Just a guess, but if vapor lock continues on long drives on nice warm days, perhaps it’s tied to the fuel tank not venting? Motorcycles can starve for fuel if vent in gas cap gets plugged...
Great video. The unintended content was prime. Seriously, doing a few "drive" videos of your area, with commentary on local history and geology would be good, with the jeep, of course.
You absolutely made the right choice about the cushion seats. I got mine during the restoration in 2008 from Beachwood Canvas. Great quality and very comfortable but obviously they will never have the nice pattern of the springs beneath. If this was available or if I was aware at the time I’d buy the ones you did. Who knows, for a next project maybe!? Cheers!
The BIG difference between your experience here and that in 1943 is the fuel ! Back then they had real petrol, the filthy stuff we are trying to run on now is a cocktail of many volatile chemicals, you will find that if you just pour a litre of Parrafin into your fuel tank it will reduce the evaporation point of the fuel and stop your gas lock, you can also lag the pipes where they run near the hot engine block, but the parrafin added will do the trick, and also reduce the octane of the fuel to somewhere near the original "pool petrol" octane which it was designed to run on, you could also pour a few gallons of Avgas in to tank as that does not have the awful volatile additives that road fuel has, just drop into your local airfield and ask nicely. I bought my seat cushions from Paolo as well for my 45 MB and I am truly impressed with the authenticity and look of them. Can’t wait to mount them and try em out! Definitely worth the 1200 for my better looking end lol.
Hi Mat I had a Willys that used to vapour lock in parades or traffic not much fun on 6 volts,a couple of tips carry a 2 litre pop bottle of water and pour it on the fuel line round the engine and on the pump and carb .Another is add a small amount of parrafin to your fuel to lower the octane ,its modern petrol that creates this problem hope this helps . @greendot this is not vapor lock this is your jmp fuel pump that is about to die ! ive had that with 3 of their pumps you must switch to another brand like seal tested or a good rebuild original pump !!
Another cool thing about the seats you bought - you are having the exact same experience driving the MB as did the GI's in WW2. That's gotta be worth $1200. How is the fuel economy with the Solex compared to the WO? My 'new' Solex gets way better mpg's than my friends with their Carters.
You are right Tom, the sprung ride is how its supposed to be and when I hear complaints about the jeep ride its not something I recognise because its pretty good if you use original jeep springs and original spring cushions, interesting to know because the ride on my GPW with repro springs and foam cushions was bloody awful!

I just purchased and installed the spring seats from Paolo. They are great. When you first sit on them you think these are harder then the foam BUT as you drive and hit a few bumps you realize that they take the harshness out of the bump. Thank you for your video it made go ahead and spend the money for the proper seats.
Thats great, they are much better than foam and look correct, I wouldn't now restore a jeep without a set
It's the disruption of proper air flow do to the lack of the windshield (screen) lol.
Might verify the fuel tank is venting properly also.
Pushing your luck there lol! The fuel tank is pretty air tight but I unscrewed the cap and didn't hear a hiss or anything first before I moved on to anything so I think its ok!
@@Greendot319 I have jeep with the Solex also. I get the same issue you encountered. Most noticeable after a tank fill. Thought it might suction feed issue. My Solex is slightly different to yours, in that it has a chamber vent pipe which protrudes at the top of the venturi, otherwise the same. Must check the fuel lines to see if they run along hot block somewhere. Hope you get to the bottom of this issue finally.
This vapor lock issue is happening everywhere to many with older cars with carburetors. It's the modern (Crap) Ethanol mixed fuel . Supposedly the boiling point of Ethanol fuel is far lower than None Ethanol fuel. I've also had the problem with my jeep for the last few years, it's been a head scratching journey.
The expense is worth it if you have gone through as much detail as you have done. You can help prevent heat soak with heat wrap. DEI makes a Velcro sleeve for lines and you can quickly remove it when you go to shows. It is only $26.00 american

I drove 1026km in two 12 hr runs. and Vapor lock happened about 10 times or so. Still have the Carter carb in it though.
Interesting discussion about the seats. I had never seen that about the springs before. Nobody makes accurate repro landrover seats, they only do foam filled which is right for later vehicles, but early ones were sprung and filled with horse hair. I'll try and track down some originals for my 1966.
That's too bad. There is really something to be said for the sprung ride, its very good, that's how they designed it!
@@Greendot319 I think the,thing is, few people in landrover circles would stump up what they would cost, so a cheaper alternative is always more viable. I do agree though, the sprung seats are definitely "proper".

we used to put about 5 or 6 spring type clothes pins on fuel lines from pump to carb ,sounds crazy but it works
Nick Hopper in the US and Amaury Vdyl in France both do sprung seats now - and GPW is different to Willys of course !

Hi! Do you know which seat is the most resilient, the open one from below or the closed one ? Late or early? Also are gpw springs feel stronger vs willys ones? Don’t know which to chose ( no importance for authenticity but only confort and durability ;)

It's a shame that the cushions from TLODL are not made with chevron style zippers. At least on the GPW ones anyway.
I know this was some time ago but I think the vapour lock is down to modern fuel. I think the E10 is even worse. I have a 65 Mustang and I ended up going for an electric pump back at the tank to push the fuel through but even with this the engine goes really lumpy idling if I am in traffic, like a queue on the M25, for any length of time. The fuel percolates in the carb. I know you are going for super authenticity so your options are a little limited.
As for repop parts I always go for the best I can get. Cheap parts will likely let you down or not last as long.

