Joe Bataan is a national treasure. I cannot even begin to express how much of an influence this man was in my musical life. Or, how much he is connected to my childhood growing up in NYC.
I love Joe Bataan. Makes me smile listening to his music. I'm from bklyn and it takes me back to the fun times growing up with the block parties and everybody just being free and dancing in the streets.
Mate, I'm from Sheffield, UK via Brighton, Oxford and London I too have great memories of dancing to Joe Bataan tracks at beautiful parties when I was also young and free. I still do free at beautiful parties, but it's only ocassional now sadly - got to ration that shit now I'm in my mid-fifties! Thanks for the tunes Mr Bataan!
I danced to your music back then when I was cute & sexy. Now older I can still dance salsa. YESSSSSS. mY BONES ARE STILL STRONG & MY LEGS. KEEP IT UP JOE BATAAN. YOU STILL HAVE IT......
I'm from sanfrancisco and in the 79s and 80s I remember my mother jamming his music at bbq's parties ect shes gone now but hearing his music refreshes those happy childhood memories. Joe bataan gets down.
Saw the film two nights ago on America Reframed. Kudos to you for unearthing this gem of a genre that hasn't been given its proper due in music history. I became a fan of several artists in the past day.

@@marthatorres4387 I think his 'Boricua' stems from his identifying with the Puerto Rican culture and tradition. After all, he was raised in Spanish Harlem on East 103rd Street. No matter, actually, great performer and person.

Growing up in the streets of New York in the 50s and 60s, was in a gang, got involved into crime, got arrested etc. After he was released from prison, he changed his life around.

So underrated. But trust me Joe Bataan was that guy during those hot summer days of unrest NYC. giving people of color a New Wave of the Newyork..Rican sound. It was the late 60tys bad man.
in an interview he said he is an Afro-Filipino American who led a Puerto Rican street gang back in the day when he was young, and he is not even a boricua! LOL!
This is AMAZING I didn't know that Joe Bataan was 1/2 Filipino and 1/2 Afro-american I always thought he was Afro-Cuban . I was a young kid when his music was "popping". I too am half Filipino and half Kazakh-Mongol .
