How amazing that brand new steam locomotive boilers are now being manufactured in the US. It's about time we caught up with the UK in that respect, but better late than never!

Absolutely amazing! Kudos to MCRHS for such a quality ,"in depth" restoration. Though I have to ask, how much does a new boiler for a 4-6-0 go for these days?

what will happen to the old boiler?

The old boiler has been recycled. The idea of turning it into a display was considered, but decided against because its value as a display would have been limited. The tubes had reached the end of their useful life and were removed and recycled years ago (some of the tubes now form the railing around our passenger platform and flower garden). Other key components like the superheater, branchpipes, throttle, etc., are all being installed in the new boiler. With all that removed, all that was really left of the old boiler was the outer shell.

Thanks for commenting. We too are excited for the locomotive's return to service. Due to the large number of variables at play when it comes to funding and performing the repairs, as well as the subsequent testing and adjustments that may be needed before it pulls its first passenger train, it is extremely difficult to provide a completion date estimate with any real accuracy. Since we do not wish to mislead anyone, even if accidently, our policy has been to not give out estimates and predictions for the locomotive's completion. You can, however, follow along with the project's progress on our museum website's Steam Status page.