Hi Matt, fan of your videos I have a 1942 willys mb I am contemplating getting the seat cushions from Italy however the springs weren’t introduced until 43 I believe. so I would have to opt for the early style with the map zippers and horse hair do you think it’s still worth it ...? Best regards
There's a lot of unknowns about seat cushions ass very few survive, all I can say is I think they know more than me at The long olive drab line so I am happy with the cushions they have produced for my May 43 MB!
I'm building one of these in a scale model for our October show I have all the dust pigments n mud effects there I'll copy whare it's all collected over and around the engine bay!
I've copied your wire cutter on the model and bits and bobs including your antenna mount and away to make the canvas cover for the radio with the clear part my model will basically be your jeep as a scale model
Kinda same with us armour modellers, when you buy cheap ass kit's to build your only buying the problems that come with them money's no object when comes to my ww2 armour builds for the shows etc everything is accurate on them once finished it's videos like these I love and researching and learning about that certain vehicle your building eveing in scale models! Armour Modeling is getting even more popular we're part of an ipms model club but your jeep has certainly made it's way into my scale collection! One thing I'm away to build for it today is the flip up lamp brackets and black out canvas covers again all details from your real one!
Nice jeep. Built a complete 1943 GPW from 2 parts 1943 GPWs. Both had matching frame, engine and body. One was much better than the other having been kept inside but it still got a body off rebuild where the other had sat outside and rusted away for about 30 years. Should get your windshield on soon. A stone in the face really hurts like hell.

I find it interesting the comments that say to add the paraffin to the fuel. I’ve never heard that before. I’m assuming it is the same as what we would call kerosene here state side.

Just an observation, I’d take look at the intake valve may not be properly seating and combining with vaporisation causing air lock, happy jeeping. 👍
Hello always great information. I have recently purchased the foam filled seats for my 1945 MB. After using the correct filled seats do you still feel it was worth the extra $$$ ? I'm on the fence I could resell my foam filled to help offset the cost if you really feel the correct seats are more comfortable.
It all depends on if you think its worth it, If you are doing an authentic resto then they are a must if not then dont worry! There is a guy in America producing them now too so not just Italy

Yep Roger absolutely correct, this is an early clutch and does not have the anti rattle springs so if you hear that noise when you depress the clutch at higher revs its the normal clutch rattle for a jeep! Good spot

Great scenic drive. I understand you privacy is important. However, Id really like to know where you are driving.
I know from experience that there is i difference in the volatility of fuels. if you added fuel when the weather is colder it is way more volatile then fuel you get in warmer weather. Check with someone in the fuel distribution business to be sure in your area, educate yourself in that local area as different places treat this differently.. And as already stated in other posts, the fuel we get these days are a far cry from what was available at the time of manufacture of these machines...
That's an interesting idea Paul, I'm starting to move towards the idea of fuel problems rather than jeep problems but if it is a fuel problem then we need to learn how to sort it so we can continue using them as they should be used!
God post as usual Mr Dot. Bit spooky though , I went out this morning and conked out after about twelve miles , temp around 150 , can’t manually pump any fuel through. But how do you know the difference between a dodgy fuel pump and vapour lock ?

Easy Martin, crack the fuel line before the pump, can you draw fuel through? If yes its the pump, if no its the line! Also if the pump was working before and after the problem then its likely to be lock and not the pump.

Reminds me of the old Ford flathead V8's always vapor locking on a hot day. How did they keep them from doing that in the desert in WWII? Find something to act as a heatsink on the fuel lines and keep a large bottle of water handy to cool off the lines. Happy Easter.
I think the problem is if your fuel line is not angled right, it just gets too close to the engine and causes vapor lock, but like you say I think even with the fuel line in the right place it probably still got vapor lock in desert conditions. There is an idea out there that the fuels they used to use are less prone to vapor lock than modern fuel blends, perhaps that is the real difference!
@@Greendot319 An old Chevrolet mechanic in his 80s told me about wrapping small coil springs from screen house doors on the fuel lines to increase the surface area to enable more cooling.
There is also the dump some canteen water on the line trick.
How beneficial would it be to run ethanol free gas in these jeeps?

It's worth checking that the valves in the fuel pump are sealing correctly. Had an issue with vapour lock on a '64 land rover, tried insulting the lines, fuel additives etc. and it turned out to be due to the fuel pump valves not seating resulting in backflow and vapour forming on a hot day after shutoff.
And the solution to solve this when you're out is to 1) Let it sit until it cools, 2) Get a wet rag to cool the fuel lines, carb and pump
How did you insult the fuel lines? Call them junk? (Got to love typos that result when you miss a letter. lol)
Looks like a new fuel pump is in your future. The check valves might not be sealing.

No Robert, it shouldn't get locked so it must be something I can sort out without insulating it! There is an idea out there that modern fuel blends are more prone to vapor lock than WW2 blend so perhaps it is a problem now that wasn't a problem in WW2?
@@Greendot319 1000s of Jeepers using modern fuel would have the same issue, if so. I would bet on tank venting, or a lock. Did you have a near full tank on the Gorge run ?
