Wow! That is the kind of conditions I want when we do the C&D Canal and Delaware Bay!

That is the way to do the Delaware Bay! When I lived in Cape May years ago ('78 -'80), the Cape May canal railroad bridge was in operation, and there was a daily train to Philadelphia (one car!). Surprised the bridge is still there, unless there is a chance of restoring rail service. Fuel in the C&D canal (Schaefers' at Chesapeake City) is the most convenient on the entire east coast - open 24 hours a day, with a decent price. Did you fuel up there? Chesapeake City harbor is a pretty welcome spot for moderated draft boats like the A30 to drop the hook - you looked tired!

The bridge is open and honestly I’m not sure it could ever operate but it’s probably cheaper to just leave it than to tear it out.
I didn’t know they were open 24 hours that is a great tip!! We didn’t fuel up there, we got fuel in cape may (at not a great price I might add) we are always looking for other east options!

The AIS transmitter is often a separate device (and annoyingly always on even at a dock) than the VHF radio (yes, I know you know this).
I've called non-responding boats via DSC which causes their radio to beep loudly and they don't know what to do. Maybe we can practice this next summer!

From your GPS Chart Plotter, if AIS equipped, you can see the ship data which includes its MMSI number. You can enter this number into your VHF radio for a direct DSC Call. Once you call the ship using a DSC call, their radio emits a loud audible signal until they answer. Only the ship receive this call, no other ships around you. This way they can't tell they did not hear the call or misunderstood the voice call. Cheers

I’m curious how much this feature actually gets used. We know how to do it, but on our VHF it was such a pain we’ve never attempted it. And I mean in this scenario (and many others we’ve witnessed over the last year) the commercial vessel obviously had that information since two out of three vessels they were trying to hail were on AIS, but they attempted to hail over and over and over on 13 and 16. If the professionals aren’t using it in scenarios like this one, you know that the everyday boater probably isn’t. 🤷🏻‍♀️
If anyone else sees this comment…weigh in! Have you ever placed or received a DSC (digital selective calling) call??

@@AbroadReachTravel I use it quite a bit for calling my friends, their MMSI numbers is preconfigured in my radio. When I call them, it only rings on their boat, nobody else knows they are being called. On Lake Champlain, this is often used as channel 9 is somewhat busy... Cheers

Miss Chris Marina is/was $1.50ft but with no amenities and possibly cheaper fuel.
There is fuel at the end of Worton Creek 25 miles past Chesapeake City and is also a super snug anchorage past the 2nd set of docks. Land dog at 2nd set of docks at a dinghy float. Pay Pepper a small fee for showers and laundry.
