Living in a PAL Country Australia I did not see Many laserdiscs releases during their peak 1980 to 2000 but the occasions I did I was so very impressed feeling they were ahead of their time
Yay! I always enjoy your laserdisc updates. Damn I don't know how you manage to find discs so cheap. My neck of the woods the few places I find them always price them between 5-10 dollars. But at least this holiday I got lifted the Jaws Limited Edition Signature Collection set. Book and CD included, how I love these elaborate box sets.
@@joem5909 I get lucky with my local store occasionally getting in a collection and then marking some discs on clearance. But the major assistance is McKays getting LDs sporadically and marking them at 95 cents or less for non popular titles.
@@DianeCee57 I would occasionally see them as a kid in the 90s and only got to try one decades later. It’s such a fun format to collect if you get into it.
Some incredible scores! Congrats on Stepford Wives and Hard Eight! Lots of other very interesting-looking films. Fierce Creatures is the only one of these I have on laser.
@@slave_to_cinema Definitely get the letterbox pressing! Not only does it have one of the best picture transfers I’ve ever seen on the format, but it’s the only source of the original mono mix.
Now that The Searchers is out on UHD from Warner Archive, I would love to see a comparison video between that and previous home video releases. Apparently the new restoration corrects all issues that were present on the 2006 Blu-ray; including grain management, horizontal stretching, over-sharpening and inaccurate color timing.
@@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader Robert Meyer Burnett mentioned the Warner 4k of The Searchers and said was very happy with it but will be interested in your opinion & review.
@@benbanks6302 that’s how I started collecting more and more. I was especially broke after graduating from college and would just look around for LDs that were cheap.
I wanted to ask you if you've thought about giving the new remake of Nosferatu a chance? As someone who respects the original 1922 film, it does look interesting and might be worth a look. Also, I wanted to ask if you've ever thought about doing a retrospective on the original film, as well as talk about any note worthy home video releases of the film? Edit: I just checked and realized that you made a video about the Eureka and BFI releases. My apologies.
I stopped collecting when prices skyrocketed due to ebay fees and inflation. I will look for deals, but they seldom arrive. My last haul was Bubblegum Crash OVA from Japan.
@@matthewgaudet4064 I’m lucky in that I have some good local stores that will price most titles affordably and sometimes dirt cheap. But they only get discs in sporadically so you never know what will turn up. And then others will randomly price certain titles at crazy amounts.
@@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader , Yeah, we don't have a McKay's. The good wills stopped selling them and allowing them to be sold. The laserdisc of Mann's CIMARRON is matrixed CinemaScope 4-track magnetic like the Warner Archive blu-ray version. Luckily we're getting NIGHT MOVES from Criterion next year in 4K, so it's finally getting it's due. LAST OF THE DOGMEN is a remarkably good western of its kind - there were two soundtracks - one with narration by Wilford Brimley, and another, the director's preferred version, without (if you enjoy it, I recommend the excellent Kino Lorber blu-ray). I'm wondering how you are evaluating quality on film soundtracks. Do you do it by ear or do you have some kind of frequency analyzer to determine the noise floor and any high or low frequency distortion?
@@TheVid54 I still need to pick up the archive Blu-ray of Cimarron. Criterion announced night moves for UHD right after I recorded this and it blew my mind. I do a mixture of ways at looking at audio. I do basic comparisons by ear at first, but usually I’m making captures of the audio and then comparing directly in sound software looking at waveforms.
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader awesome what do you think of it is it a good transfer I already bought it based on reviews but I held off on the godfather set based on your review lol.
@@conservativecarnage3783 Still waiting for a Blu-ray or 4K of the Godfather Complete Epic. That's how I first saw 1 & 2 and can stop when 3 kicks in. It's not TERRIBLE, just the least of the trilogy. Ford Fairlane is a favorite and I watched it often back in the day. You can tell Renny Harlin was having fun making it with some really good cinematography and a rocking soundtrack. IIRC on the commentary Dice told Harlin to have fun because they were never going to have a chance to make a movie like that again.
