🚩 MY 5 RED FLAGS OF SHIH TZUS:
#1. They are smooshed faced dog breeds. This means they cant breathe as well as other dog breeds.
#2. They have bulging eyes due to a shallow skull and shallow eye sockets. This literally means their eyes can pop out!
#3. They can have bad skin allergies and ear infections compared to other small dog breeds, which gets costly.
#4. When they get older their eyes get diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, and corneal ulcers. Which are frustrating to treat.
#5. They are prone to, hormonal diseases when they get older.

I have a shih tzu (rescue) & I completely agree with everything you said. We paid $150 to adopt him & in 4 yrs we have spent about $15,000 in vet bills! He has a dermatologist, eye specialist & a cardiologist (heart murmur) to deal with all his health issues. You forgot to list back issues, they’re prone to slipped discs as well. Louis fell off a bench & herniated a disc, that was another $4,000 in ER vet bills-thankfully we avoided surgery. Another big cost Is grooming, I don’t think people factor in that cost on average is about $100 a month. I love my Louis & I’m so thankful I can afford his care, but I would never recommend this breed for a first time pet owner.
Super helpful! Thanks
I have a shitzu and I clean his eyes every single day maybe even twice a day. I had to train my dog to make his eye cleaning easier.
My friend's Shih Tzu is has some very strong opinions about Israel. Is that a) typical for Shih Tzus? and b) a red flag? Please reply, Doctor Lindsay.
