Good video. I can definitely relate. My husband and I have done car repairs that we never could have done in the past but with UA-cam diy videos we have managed to save quite a bit of money.
I can relate to your frustration. I guess you have to look at it as "it could be worse" approach. It's not a structural problem, thank goodness. It's cosmetic. Just deal with it one flake at a time. Safe travels!!
I went back and watched a couple of your first vids in the flying days. "Your office" as you mentioned. My wife always uses the word journey, as life is a journey. You and your mrs have had so many with travels, and are lucky to have each other. We live in the country, fresh eggs for breakfast, and yes the house and property always needs work. At the end of the day, we can sit on our deck, having dinner outside, and watch a gorgeous sunset. Yes we maintain our vehicles, and are lucky to be able to do our own work, at least most chores. Thank you for sharing your adventures and journeys, i am always proud to say i was born and raised in Mt.
Appreciate the update - and the realities. Homes have expenses, even the best ones. But so disappointing to realize one’s bought into something that will require unreasonable levels of maintenance for a lifetime. I find myself in that same boat.
Homeownership repairs get harder to do as one ages and even worse when you get on a fixed income. I am an older single woman who does DYI by u tube videos. I have some funny stories to tell about some of those attempts. I have been in my home for 30 years. When younger , one does not think about being 68 and not being able to handle a 40’ ladder on slopes🤪 I am blessed to own a home which is paid off. I’m not complaining!
It's wonderful to own your home outright (as we do too) but as we get older the maintenance gets harder to do. We still do it all but I guess the complaints get louder with age, as does the creaking bones and aching muscles. Thanks for watching, we appreciate you Robin!
Boy do I relate. Five years ago I bought an older mobile home. Lots of defects that showed up after. I'm the meantime I have an infected foot I can't walk with and unhappy neighbors. Aging isn't any fun after age 70. Shame on the people who do this but they're everywhere. Lots of love to you both and hope to see you next Friday.
Presenting only two options when more exist can oversimplify complex issues, leading to convoluted reasoning as one tries to navigate the false choices.
When I was painting houses, I ran across this problem siding. The owner wanted me to paint it and warranty the work. I said no thanks. I feel for you. I enjoy your videos.
i have noticed among my friends and neighbors that they are more willing to throw money than their time at something and then when they are bored with time on their hands complain that they dont have the money to do anything.......
My cousin had painted aluminum siding, and the house went from white to silver. I agree about the over spray, so easy to take rag wet with solvent and wipe it clean, easier and more effective than you would think.
You can look up property and ownership in county records and any legal action. I am retired and disabled and keep my house up! There are programs for the elderly to help. You can contact the AG office for help. Get Linda a step ladder.
Looks great. Cant afford houses around here, I agree paint is fairly cheap not much anymore looks fresh ..couple of hours and back to traveling ..like...
Good informative video Rick...we had the same thing happen with vinyl siding, after about 4 years the vinyl would warp and Crack then break off in windy conditions. I would never ever recommend vinyl siding to anyone, it's junk!!!
We bought a house in Wisconsin they had a pool in the backyard and never completely drained! We were never told that when we bought, so the ground where the pool was always soggy. 🤔
30+ years ago, the EPA mandated a change in the primer formulation used in domestic auto production. Many makes, foreign and domestic, had plants here -- and they didn't do any long-term testing of the new product/methods. Turned out the adhesion between the primer coat and finish coats was poor, so many vehicles developed a familiar scabbed look. Fortunately a product was identified that could overcoat the original primer and allow flake-free top coats. As you point out, however, it was necessary to sandblast (with walnut shells) first. Before replacing the siding, I'd check with autobody experts on products and costs -- experience has a way of bringing down costs, if you can wait that long!
Gotta do what you can to make each and every dollar "Scream for mercy"! Those of us who can still do things for ourselves are very fortunate. So many of those skills are being lost these days. I like doing it as it gives me a legit reason to buy another tool! And we all know, he who dies with the most tools wins!!!! Thank you for sharing the fun.
It's metal siding so I'm assuming everything is sealed up and just cosmetic. Don't feel bad, we replaced out roof and aluminized our soffits in 2021 at a personal cost of $19k. Then last year a small hail storm came through and most people on our block got new roofs paid out in part by their insurance. We should've waited.
