    I have never heard of this person before, but I love the way that they speak and choose their words. The conversation overall between Professor Tressie McMillan Cottom and Trevor Noah was great. They obviously have not only respect for each other but enjoy their conversation and each other's company. There's an actual conversation going on, and opinions being given in an open space for discussion. Like every other interview I've seen Trevor do, I've learned about a new amazing person, and their opinions and insights have broadened my world view. I would have never had the chance to learn about so many different people if it wasn't for Trevor bringing them on the show, and them being willing to come on. I really hope the Daily Show keeps doing this. I also really like what she said about learning and curiosity, and about Twitter and public squares overall.

      That Trevor is leaving this platform is our collective misfortune. Hopefully, the show will continue in this vein but no one can attract the same kind of interesting guests or, more importantly, will not be able to engage them like Trevor does. Truly a devastating loss.

I know there is a whole team of folks who won't be transitioning away and who have had a part in how profound Trevor's run at the healm has been. Professor Cottom is yet another extraordinary person interviewed excellently by Trevor Noah, among many who I either never hear or see on all the other comedy/news/culture shows, or hear from far too little. It's hard to miss that Trever has amplified a lot of Black voices in particular, which I really appreciate. Although no one can replace Trevor, I will be paying close attention to whether Comedy Central selects someone who might continue being this thoughtful as well as funny.

    These platforms are the modern day version of the public square. That's why eventually they will no longer be treated like private enterprise. Rather they will be treated as public utilities and people won't be able to get kicked off for "wrong think".

    • @AllAmericanJock
      @AllAmericanJock Рік тому

      They're not public squares. 99% of human beings do not use Twitter regularly. You extremely online people who wrongly think social media is a public square just need to go outside and interact with real people in the real world more often. So, no, you want get to take away someone's private platform and turn in public just because you spend too much time online to know the difference.

    Comedy central had better do a very special farewell for Trevor. The way he connects with everyone he chats to on the show is brilliant, and just the quality of questions is top notch. Can't wait to see how they bid him farewell, and what the surprises for the new show will be after he leaves, because they can only try to make it remain as interesting to watch or else it will lose a lot of viewership. Can't wait to see how much stuff Trevor will immerse himself into after the daily show, and path the Daily Show will take after he leaves.

    I completely disagree with her on why people do social media. I don't think it's curiosity, I think it's mostly wanting approval and consent from other people. I don't do social media cause i know it would be the end of me :-), but I do watch US news on UA-cam and sometimes I post my opinion and even I check back sometimes what people replied and if they liked my post. so I guess in a way i DO do social media :-). But in my opinion that's why people are so crazy about it, wanting to be seen.

    A government owned electronic square would have to have rules that would be determined by some governing body which by definition would eventually I have to limit speech in some way to maintain order. It sounds odd but the first amendment would not allow for a government-sponsored Twitter. When Twitter was publicly owned it had a form of accountability to the shareholder. Now that it's privately owned I do not know why the rules governing monopolies in the media do not apply.

    This whole debate of privately owned vs state owned completely missed the owned part: the public square can exist on its own in a decentralized architecture. And with all due respect, this imho is the reason the next public square will be designed by a techie, not a sociologist. But gotta admit that she would make a great librarian, as nothing inspires curiosity better than a personal example, of which she is the epitome.

    US shouldn't have anything to do with a potential public platform like that. Or any one nation for that matter. It would be too political and divisive, but UN on the other hand could be a great answer to this problem, which I believe should be like a global public square. Something that is hard attain when managed by cynical individuals looking at profit or elections.
