Yeelight 2 - Connection Problem / Timeout FIXED

  • After a bit of luck while installing a second smarthome product... I accidentally fixed the problem I was facing with my XIAOMI Yeelight 2 not connecting. As it turns out the issue is the Router being set to 5Gzz and 2.4 Ghz. It needs to be set to 2.4 Ghz only to work.
Watch the rest of the video to hear me complain at length about XIAOMI.
Link to the Smart Power strip on Aliexpress. I'll post something if there's a fire in my flat over the next few weeks. I can't really see it being that useful in my own place but for Airbnb it'll be great.

I had that same problem (connection timeout) and I finally fixed it. It is much simpler apparently.
All you need to do is disable auto-connect to the WiFi networks on your phone. That way there will be enough time for the bulb to connect to its own network for a few seconds.
What is happening when auto-connect is on is that it does not let enough time to the bulb to connect to the temporary yeelight wifi before reconnecting to your network.
    Hope this helps.

❤❤❤ It's many years later, and I struggled all day reading all kinds of things on Reddit and everywhere else and I came to this video course I didn't find the answer from yeelights! I come to this video and read your comment and I turn off the auto connect, and started crying with joy it worked like a charm! I didn't really cry, but I was so happy. I found out one of the light bulbs doesn't work it will not reset it just flashes colors once and then goes to white. But three of my four bulbs connected, in a matter seconds and you are my new favorite person!!

in 2023, the issue is a mix of both this, and other stuff that took me a lot to find:
1- VERY IMPORTANT: check your router settings and search for the wifi security mode, this stupid device can't connect to a wireless network that has WPA3 security enabled, you need to change it to WPA2 only mode.
    - Bonus -
If your router supports it, enable a guest network, this is better than switching to 2.4 GHz and WPA2 on all of your house for a stupid light, make that guest wifi network 2.4G, and WPA2 mode only, then enjoy your 5GHz with WPA3, and let that stupid light use the guest network.
If your router doesn't support guest network, you need to change the main wifi to the above settings, which is something I wouldn't do for a light :)
2- if you changed the wifi password or name, the stupid mi home app will remember your old password for the network, uninstall and reinstall again to make sure the local data is erased.
hope that helps, it took me 3 hours ;)

Thanks for the video, you saved me a lot of frustrations. I was really happy when my second Yeelight arrived, but I wasn't able to connect it in any way. Every time the same annoying error that the device was disconnected. Just logged in to my router, disabled the 5Ghz band, restarted my router and within 30 seconds I had the second light up and running.

@@wangouthangout For me it's no real issue, indeed. I'm just wondering what will happen if I would enable the 5Ghz band again, now that the new Yeelight is connected and setup. Because my first Yeelight was working perfectly with both bands active. I'm wondering if disabling the band is only needed for the initial setup/installation.

had the same issue with my 2nd and 3rd yeelight bulb and the strip when i bought them together
what you need to do is use the 2.4Ghz only and if u got it in mixed mode disable it and just let it connect to 2.4Ghz
then on your yeelight app when it shows what wifi to connect to delete the wifi you got saved on the app and then select it again, Then try to set up your yeelight product . Worked for me like a charm since the first try.
hope it works for you guys and gals .

@@M1and5M I'm not sure what to do then, it wasn't a comprehensive troubleshoot for the yiilight. There are myriad other problems with it. I still to this day can't get it to remain connected for longer than 2 or 3 weeks without needing to set it up again. I've stopped using it now and advocate against buying it.
If you read some of the other comments here a few people found other things that worked for them instead.

I have found a very quick and easy solution to this problem.
    1. Go into the app
    2. Click on the light with the connection problem (it will show it to be offline).
    3. You will some information about how to connect it again.
    4. Click "submit" at the bottom to send an error report.
    5. Click OK, to send the report.
    6. Your light will now work.
I have done this about 3 times, and it has worked every time. I think it forces the bulb to re-establish a connection with the router.

Did it work at a further distance after initial setup? They mention that you should have the router pretty close to the bulb in the instructions. hey so i live in a student accomodation and my Mi LED smart bulb wouldnt connect to public wifi, so then i went ahead and got a linsys router EA2700. I connected it via internet and the bulb just wouldnt connect to the router. The bulb isnt that far from the router (maybe 1m). Ive tried all of the following fixes:
    1) switched off 5ghz
    2) Easy password with no special characters
3)Used mainland china as the server
    4)Changed router DNS to google's

My problem is more that my router offers a combined 5 Ghz and 2.4 Ghz mode. And the app didn't say change to 2.4 Ghz only.

Hey Richard, I was setting up an access point for my mum's house so I have internet from my room when I'm back visiting and it gave me an idea for you. You could buy a cheap 2.4Ghz router and just connect it to your main router via lan. Leave the old one running 5GHz/2.4GHz mode and have the AP set up for 2.4GHz and run the Xiaomi lights through that... It should solve your problem

@@erminc There is a very easy solution that works every time.
If your lights go offline, just do the following.
      1. Click on one of the lights
      2. Click submit error report at the bottom
      3. When submitted, check your lights.
      4. Try again, if they are not working. You may need to do this 3 or 4 times.
