I’m currently a college student and policies vary by professor. Some professors are more “strict” than others. I’ve never taken a course that didn’t have a final exam and but I did have to take an introduction to sociology course for my degree (in education) that was a waste of time. They talked about intersectionality, what they call 4th wave feminism, gender stuff, and a bunch of other left learning things. I don’t feel I need to be versed in political ideology to teach. That’s not something I’m going to “pass” onto my students. And the class was against my values. The professor didn’t seem to really like me and I was concerned about her grading me differently than the other students (I have a 4.0 gpa- so I’m a very dedicated learner and her class was my only B). It total waste of $, but I had to take it because it was a required course. We also had to learn about the “genderbread” person. If you don’t know what that is look it up and you’ll get an idea of what she was pushing.
I agree with the waste of $
I was actually respected for speaking against some of the ideas in my sociology class. When my professor brought up overpopulation, I said "if there are too many people, how many people should there be? Quantitative arguments need quantitative evidence." When he brought up the pay-gap, I said "women don't have the same number of years of continued service in the same fields as men because women have children and work part-time more often than men". I disagreed in a manner that was respectful and backed by evidence. He gave me an A. So maybe respectful, evidence-based disagreement is the only solution moving forward.

I used to ask my kids when they were in high school in the end of the 1900s...were they "striving to be mediocre?" now it's true
So have doctors been under this system as well? Show up for an "A"? If so we may be in heaps of trouble.

I graduated in 1996, and I remember how it all came together in my last year. I felt I had learned so much. Of course, I didn’t have any classes like Women’s Studies, no classes where I didn’t have to study for an A. So glad I was able to get a real education!
Thank you for this excellent analysis. Those who prefer quantity rather than quality of 'A' grades probably cannot understand the difference between them. Too much of a good thing can be bad, and American college students seem to be drowning themselves in excess self-importance and self-compassion. Someone needs to educate them about Malthus' and Darwin's evolutionary theories, else they won't survive the coming overpopulated decades.

What happens as standards are lowered for medical courses and engineering courses, including for bridges and airplanes?
Stories about colonizing and conquering wild tribes and other adventures are so much more exiting than learning about the colonized. It was them who were lagging behind. We want to be educated about conquerors, winners, Caesar, Napoleon. Don't need to hear about the leusers.
