@billsbayou I just discovered your channel and binged pretty much every video. I was born + raised in NOLA but currently living out of town. I miss our little slice of heaven dearly. Watching your channel is hugely rewarding for this nostalgic NOLA girl. Please do an update soon--I'm dying to hear how The Saint Kateri Tree is doing and how this update to Heartbreaker turned out! Glad to hear some thoughts/science behind submerging bc. A little tired of the uneducated back and forth, when clearly both methods grow a healthy tree. One more tool in my toolbox, thanks Bill
Thanks for saying so. Submerging a bald cypress is something that many people just don't understand. Well, I'm to the point where I'm seeing the science. When the tree is submerged, the tree produces ethylene. Ethylene is a plant hormone, and among other things, it is a trigger for schizogenisis in the roots (the formation of air pathways) so oxygen can be transported rather than respirated. My brain is going to turn to mush.
Firstly, thanks a ton for doing what you do insofar as sharing it how you do, these vids are invaluable!!! BEAUTIFUL tree, obviously, gotta say I'm surprised at its age (it's a great tree that you've done very well with, but it almost reinforces my worries on "BC's just never develop 'fully'", yours is developed but for (18 I think you said?) years I guess I would've expected it to be far-into refinement, this is in-refinement to a large degree obviously however it's still getting 'big work' instead of just shaping which makes me wonder about whether maybe that's just the case with BC's, maybe they grow so fast that 'in refinement' still equals 'must remove sacrificial limbs here & there every spring.' And ROFL at the very beginning re annealed wire, you couldn't be more right I don't know how to describe it but there's definitely a weird but present beauty to annealed copper (for me, especially, when it's home-annealed or just doesn't look 'off the shelf'!) Thanks a ton for your videos, cannot explain how much value I've gotten from watching/re-watching all of them, can't wait for "the season to begin" (very soon! Heck now would work but no point dealing w/ supple new shoots in Jan!) Keep up the excellent work, **please**, you are one of the only couple people **globally** putting out such great BC content Bill!!! EDIT: in the 2/2 vid (looks like it's merging comments from the two, or I'm a moron, equally possible!), you show a 10-yr-younger tree at 16:02 that's got me thinking what I'd mentioned earlier re growth-over-time, *but* if that one is 10yrs old it makes me wonder why the top leader isn't chunkier? If you read & reply to comments I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, I'm new enough to Cypresses that, to me, I look outside and see some of my 1-year-old BC's with leaders that are about that thick from 1 season of growth, it's almost as-if you don't grow in full sun or something (I realize this could be taken the wrong way and want to stress it shouldn't be, I idolize your work and how you present it, in 20yrs I hope to be somewhere near where you are in this art!!!)
Hi Bill, if I can bother you with a quick question, I have been a subscriber and a long time fan. I have a Bald Cypress that I have repotted last spring, and now have a lot of growth and foliage. I live here in the eastern part of Los Angeles, zone 9b, when do you think I can prune it to shape? Right now we still have a nice weather, 75 to 80 F during the day and 50F during the night, I think it will still be like that for a Month and a half, and then eventually go down to 40’s to lower by December. I know you are the expert with bald cypress, thank you Mel
Do you know of any guides to create a formal upright bc from a stump? I have a bc stump recently collected thats abt 8in across at base and 36 in tall collected from a 20ft tree. I am debating which style (flattop/upright), and looking for some guides. Also, im a Nola resident. Tree was gathered in Hammond.
