Roberto went on to be the only horse to beat Brigadier Gerard and Rheingold went on to win the Arc the following year beating the great Allez France. Two great horses
Lester made the difference there s no doubt , the rules were different in those days let s not forget in olden days they used to use spurs , things have changed for the better.
Roberto was ok here, but at York he was magnificent. The ultimate legend killer. 18 lengths to the 3rd that day. Beating The Brigadier in a track record
@terryeggett1 while I agree with you about the whip only the incomparable maestro then at his peak could have bullied Roberto over the line in this race. He literally never looks like getting up but does. Having made as ass of nijinski in the Arc the previous year Lester was not for losing.
Most of what you say is true and accurate. I would take a slight issue with you on your take with nijinski. Lester was partly to blame for the colt's defeat although he was trying to conserve the colt's energy The main reason for his defeat was he was not himself that day. He had not fully recovered from the bout of ringworm and the Ledger. Lester cracked him with the whip for the first time since the derby and the colt swerved to the left and Sassafras edged past. His "A" game was missing.
I have to agree with RJ...let's not forget that Nijinsky was in front in the Arc with 100 yards to go...if he had met Sassafras in July, it would have been no contest...he simply wasn't the same horse but Lester did disobey MV O'Brien's instructions about how to ride Longchamp...there again, MV would only have run him in one race of the St Leger or Arc, but the owner insisted on both...and finally, it was 2 years previous to Roberto and not one...
JakeWalshMusic absolutely right about sassafras as earlier that year sassafras was well beaten by stintino in the prix lupin a horse that Nijinsky had easily beaten in the Derby..
@@1964karlos Yes, I read an interview a few years ago with Francois Mathet's head lad who led up Sassafras that day and even he thought it was a travesty that their horse beat Nijinsky...
if memory serves me correct they wanted a prep race before the Arc and the St Leger was the race. Personally if i had a horse that had 2 legs of the triple crown i would run him/her in the Leger and depending on the outcome would either run in the Arc or leave it to the next year. Nashwan was one horse who could have gone down in greatness if he had run in the Leger and won but instead he lost the Arc - to me Nijinsky and Oh So Sharp or heroes not Nashwan unfortunately which is a shame. At least Camelot went for it despite a bad ride and a drugged up winner I admire Coolmore for going for it.
Lester is one of my heroes, however his use of the whip in the last few strides to gain victory was unacceptable. I prefer to remember him for his tactical brilliance in the saddle and not for rides like this.
@@daveyeddie8176 Piggott always said Roberto wouldnt do jack shit for him, but would run for quieter jockeys like Beaza & Williamson, he had to make him do his work. His subsequent defeat of BG at York illustrated he was up there with the very best of OBriens on ability when he wanted to do it imo
@@quick46 No Doubt, Roberto was top class, Rhiengold was also, I just thought up the hill at Epsom the horse needed a couple of cracks. Lester was always the top jockey imo, had that extra bit of magic.
The incomparable Maestro at his best.

Did Roberto become a villain because he defeated Brigadier Gerrard?
Arguably the best 10 furlong performance in History. Even peak Frankel is going down that day
I agree Roberto might have run to 150+ v BG.
Maybe the greatest ever performance on the track,.
Wow Lesters FINEST HOUR and Superb Flawless Commentary from the IMPERIOUS Peter O'Sullivan !

one of the best races of the 20th century.

Roberto became a Great Sire, also...

You will never ever see a classic decided more by the actions of the jockey, this was unreal

Piggot struck Roberto 13times in 11 strides ! He literally knocked the horse over the line ! Never mind 'unacceptable' it was criminal !
I agree.
