    Thanks for the walk through. It took me 3hrs. Only $50 in parts. Midas wanted close to $500. Good tip on the two hard to reach bolts using flex head wrench!

    Crazy number of steps but not all that hard really, just have to go reeeeeal slow, unless you're a professional mechanic. I'm not. So here's my tip for anyone actually doing this. Change the ignition coils at the same time, eBay offers a whole set of 6 pretty cheap and if you let a shop do it when one does go it's crazy expensive. And then, change that rear valve cover gasket at the same time while you have all that crap off, just do it. And finally, have all the parts marked out, ready to go. I also used colored magic markers on the vacuum line ends. Great video, helped me tons. Saved me 500 bucks. THANKS!

      I agree that I would change the 3 rear coils while you are back there. But don't use those cheap Ebay ones, they will fail and you'll be back there again in 30k miles. Use Denso coils from Rock Auto (about $50 each but worth it), Denso Iridium plugs and you won't have to go back there for another 100k miles. Denso is the OEM supplier for Toyota/Lexus ignition parts.

    I have a 2000 Lexus ES300. You DONT have to remove anything, the process in this video just shows how to get easy access to the plugs. I replaced all 6 plugs in my engine yesterday without touching the intake assembly. I even got the back 3 plugs with the engine cover on.
    The hardest part is getting the old electrical connectors off, but the trick is to get small needle nose vise grips to lightly hold the plastic connector tab open, and then use a medium sized flat head screwdriver to wedge the connector off of the coil pack.

    I have one question about idling on 2002 es300. I have recently replaced a battery in my car. My car starts and idles about 800 rpm when it is cold but when it warms up, idle will drop all the way to zero then stall. I can still drive the car but I have to put a foot on brake and a foot on gas pedal to keep idle up at stops and lights. Lots of people have the same problem after replacing the battery. Could you help me ( others ) out by giving us some advice and instructions on how to fix it. I really appreciate your help in advance.

      It’s took me 2 days to think about it and I know . You need to remove all engine air filters + box out then spray into throttle with the carburetor cleaner then clean all the gut ( old oil stick all around in side the throttle) when it’s cleaned . Put air filter + box .. back on and it’s will be good to start the engine. Well done

      @@nicknguyen4181 you're correct. I had the same problem when I unplugged the battery to do electrical work. Cleaned out just the front end of the throttle body and it fired up, sitting at about 600rpms. Still gotta clean the rear when I do my plugs. Wish me luck.

    I have a 2002 ES 300 Lexus, from OBD reader, the 6 plugs need to be changed. I have changed all 6 with new plugs and including the ignition coil, works well for a week at most and begins to misfire and takes up more fuel. Check with the OBD reader again, it says all 6 needs to be changed. Manually bringing out the ignition coil and plugs, you will see they are all bad already. I have done this changing of ignition coil and plugs more than 4 times without getting the solution.
    Please what else can I do to solve this problem?

    How did you get the back support bolt for the plenum back in ? (Just feel it with fingers ?)

    • @HowtoAutomotive
      @HowtoAutomotive  5 років тому

      Easiest way to do it is to make sure the bottom bolt on the bracket is loose a little bit. And you can get that from underneath. Then you can reach your hands around the back of the manifold and start the bolt because you have a little bit of play to wiggle the bracket up and down left and right get the ball started.

    this appears to be ridiculously difficult just to change spark plugs. If I had known all this I would not have bought this car. I have always had cars where I could see the spark plugs and I always changed my own plugs. I need to be a Master Mechanic to do this job myself. I could get into too much trouble trying to do this job myself. Unfortunately my check engine light shows Plug 1 is misfiring. I sure will have to drive it this way for a while.

    • @HowtoAutomotive
      @HowtoAutomotive  8 років тому +1

      Sally Steele they don't make it easy anymore do they. If I was you I would take it in and have somebody replace that spark plug or replace the spark plugs. Driving it with a misfire is very dangerous for the catalytic converter. The gas is not being used in the combustion chamber goes down into the exhaust and gets re-burn in the cat and with all the additional fuel can cause it to melt.
