- The story of Frank Moore, who was lost on HMS Defence at the Battle of Jutland, on May 31st, 1916.
The “Heroism and Heartbreak” Project aims to rediscover and retell the stories of more than 260 Hartlepool sailors who lost their lives during the First World War - but we need your help. If you have a photograph, letter or diary from a Hartlepool family member who served in the Merchant Navy, Royal Navy or local Fishing Fleets during WW1 please contact us by e-mail: (infodesk@hartlepool.gov.uk), telephone: 01429 242909, or by calling in to Hartlepool Central Library.
All of these stories, together with more than 9,000 photographs and a great deal of other fascinating facts and information relating to the port town of Hartlepool, can be viewed free of charge on our website www.hhtandn.org
My grandads brother Joseph littlewood aged 21, stoker 1 was also on this ship and was 1 of the 900 souls lost at sea. My they rest in eternal peace and be forever remembered, I for one is thankful for what you did for your country and for our future.
One of my great uncles, Harry Packer, also lost his life when HMS Defence sank.
He was from North London.
Phillip John Norrish , known to his family as Johnny, also died on HMS Defence. He was born in Tenby in May 1892. Hs first job was as a boy, as a cleaner at Tenby railway station, but as soon as he could, on his 18th birthday in 1910, he signed up with the Royal Navy for a 12 year engagement. (His family had a history of seafaring, as his father John was a fisherman, originally from Brixham.) Johnny joined HMS Defence on September 2nd 1913, and on 1st October 1915 was promoted to leading seaman. By 1914 his sister and her family had moved to Tynemouth, in Northumberland, where his army brother in law James was sergeant over the guns at Tynemouth castle. Jonny visited them there just before leaving for Jutland, and his death so soon after came as a huge shock to the family. His parents in Tenby - and especially his mother - were devastated by his loss. She had already lost 3 of her 6 children in childhood, and that left only Johnny’s younger brother William (who was also in the navy, having joined up in 1912, and who was also at Jutland, on board HMS Collingwood), and his sister Rose left alive. His mother had a special necklace made, with Johnny’s photo in, and I was fortunate enough to inherit it from her. We went to see the monument commemorating him on Plymouth Hoe, and though it is over 100 years ago we have never forgotten Johnny. My little grandson ( Johnny’s great great great nephew ) told the story of Johnny to his Beaver group at the recent Remembrance Day. William never really recovered from the tragic loss of his brother either, emigrating to Canada after the war.
