house, just a caravan) and we now have 6 weeks before we take off on our own adventure around Australia! I love the photography, you can't do much better than moonsets and reflections, especially the Milky Way reflecting off the water! Kudos on the Petoskey Stone finds - that UV-light paid off big time, and Bri's last find certainly topped the list for the weekend. I'd LOVE to see more camping trips as the videos are a bit longer because you pack more time into them! Okay, you two, keep it safe and I'll see you in the next one. Cheers!
I so enjoy these little trips with you...camping .fishing...looking for mushrooms..and special rocks...reminds me when I was young doing all this with my parents..God rest their souls...but have fun doing what you do and thanks for the education
"I think the real fun is about to begin when the sun goes down..." Chicka, Chicka, bow, wow!! LOL! I had the idea of making a lamp shade from thin slices of petosky stones, polished and afixed like stained glass. Imagine how cool that would look with a uv bulb!
I was born and raised in lower Michigan and never got to experience going to the lake to find Petoskey stones. I live in South Carolina now. I have some that I bought but going live like you all did is amazing!! I really love your videos and will keep watching them!! Thank you so much for what you do for people like me.
Wow guys, this has got to be your best video yet ! ! ! I loved it . Do more, more, more, please ? I would so love to go there and collect those thin round stones you showed us first, to paint on them ! But I don't know if I could ever pull myself away. BEAUTIFUL !! !! Love you two and hope you do this kind of thing again & again all over this country. I wouldn't miss one of your adventures. Thanks so much !!
Cris, It was good to see you and Bree out in a beautiful location, having fun and finding something new to you. The lights were a great addition to the hunt. Would love to see more camping vids like this one. : ) Oh and I won't tell your Momma.
You brought back some good memories from when I was a kid, camping and fishing in lake Michigan with my family back in the 70s. I still have my big piece of petoskey stone I found on the beach then.
Wonderful video, Cris & Bree! I love that you're telling the story of your trip (or at least the parts of the story you can share on YewTewb). You guys should go camping more often and take us along for the ride. Gorgeous Petoskey stones, too. If you could, would you explain WHY these things phosphoresce? I've always wondered. Obviously, I could look it up, but it'd be fun to hear you 'splain it to us (especially since some of the other fossils / crystals you find are also phosphorescent).
I don't usually comment on your videos as you have such a huge following. But THIS video was my favorite of all of them! Thanks, Chris, for letting me experience the Michigan beauty!
Thank you for watching and commenting here Ginger! I appreciate and read every comment I get. I’m glad you were able to experience the beauty of here like we did through the video! I’ll do my best to make a lot more like this for you and anybody else who enjoys them.
Welcome to my home state guys. It truly is a beautiful place. petoskeys are great but dont forget the yooperlites. little Birds nest is i believe a hummingbird nest. The knot on the tree is called a Burl and is sought after by woodturners for its unique grain patterns.
So glad that you went with Kyle to Michigan you guys are like two peas in a pod I didn’t think he take that trip alone did you bring Bree with you I hope so she’d love to do some searching for stones Chris you are one of the best friends that Kyle has and I’m glad that you guys hang out together a lot
We call them Pie Iron Pizzas, or Pie Iron Cherry Pie, Pie Iron Grilled Cheese (so good with some tomato soup, as evening temperatures drop!), etc. When I was a kid, & also at the camp I worked at as a young adult, everyone called the devices you cook them in “pie irons,” as they are made of iron and you make different kinds of little pies inside two pieces of bread. Even a PBJ is excellent inside of these! We made breakfast sandwiches a couple of years, & it’s so much fun to experiment!! One time we made French toast and had some left over. So at the next meal, we used the French toast instead of regular bread in the pie irons. We added wild raspberries we had picked, along with some maple syrup on the insides. Wow those were tasty! When we make the pizza, we usually like to add one other topping besides sauce & cheese, such as turkey pepperoni, olives, mushrooms etc. Next time we’re going to try some wonton wrappers, and see if we can put Eggroll filling and Crab Rangoon filling in them, over the fire! Enjoy! 🌲🔥🏕🛶🌅🌲
My grandma who passed away a couple years back left behind a lot of cool stuff for me. One of the things I recently found (a week or two ago) was one of these rocks. I didn't know what it was and your video popped up in my recommended. Super cool that I now know what it is :)
Love your excitement for finding petoskey stones and the night sky pictures! We used to make those pizzas in the pie irons when the kids were little...brought make great memories! Thanks for sharing !
Looks like you had a wonderful time in my wonderland, thank you for visiting and sharing your beautiful experiences with us. I myself is all about the sunset coast, but if you're looking for a wonderful rock experiences the sunrise side will blow you away with all the different fossil rocks. There is State parks where if you're up to hike or kayaking out of them for a little float, you will leave blown away.
Your 1st dance with the pole reminded me of The Nerds movie, where they make a special javelin spear for that one guy. It flexed to fit the way he ran & threw.
What an amazing video, my friend! Nice camping! The nature is amazing.. Enjoyed watching. Cheers from Russia, Chris, and welcome to my channel about bushcraft! Best regards, Yuriy!
Love your videos. You guys should’ve went a little further north and looked for Michigan’s gem stone . The royal island green stone.any next time Michigan is so beautiful especially in the fall in the upper peninsula. May God bless and keep you both.
If you ever come to Ontario's "west coast" on Lake Huron, you will find lots of Petoskey stones on any gravelly Beach like the Pinery or further north.
it seems Bree finds everything, I remember seeing a video when you guys were in kentucky or tennessee, that was you guys wasnt it???? she was finding everything. lol! Go Bree!
It's awesome to see people not from here who get to experience Michigan, and realize how beautiful and underrated it is!
I've had my eye on going up there the last couple years. It looks gorgeous. Very inviting when you're in Texas sweating like a mad man.
It really is very, very underrated. I love the state.
@@PaleoCris We try to keep it that way. It's our little secret!! LOL
.. and for dessert 2 slices bread and a can of pie filling in the campfire toasters. Use oil spray or rub stick butter on sides for non stick. Yum!🤗
@@lisa-fg8zh We called those "hobo pies". Not sure if that's the "official" name or not though! ;)
i’m the only one wondering about this campground? 😂 perfect, on the water, rocks, kayaking to that island. this is just perfect
Petoskey State Park I think. I'm trying to figure it out to go there myself.
Fisherman’s Island State Park.

You should swing through Missouri sometime! I got some crazy spots for lace agate I druse quartz could show you 👍🏼
Nice adventure, cool finds! Enjoyed the bonus moon and milky way stills too!
You brought back some good memories from when I was a kid, camping and fishing in lake Michigan with my family back in the 70s. I still have my big piece of petoskey stone I found on the beach then.
I had no clue about Charlevoix stone. I always thought of it as underdeveloped Petoskey stone. You're actually up near Charlevoix somewhere.
I love watching you hunting beautiful stone take care guys

You can also make them like desserts, add apple pie filling 😋. We call them mountain pies whether there is fruit or meat and cheese in them.
That’s a great idea! I can’t wait to try that.
Pudgie Pies is what we call them in WI, at least my part of the state.
