**Don’t forget the 👍if you find this useful, cheers!** Now - droning is one of the most ancient musical techniques and there has been a resurgence of interest in drone music in recent years. In this spoken walkthrough, I look at some - just some, there are many more! - iOS / iPadOS apps that lend themselves well to making drone music. Some are FX apps, some are midi generators, some are instruments. Here, my host app is AUM, a perfect experimental playground for such things. Hi Gav, thanks for mention - small correction: Latch can not send midi clock out - it uses rather dirty clocks (one per group). Btw, I hope you enjoy custom scales - I added them especially to make you happy = thanks for your suggestion!
Ah, thank you for the correction! And thanks a lot too for the custom scale update. Now, fingers crossed for Ableton Link to take things to the next level!!!
Thanks a lot for this video, as I’m a fan of musicians like Atrium Carceri, Alphaxone etc… and drone music in general, your review of all these applications is very helpful ! Thank you so much again ❤
Fantastic! thank you for making this. I have a few of these apps already but unaware and overwhelmed by just how many are out there. I’ll be certainly checking these out. Cheers👍😎
Love this selection of apps. I’ve finally got enough rubs together to upgrade my 32gb iPad to a 2nd hand iPad Pro with much more storage. I use my iPad every day and the frustrating thing is not having enough space to run all the apps I have (which isn’t all that many) It would be great if apple had allowed the use of a 1tb flash drive to store and use apps from but alas not. I’m now trying to suss out the best model to get to allow for easy connectivity for input/output and midi. Can you please recommend one? As far as I can tell if I get one with the M1 chip that should be powerful enough but then there’s all the usb C and the adapters required etc. Your help would be much appreciated 😊 Cheers Gary
Hi! This would be a good question for the Audiobus Forum I think. I happy with a 5th gen M1. You could maybe look at a 3rd gen pro too. Won't be as future proof, but still a great machine that you should be able to pick up cheap now, good luck!
The first time I fell in love with drones was with Drone FX by Michael Gieson. A super nice droner with a beautiful UI, unfortunately without any connect, no IAA or Audiobus. Drone Lab is another really nice one which sadly also fails in this regard. But at least it offers real time audio capture including any changes during the performance. But as shown in your demo there’s really no lack of excellent alternatives. Great video Gavin, lots of inspiration…!
@@GavinskisTutorials Hmm...this is as so often a quite subjective and personal decision. Considering that this is 'only' about drones you have a lot of influence on the the parameters and resulting in a lot of output variations. In combination with the UI that may produce different results than those achieved in the conventional way. But for $3 you can't go wrong anyway.
My favourite thing for drone on iPad is setting up feedback structures within AUM, with a few effects in the loop and some kind of sound source to seed the thing…
Yeah! I made a video showing a feedback loop in aum using Wotja, can't remember whether I added any fx tho. I need to use those feedback loops in aum more!
Hi, can you please explain what you mean by 'this'? If you mean a basic tutorial on making drone music, I don't have that. If you mean a basic tutorial about the host app I am using, the main app that all these others are contained inside, I do have a video on that called 'Almost Everything You Need to Know About AUM'. Cheers!
the new Alchemy sampler its fenomenal to creating granual textures and drones .. way down the best granula synth ive tried so far over many other vst as well
Hey, haven‘t seen this for a while - great overview of the iOS drone-possibilities. I personally don’t make too much drones-music, but it can be relaxing to watch some videos about drones. It should give a drone-Album series, just called morning, work, night. All with different frequency spectrum. Just because drone sounds can really cut bread, if they‘re too sharp 😄
Texture, mood, atmosphere.. What’s not to like about drones? You came up with some great combos of apps here Gav.. so much to explore.. AUM is definitely the playground to start your journey.. It can be very minimalistic OR you can dive deep + involve more sound generators + manglers.. so many options.. amazing when you think about it.. Happy Drone Day!
I found this hole in a fenceline and I was feeling adventurous. I went inside and a few hundred metres in there was a tent with some chairs outside and a sleeping bag half sticking out. I feel like filming it and adding a drone soundtrack. Vosis pro seems to fit.

Yes, pretty good looper even if it has - or at least had - a lot5of problems running more than one instance simultaneously
