Great analysis Kevin! The best time to get into an IPO is to wait for it to move 20-30% at first and then revert back close to the IPO price. That's the best and safest time to jump in. Classic examples recently are Zoom, BIGC and Fastly. They shot up right after IPO and eventually came down. Anyone who got in after coming down are sitting on massive gains. Example: Zoom IPO'd at $65 and shot up to $107 in a very short time. Then they came down to $62 in 2-3 weeks. That's when I started piling in and ended up with an average cost of $69.99 after buying more once it started picking up. Fastly shot up to $33-$34 in a few months after IPOing at $16. Waited to get back in at $18.34 once they cooled back down and look at where they are now. Investing in good IPO stocks are easy ways to make huge profits.
@@Penelope416 You're welcome! Another point to note is that if a stock drops right after IPO, then wait for a good turn around if you still believe in that company. Examples are UBER and SNAP. Neither got back to IPO levels but if you got into UBER between $25-$30 or SNAP under $15, then those are much more reasonable valuations to base your investments on. Cloudfare (NET) and Cerence (CRNC) are 2 other good companies that dropped a little after IPO but shot back up 2-3X since then.
I'm a health outcomes researcher for a healthcare company, and I can say that snowflake is a life saver. There are many benefits that just make it great. First, if I'm working with a vendor or another company that doesn't have the same cloud service as us (AWS, Azure, etc.), then we have to download it off their server and then upload it onto our server and encrypt it. That sometimes takes days to do. With snowflake, it just transfers over in a few hours. Second, it uses SQL and integrates well with a bunch of other languages for it to analyze. It is user friendly and about just as good as oracle's SQL at merging/cutting data. You pay $1/hour per analysis. It has basic machine learning algorithms, basic/advanced statistic packages, and data visualizations built into it. So, a company will not need to buy softwares. We need to buy certain softwares for regulatory purposes. Third, I see this as the future for dataset sharing. I deal with multiple healthcare datasets that are linked and are a pain to get from the multiple companies that own them. They give us the license. We have to download them and encrypt them. If these vendors put it on the snowflake cloud, it'll be very simple to download them onto our cloud, and they'll probably be linked all together. That'll save us the trouble of having to do that ourselves. It can sometimes take a day or two to just merge and clean multiple datasets. Lastly,and most importantly in my opinion, it gets rid of data silos. Sometimes, I work with the marketing team and they have their own data. Sometimes we need that data to run our analyses. It's so easy with snowflake to just take the dataset and merge it with ours. The cloud from each of the departments in our company may not be linked to each other. So, we'll have to download them onto another cloud/server and copy over to ours. It's such a hassle and costs a lot of money for equipment and labor. If I had to estimate, it would probably cost 6 figures. With snowflake of it ran for 3 days (72 hours), it would only cost us $72. Think of it this way, each department in their company needs their own cloud for security purposes. Each department has their own passwords, but they don't link with each other. So, we take the data off the cloud and put it on a 2nd hand storage space and then transfer it over to another cloud within the company. The company doesn't have time for that; so we just hire a vendor/consulting company to do it. They charge us a lot of $$$$. This shouldn't be an issue, but it's a big problem in give research companies. Sharing data within companies is difficult, but imagine trying to share data between companies. It's a pain, a waste of time, and a waste of money. In the S-1 document, they do mention that Amazon, Microsoft, etc could create this software, but it's been 8 years. I can see it happening maybe a decade or two, but I highly doubt it. It's not going to increase the users for the cloud companies. It's also going to decrease their margins by a significant amount. Amazon and Microsoft would have to create an entire division and put lots of $$$ for something to increase their users by a few percentage points, but decrease their margins by a lot. It makes no sense. These companies margins are ridiculously high for cloud. It doesn't require much maintenance of not zero. Adding something like snowflake would require a lot of people to maintain it. They're just essentially renting storage to the companies. And their "homes" only cost a couple thousand dollars to add storage every year.
Amazon and Microsoft both have various data analytics and big data tools. PowerBi. But you are correct they are never going to get it right the way a snowflake might.

