materials:
strawberry
ziplock bag
two amall beakers
plastic funnel
one square of cheese cloth
tube rack
150ml plastic tube
5ml alcohol
pipette
one small tube with a cap/lid
20ml of extraction solution
1. Place strawberry in ziplock bag
You should wear gloves when you do this. If the strawberry DNA mixes with your DNA you will turn into a Strawberry Mutant - monster!
Carol Never Wore Her Safety Goggles. Now She Doesn’t Need Them
Thanks for the video has been made clear to me for doing my experience in the school lab
We have a new version of our strawberry DNA extraction video. Enjoy....ua-cam.com/video/usaE_XZx-a8/v-deo.html
is it just me, or does anyone else want to stick that under a scanning electron microscope
This works better if you use something a little finer than cheese cloth to filter. Also if you use a wooden coffee stir to collect the dna out of the solution it works much better to get a substance you can put on a microscope slide.
A few years ago, I went to my dad’s friends daughters science convention thing. There were so many experiments and I even got to do some. They gave me a necklace with dragonfruit DNA. It was beautiful, but it’s completely clear now. It used to be a beautiful purple. I also got to make slime 😍
Yes! We used a bunch of things! As long as it is alive or once was alive, or has DNA you can use it! We recently did it with a fingerling brook trout. It was pretty cool.
place funnel into 50ml tube
place cheese cloth in funnel
pour ziplock strawberry thing thru cloth into funnel
gently squeeze cheesecloth, once all liquid has passed thru throw cloth away and remove funnel
add 5ml of 70% icopropyl alcohol
hold tube to eyelevel and observe
dna precipitate looks like fine white strands of
Thnks
Bcoz u just boosted up my 💘 for genetics
COOL! I will try to do it! Thanks)))
FINALLY! I will be able to clone strawberries and create a theme park called, "Fruitassic Park!"
Any ideas on how to make fragments of the DNA at home for gel electrophoresis
I did this today in class except my class used the inside of our cheeks and swished salt water for 1 minute spit out into cup, added dish soap, stirred very gently with and extended paper clip for 10 sec., and waited 1 more minute. Added some rubbing alcohol by sucking it into a eyedropper and let it pour out slow and gently. Waited 5 minutes. took same paperclip and pulled out the DNA, which our teacher said, is supposed to look like clear snot.
This is okay for primary level. Fun experiment
I thought this was going to be easy!
How much would you need for just one person?
@minyingfeng Yes, I believe so. Kiwi's, Banana's, Strawberry's, and maybe lemons and oranges.
If you wanted to get a better separation of strawberry DNA, you would take the solution in a test-tube and centrifuge it. Very few labs have centrifuges, but if you have one handy, it's something cool to try.
+Neil Agarwal yeah, but my title 1 middle school won't have one of those. I do however have access to a dollar store. And i love showing my students my lab budgets. It doesn't have to be expensive to be science.
2:40 The eye level view of the strawberry DNA extraction
Mew mew gonna be trying this as a lab with high school students in a biology class.
We did this in glass, my partner dared me to take a sip of the solution at the end lmao
who's here because of a school lab
Why do we have to remove the air as much as possible?
I wonder how long the DNA will keep for
The video is beautiful, but I would like to explain why you used soap and salt, as well as alcohol. What is the reason?
everyday objects like beakers and pipets XDXDXDXD
does this method work on other fruits?
This lab does work, the soap breaks down the lipid bilayers in the cells.
if i am only doing this project by myself what would be the measurements for the extraction solution
At 1:06 they say "20 ml of extraction solution" is used.
The solution is 900 ml of water, 100 ml of shampoo and 2 tsp of salt.
so with 1000 ml of solution with 2tsp of disolved salt.
we'll just cut everything down by 50, so:
18 ml of water.
2ml of shampoo.
and 1/25th of a tsp of salt.
You're probably better off just doing it all, for your sanity, measuring out 1/25th of a tsp of salt will be fuuuun.
Why does alcohol have to be cold during this experiment?
2:33 that’s a dropper
I did with pumpkin. works
Why do we need to add alcohol? Whats the principal behind it?
N how to focus that under microscope?
I did this exact same experiment with banana :D
works with any fruit/berry/vegtable
theres a video on here using this EXACT method, and she extracted DNA
of her own blood ;0)
yess but strawberries are multicellular and octoploid, basically meaning one berry yields heaps of DNA for extraction
DNA extraction is a great tool for life many wonder full things to come
can it be 50% lsopropyl
SO in theory, if i do this to a human being, i can get meters of their dna goop?
I'm pretty sure he was just making a joke lol
Where doing this in science today and I get to keep the DNA .
what is the title of this song ?
Can you eat the DNA afterwards?
@EdgeRatedR007 lol!! I remember my bio teacher saying that with a smile. What a morbid man he was.
what type of cheese cloth is this?
this is cool
Just eat the strawberry-
Yeah so my class did this today but we wore our googles the whole time doing this and um this lady is not wearing her googles and she was holding the solution to her eyes so
this is my science project ;(
bien
Would anyone be able to help me? I was wondering if the amount of DNA that came out of that one strawberry would be considered a lot or not?
Hmmm... What does DNA taste like?
what is in the shampoo that is making this possible?
+heck naw just soap in general is needed. i use dollar store dish soap. Soap is a non-polar solvent that will destroy the lipid cell membranes of the nucleus and strawberry's cells. It won't harm the DNA.
you can olso ues dish soap and all it does is brake down the strawberry cells
what grade level is this?
You should've cut the stem off first because it could of cross contaminated
I was your 700th like!
We did this and made necklaces
DONT PUT ANYTHING IN THE BAG EXCEPT the strawberry
god do I hate online classes bro
7 years before Bill.
1:27 I can type!
i did this today in science. we got to keep the dna
why does the strawberry extract have to be filtered
+92superj mostly just pulls out the lumpy parts. But if you want me to be technical, in order to get to the DNA stings you have to lyse the cells and have the salt buffer excise the proteins that protect DNA.
The only everyday material is the strawberry
can we do this to people?
Yes. Although most don't have strawberries growing on them. But it can be done with any tissue really, including blood.
@thatAWES0MEdude I did this in 6th grade
I feel sorry for that strawberry
Am I the only one that didn't have these lying around my house or...
no
If we keep this under a microscope can we see DNA
You would have to zoom 600 times or more to see something dna'ish
@@macrobialgains actually you are able to see chromosomes under a 600x time zoom, I'm not sure about the oil thingy you are talking about
@@antonhounielsen2213 immersion oil is used for the 100x objective lens on a bright field microscope
triggers me when she says pi-pette it should be pip-ette (im jk)
oue et toi ?
@elanajoy86 It just seems to me after all my studies on what DNA actually is i sincerely doubt this is a successful method of extracting it, from anything.
Good but Fast...
Y
litty
SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO TAKE THE GREEN LEAF OFF FIRST AND SHE DIDNT GENTLY POUR THE LIQUID IN OMG THIS IS SO WRONG.
ha !
Lol I should take this DNA and pour inside this wound on my hand just for fun lol
Oh no! They killed Peter the Strawberry!!! Those bastards!
sava
Noocie
omg
I hate biology. My teacher assigns these lab assignments after experiments it's hard lol
Sub if ur from nwc
tfk
@Dinocrap1101 I did this in Bio this semester at my university, it's real.
"put a small amount of pressure on the strawberries"
*grabs hydraulic press*
finally someone from 2021 lol
2021? Y’all r old now
