  • In this video I create an artistic vase that has been textured on the outside surface with a woodburning/pyrography pen. I did see a similar piece like this on Pinterest. So this is not my own original creation, but I thought it was very interesting looking so I just had to make my own version of it.

I like it! I think it needs some vibrant color. This type of project certainly takes patience.

Hi Frank, l know the wood turner who made the original. He is Tim Soutar from Victoria BC. I asked him about the piece and the story is when he was cutting the vertical lines with a trim router the bit can loose and cut all the way through so this resulted in a design opportunity.
Anyway you did a great job.

Thanks Harvey, its always great to know the original story on pieces, but funny to hear that it was not planned from the start. I guess that is how lots of new ideas and designs develop.

Nicely done, Frank. I've admired the same piece on Pintrest but not had the nerve to go further

I always use a Steady Rest when the Vase exstends more than 6 inches from the chuck.

That looks nice Frank, funny you mentioned Pinterest as i have a log sitting here and was browsing for ideas and came across your video. I'm getting some Mohawk NGR dyes this week, i might try something with them.

This is wonderful! It appears as though there is a stippled effect within the dark rectangles. Did you actually burn little dimples into the wood? It's a great effect! Very nice vase.

Thanks, yes I burned small dimples or round dots into the dark square areas of the piece. It took forever to do that, but yes, it gives it a nice tactile stippled feel.

I love the castle wall look on the top of the vase. Nice work. If you get a chance could you share a link to the steady rest you have, I could not see a link in the list above.

Thanks. I did have a link in the notes, but it is under a bunch of other Vicmarc products. So the steady rest is a Vicmarc product No. V01099 - Universal 3 point steady rest. In Canada, it was a special order that I purchased at branchestobowls.com/product/3-point-steady. In the US, I guess anyone who carries Vicmarc should be able to get it. I had other steady rests in the past, but I really like the simple setup and easy on-off style and it hardly interferes with with a laser if you use one when hollowing.