Everyday I have a conversation about Snowflake in some form with different customers. Like Kevin said, companies use it to build on top of their cloud platform: GCP, AWS, Azure. Trying to explain is difficult but let’s see if I can break this down into business terms. They don’t just collect data and aggregate it, they store it for you, allow for better security (federated authentication), allow for a fail-safe in case their is a data server that goes down and wipes your company’s data, it also acts on top of Microsoft SQL’s as a SQL data warehouse. Snowflake runs on a consumption model. Meaning the more a company utilizes it’s cloud storage service, the more it grows in revenue. As companies move to the cloud and off of the on-premise model (where they maintain their own data servers and have their own private IT staff), Snowflake will be vital for this. Trying to explain can get complicated so this might not make sense. But I see it in this way: -They will have growth as a leader in the market for data-warehousing and as more companies jump to the Cloud. -They have a consumption based model and as fortune 500’s grow and small start-ups that use their service, their revenue projection will grow. -They can capitalize on all three main Cloud Platform’s and dip into multiple different areas of Market Share, making it accessible and easy for integration.

There is a 0% chance Warren was the person at Berkshire who bought Snowflake. I work in data warehousing and Snowflake pitched their product to our company.. not very impressive compared to traditional data warehousing products. It is also very expensive.

we've tried snowflake and the system they have is quite flakey. our client actually moved on to AWS and was very happy when they did. The other problem is unlike other startups, Snowflake has a lot of competition that is already existing and that's why they need to spend more on marketing. Also, exponential growth is almost impossible in the long run with established competitors.
Snowflake is going to be a huge company. My company was an early adopter of snowflake and it really took us to the next level in solving some big data problems. Its just crazy how much I have been hearing about it leading up to the IPO ... I expect this to pop big time... I really want to buy in but I think this could get ugly early with all the hype.

Am I the only one who follows Kevin's portfolio? I run a profitable startup called Evonify and I have no time to analyze financial statements and figure out if a company is good or not because I'd rather focus on my own business and program all day. Lately, I decided to buy everything Kevin buys and It's been a blast. I mean this Kid spends hours reading every day and investigating companies. You gotta study if you want to make it as an investor or trader. Tesla, Snowflake, Workhorse are all great companies but do not take my word for it. Do your research. I work in data and analytics for a venture backed tech company. We use redshift on AWS because we have to keep our data inside AWS, but Snowflake probably would have been my choice if I had the option. For small customers, a Snowflake contract probably starts at $50k/year. A public company you may compare it to is DOMO. Snowflake is pretty highly regarded as a great product, but there could be competition from Google in the future. However, the switching cost would be pretty high for companies using Snowflake, so I doubt there will be much revenue lost from their existing customers. I’ll be buying a bit, but not right away. I anticipate the typical post-IPO dip. Great video as always Kevin!
I don't love the methodology used here to determine the value of Snowflake. Using multiples is more the icing on the cake, than entirety of a FV calculation. I would do a DCF model for the years of extreme growth then use a terminal value to as a better way to value to company. Still, this video is a good starting point.
How would you go about buying this? Is it possible to set a limit order the day before? How would you if there’s no ticker symbol available until the day of… Do you just have to jump in first thing in the morning?
I will, considering it, at worst, to be a short-term, speculative stock. At best, another Zoom. My strategy will be to make some cash early on, then invest long-term using "house money" in the stock market casino.

Great analysis Kevin! The best time to get into an IPO is to wait for it to move 20-30% at first and then revert back close to the IPO price. That's the best and safest time to jump in. Classic examples recently are Zoom, BIGC and Fastly. They shot up right after IPO and eventually came down. Anyone who got in after coming down are sitting on massive gains.
Example: Zoom IPO'd at $65 and shot up to $107 in a very short time. Then they came down to $62 in 2-3 weeks. That's when I started piling in and ended up with an average cost of $69.99 after buying more once it started picking up. Fastly shot up to $33-$34 in a few months after IPOing at $16. Waited to get back in at $18.34 once they cooled back down and look at where they are now. Investing in good IPO stocks are easy ways to make huge profits.

@@Penelope416 You're welcome! Another point to note is that if a stock drops right after IPO, then wait for a good turn around if you still believe in that company. Examples are UBER and SNAP. Neither got back to IPO levels but if you got into UBER between $25-$30 or SNAP under $15, then those are much more reasonable valuations to base your investments on.
Cloudfare (NET) and Cerence (CRNC) are 2 other good companies that dropped a little after IPO but shot back up 2-3X since then.