I have to say ..I haven't worked on my car in years. got a part time job working at name brand auto parts store (like it suites me}. ..I cannot believe how expensive everything automotive related is and it costs almost twice the price to by quality with a longer warranty when is this rise in cost of living going to stop!
You might try a HOT water power washer. If you have already painted, wait till next year. HOT WATER power washer then prime and paint. Talk to paint firm about primer.
Gosh, I really feel for you both. That becomes the never ending chore, it would tedious enough if you had to do a repaint every 3 or 4 years but an annual overhaul is ridiculous
I know how you feel! I worked with my dad before I left home, and we painted houses together. My youngest brother still does sheetrock and painting in TN. It's hard to see but at 4:52 till 4:54, something flies right above your head. Too fast for a plane. So, I would say it was an asteroid skipping off the atmosphere. It's easier to see on the tv than my computer. But you can still see it if you look hard enough. Don't work too hard. We're fixing to paint the inside of our house, then the trim outside. LOL
I saw the same white fuzzy dot in the video, fun to guess that was a UFO. But if you watch carefully at the end of the streak above the house, it crosses in between the house and the camera. I think that was a reflection in the lens - or a white bit of fluff from a plant.
I have no advice, but I do wonder if you could get it to bare metal and then paint it with a car paint ? Or trailer paint for metal. Or that white rubber roof paint like goes on a trailer roof ? I'm just thinking out loud. I know nothing about paints. Maybe new DIY siding. Little at a time. Its easier than painting. In my opinion.
Reminds me of the Swedish movie "My Life as A Dog". There is a man in the the village who is always repairing his roof. Thanks for the video, always fun to see you two no matter what you are up to.
This is a really great informational video especially about saving money improving and maintaining your home and vehicles so you can afford to go places, take care Rick and Linda have a Wonderful Weekend Thank You.🏡🚐🇺🇲
I remember that, quite the scandal it was. I guess the silver lining is though it may look like crap, it can actually last a long time - better than the vinyl that followed.

It’s definitely good for people if they can DIY ! Labor costs are really high . My tiny home has been paid off for decades. So , maintenance is a must ! Thanks for sharing Rick & Linda!😁👍
I know it would be a bit of work but you could put paint stripper on one side at a time. Wash the striper off with the power washer. The furniture restores use this method some.
no rick , do like my father did, sand down the siling rough, glued plywood onto the siding everywhere, then we installed the flex siding over that, flex siding is a teflon based siding thats prefect for all 4 seasons and it guaranteed for 50 yrs, or you strip the old siding off and chicken wire the outside to instal stucco outside,! the price better much the same ffor either way,?
Vinyl siding is very easy to do you could buy bumples of it instead of painting just put up new siding one section of house at a time from the corner to the chimney 1 year from the chimney to the other corner the next year for you know what it's done

For taking the overspray paint from the glass, get some of those plastic scrapers from the auto body shop. Use them to scrape the still soft paint from the glass about an hour or so after you spray. wipe the blade off with rags after each pass. if you nick the plastic edge, toss it and get a new one. If you can't scrape when it's fresh, scrape the next day with a steel razor blade scraper while it is not fully cured.
Vinyl siding comes with the color in bedded in the vinyl siding . I say never paint it cause it peels off and can buckle the siding . I have a business in that and soffit and gutter .
Homeownership and the maintenance that goes with it. Back in the 1960s my Dad sandblasted our house and took the paint completely off, I think it lasted another 25 years except for the wood windows that needed repainting every few years. Now all I need to worry about is my old van and a can of Rustoleum does it for me. 🤣
We are facing this very issue with our home exterior, but it is an old, sprayed stucco coat that is peeling in spots. Sandblast the whole house? No! Going to have to chase after it one side of the house at a time... we live to travel, and home base is sometimes just a base of operations... I understand your situation very well. Cheers! you two. Looking forward to Fall.
