    I count Obsidian and Readwise to be two PKM apps that changed the way I think about and work with notes and highlights. Today, I'm adding a third to that list: Readwise Reader.
    If you haven't heard of Reader, it's basically Instapaper on steroids -- built by PKM nerds for PKM nerds. That means many of the challenges us oldies who used Instapaper back in the day have been solved by built-in workflows in the app.
    I seriously mean it when I say that Reader does everything it can to grease the wheels of reading, processing, and highlighting content you find on the web.
    When you're ready, there are three ways I can help:
    1. Join our newsletter for productivity tips: thinkeffective.co/join
    2. Go deeper with Obsidian: obsidianmadesimple.com

    This is a super helpful video - thank you for posting it. I’m a new Reader user and have found the tutorials created by the Reader team to be pretty unhelpful - too fast and confusing enough to make me wonder whether to delete the Reader app. By contrast, yours is great - a measured delivery with practical examples I can relate to. I’m now beginning to understand how I can leverage Reader for my own purposes. You have a new subscriber!

      I ended up deleting the reader and readwise. Like you said the tutorials were unhelpful and tying to set stuff up like rss feeds and email forwarding they would send an email with broken links you were supposed to click to confirm your actions so with the links being broken there was no way to confirm your action. contacting "help desk" was not helpful at all. long delays in getting a reply and the reply was always unhelpful as well. Gonna stick with Instapaper and pocket. not worth the hassle especially when you have to pay for it as well.

    I've seen a lot of people use this workflow, and I don't understand what the value is.
    When I read articles online, I have the article on one screen, and Obsidian open on a different screen.
    As I read the articles, I take notes straight into Obsidian.
    I later process those notes into atomic notes.
    I don't understand the value of highlighting the article, or of going back to the article later.

    • @EffectiveCo
      @EffectiveCo  Рік тому +5

      That’s totally fair and something I have done in the past as well.
      For one, many times I’m not reading at my computer. I’m on a Kindle reading books or on my phone catching up on articles, so this streamlines the process a bit.
      Two, Reader gives me an archived copy of the article I can go back to down the road. Link rot is a sadly real problem, and sometimes those articles disappear if I want to revisit the source text in the future.
      Lastly, the processing I do later is what you refer to as making them into atomic notes. I think of these highlight notes as literature notes from which I can develop permanent/atomic notes in my vault.
      Hope that helps!

    • @Jaszunai

      @@EffectiveCo thanks for the reply.
      I do a lot of reading on my phone, unfortunately it's not on Kindle, and the app I use doesn't have a Readwise extension so I always manually type all my highlights into Obsidian.
      Being able to save a copy of an article sounds interesting depending on how much storage I am given. I would mainly use it as a warehouse to throw things into until I need them later down the line.
      The thing I'm most interested in is being able to process PDFs in the browser, but I will have to wait to get into the beta to test that out.

    Great Review..Sounds like I will have to start subscribing the Readwise after watching your video! :)
    A few questions:
    Sounds like I can even replace my Bookmarking/Readlater services like Diigo, Pinboard, Pockets...etc? I find it so frustrating that I have juggle so many different platforms in order to achieve what I need:
    1: keep a copy of the original site(so even if original site removed, I still retain a copy
    2. allow easy export of all the bookmakrs, annotations, notes into a non-proprietary format or at least another service
    I would really appreciate your comment on this. :)

    • @EffectiveCo
      @EffectiveCo  Рік тому

      I’ve found Readwise can do the majority of that, including export to plaintext through an app like Obsidian (though it’s annotations and notes only so far, not full text of articles). Definitely recommend giving it a try if you’re looking at making a change.

    What would you recommend for gathering information from physical books? It seems that Readwise and Readwise Reader are just not the right product for that purpose. I wish they had something built-in to deal with manual notes that you can write from information from a book. Any advice here?

    Started using Reader and I have 2 questions. 1. How to export highlighted article from Reader to Roam/Obsidian etc (I can do it from Readwise but can't see how to do it from Reader) 2. A;so, can I search Reader by just document tag instead of the search displaying all references to the tag in search?

    • @EffectiveCo
      @EffectiveCo  Рік тому

      1. It doesn't export directly from Reader, but from the Readwise app (though they're tightly integrated) -- it only works on highlights and syncs them like it would highlights from a Kindle book.
      2. It doesn't appear there's that level of refinement in search yet - I'll reach out to the team and put it on their radar. I agree that might be helpful.

    I am not convinced that pasting volumes of quotes into a PKM is useful to me. I use my notes to remember things. Generally a few words and facts are enough. Any more than that, then it makes more sense to just link the original.
    Wish Kindle would allow a little copying but not worth £5, to £8, per month. Any PKM has tags, like "read-later" and can link to articles.
    Cannot decide between Obsidian (free) for Zettlecasten methed and CheckVist (free/chargeable) outlining. Most of my Obsidian notes become Outlines, but the jumping around notes in Obsidian is intriguing. Used both for a while. Obsidian is text-based like HTML but actually Markdown. I like text based things for long term use but you need to use your own cloud based storage to allow multi-device use. Whereas Checkvist is cloud-based with import/export options.