I'm a health outcomes researcher for a healthcare company, and I can say that snowflake is a life saver. There are many benefits that just make it great. First, if I'm working with a vendor or another company that doesn't have the same cloud service as us (AWS, Azure, etc.), then we have to download it off their server and then upload it onto our server and encrypt it. That sometimes takes days to do. With snowflake, it just transfers over in a few hours.
Second, it uses SQL and integrates well with a bunch of other languages for it to analyze. It is user friendly and about just as good as oracle's SQL at merging/cutting data. You pay $1/hour per analysis. It has basic machine learning algorithms, basic/advanced statistic packages, and data visualizations built into it. So, a company will not need to buy softwares. We need to buy certain softwares for regulatory purposes.
Third, I see this as the future for dataset sharing. I deal with multiple healthcare datasets that are linked and are a pain to get from the multiple companies that own them. They give us the license. We have to download them and encrypt them. If these vendors put it on the snowflake cloud, it'll be very simple to download them onto our cloud, and they'll probably be linked all together. That'll save us the trouble of having to do that ourselves. It can sometimes take a day or two to just merge and clean multiple datasets.
Lastly,and most importantly in my opinion, it gets rid of data silos. Sometimes, I work with the marketing team and they have their own data. Sometimes we need that data to run our analyses. It's so easy with snowflake to just take the dataset and merge it with ours. The cloud from each of the departments in our company may not be linked to each other. So, we'll have to download them onto another cloud/server and copy over to ours. It's such a hassle and costs a lot of money for equipment and labor. If I had to estimate, it would probably cost 6 figures. With snowflake of it ran for 3 days (72 hours), it would only cost us $72. Think of it this way, each department in their company needs their own cloud for security purposes. Each department has their own passwords, but they don't link with each other. So, we take the data off the cloud and put it on a 2nd hand storage space and then transfer it over to another cloud within the company. The company doesn't have time for that; so we just hire a vendor/consulting company to do it. They charge us a lot of $$$$. This shouldn't be an issue, but it's a big problem in give research companies. Sharing data within companies is difficult, but imagine trying to share data between companies. It's a pain, a waste of time, and a waste of money.
In the S-1 document, they do mention that Amazon, Microsoft, etc could create this software, but it's been 8 years. I can see it happening maybe a decade or two, but I highly doubt it. It's not going to increase the users for the cloud companies. It's also going to decrease their margins by a significant amount. Amazon and Microsoft would have to create an entire division and put lots of $$$ for something to increase their users by a few percentage points, but decrease their margins by a lot. It makes no sense. These companies margins are ridiculously high for cloud. It doesn't require much maintenance of not zero. Adding something like snowflake would require a lot of people to maintain it. They're just essentially renting storage to the companies. And their "homes" only cost a couple thousand dollars to add storage every year.

Everyday I have a conversation about Snowflake in some form with different customers. Like Kevin said, companies use it to build on top of their cloud platform: GCP, AWS, Azure.
Trying to explain is difficult but let’s see if I can break this down into business terms.
They don’t just collect data and aggregate it, they store it for you, allow for better security (federated authentication), allow for a fail-safe in case their is a data server that goes down and wipes your company’s data, it also acts on top of Microsoft SQL’s as a SQL data warehouse.
Snowflake runs on a consumption model. Meaning the more a company utilizes it’s cloud storage service, the more it grows in revenue. As companies move to the cloud and off of the on-premise model (where they maintain their own data servers and have their own private IT staff), Snowflake will be vital for this.
Trying to explain can get complicated so this might not make sense.
But I see it in this way:
-They will have growth as a leader in the market for data-warehousing and as more companies jump to the Cloud.
-They have a consumption based model and as fortune 500’s grow and small start-ups that use their service, their revenue projection will grow.
-They can capitalize on all three main Cloud Platform’s and dip into multiple different areas of Market Share, making it accessible and easy for integration.

we've tried snowflake and the system they have is quite flakey. our client actually moved on to AWS and was very happy when they did. The other problem is unlike other startups, Snowflake has a lot of competition that is already existing and that's why they need to spend more on marketing. The best way to think about what Snowflake is and what is does in my opinion is this, taking the YT algorithm for example.
YT does MANY functions with pulling data from different resources to render its analytics to the users. Snowflake is like putting a super charger on that processes thus making that overall algorithm more efficient, thus improving the avg revenue per user.

I work in data and analytics for a venture backed tech company. We use redshift on AWS because we have to keep our data inside AWS, but Snowflake probably would have been my choice if I had the option. For small customers, a Snowflake contract probably starts at $50k/year. A public company you may compare it to is DOMO.
Snowflake is pretty highly regarded as a great product, but there could be competition from Google in the future. However, the switching cost would be pretty high for companies using Snowflake, so I doubt there will be much revenue lost from their existing customers.

I don't love the methodology used here to determine the value of Snowflake. Using multiples is more the icing on the cake, than entirety of a FV calculation. I would do a DCF model for the years of extreme growth then use a terminal value to as a better way to value to company. Still, this video is a good starting point.