It's a good thing most of your house has a roof overhang. I persuaded customers to have us install an overhang on gable ends where the roof ended. During a remodel and getting the roof done, It really wasn't a huge deal to lay some flats from the first rafter inside over a notch in the end rafter and create an overhang gaining good weather protection for the side of the house. I assume you have the Louisiana Pacific siding. Yeah, that was a problem. Most of it is gone now. Too bad the previous owner took the money and ran. It really should have been disclosed on Form 17 I think it is around these parts. I recall that LP siding was a specifically asked question, (like if you had lead paint), printed on the form. Of course sellers can simply say choose not to disclose or don't know. You got the prep work right and you can go further giving the house a quick scrub of TSP using a car wash brush. On tough paint jobs. We'd get KILZ oil based int./ext. primer. KILZ has good adhesion and provides a good base for paint. I never cared for the sprayer. I used a 24" wide 3/4 knap Wooster roller out of a big Wooster paint pan. Best with two people but you load up a 5x5 area, then either you or your helper get up on a ladder or whatever and spread it out with your good quality 4" brush. Using a brush, in my opinion, created a better adhesion to the house because you are physically working the paint into the house surface instead of spraying over and covering with no physical action to the house. It goes darned near as fast as a sprayer without the mess. If you do spray, have your helper hold a big piece of cardboard or door skin wherever you want to prevent overspray. Would have worked great along the chimney, just hold over the brick against the house and no cleanup will be needed. I have a ton of projects to do here myself. I think next spring will be the time for this place. Anyway, the homestead is looking nice and peaceful, I'm sure just the way you like it. Take care.
Thanks for the tips. We're now considering removing the siding a section at a time. The original siding is still under there so we'll see what shape it's in. Next year.
@gonagain There was a time when salespeople for aluminum and other sidings would show up and convince homeowners their original, often nice cedar siding was bad, and they would cover it. We did removals a couple times and found really nice cedar under it that didn't need too many repairs. Another nice thing is that the old nicer window trim was still intact. Start in the back of the house and make your plan forward from there. The southern facing side usually has the most weathering.
Hey guys..that sucks for sure but that's life sometimes. I'm the same way..do as much of the maintenance on my vehicle as I can and take it to a shop for what i can't. I've saved more than I spend..so it all works out 😁👍
@@gonagain Yep..I was under the van checking the rear brakes and possible rear axle leak. Just jacking the van up.. removing the tire & brake drum was it for me. I'm taking it to a local guy who has a shop to have the rear (drum) brakes and axle seals replaced.. he's close enough I can put the Ebike in the van and ride it home. I did the front brakes & wheel bearings myself..which is quite the job with it being 4WD. Saved enuf on that job to afford having someone do this 😁👍 You guys take care !
Oh, what a bummer, to go through such headaches. Believe me I Know. When the bottom falls out we have no choice but to grab the bull by the horns and Fix it Up Straight Away. Easier said than done. Take it one day at a time & try not to stress. Rick, my phone not only got Hacked, but it broke last Saturday night which got me canceled for my back surgery for Monday. They got me into the main hospital instead of the private clinic, and as of Wednesday I've had my procedure. Now, I can't walk at all and am in Major Pain way above what I was dealing with. I trust I will heal soon. I haven't forgotten your question about the property search, so I will send an email and bring you up to speed. (and yes, I will send it off later today) Very Sorry about how things go Upside Down leaving us Tangeled in Red Tape. The broken phone decided to re-start, and after fooling around with the Sim Card I'm back in business providing this Piece of Junk doesn't drop out again. Amazing how our world goes into Total Melt Down when our phones don't work. I'm not complaining, I'm Explaining. Steadily Move Forward and May God Bless.
I seem to remember that's supposed to cover undisclosed issues, maybe this could be included. Most insurers I've dealt with deny all claims at first as a regular policy, after an appeal or 3, most have paid [ car, home, health, etc. Policies.]
Ah. The joy of home ownership! 😅 No matter our age, only can afford DIY rather than the pros. Good luck. It takes a team like you and Linda.
You and Linda can do it.
Buy a bundle of new siding and replace it a section at a time .
Siding is easy to do.
Maybe....

Check your email. Hope the pain eases up some for you.
How many years until all the flaked spots are fixed? Or let the whole house just flake and go bare! May be time to flip a coin.
Home maintenance… yuk lol ❤❤❤
Make a claim on the title insurance?
I seem to remember that's supposed to cover undisclosed issues, maybe this could be included. Most insurers I've dealt with deny all claims at first as a regular policy, after an appeal or 3, most have paid [ car, home, health, etc. Policies.]
Tell Linda to simply use a razor scraper after it dries. Tons easier.
