  • Today I'm comparing the "look" of the Nikon D700 and D780 images side by side. How does a 12 year old camera compare to a very recent camera. Does the Nikon D700 really have a "Lieca" look and is it a ysseable camera in 2021?

Hi Allen. Interesting video. I recently picked up a D700 as a cheap backup to my D750 and noticed the same issue with the D700 consistently producing brighter images. Image quality was also a very pleasant surprise with “only” 12mp vs 24mp

I would LOVE a comparison like this between the D700 and the D3.

Hi I don't have a D3 so can't do that. I'm told the sensor of the D3 is Not the same as the D700 and doesn't give the same look.

I have the D700 and D850, I only use the D850 when I need a lot of definition, the color rendering of the D700 is unique.

How does the D700 compare to the D3? I know they have the same sensor, but I believe the colour rendering is slightly different.

Another thought... my latest Nikons always produce a "darker" raw file, but the JPG is a third stop brighter (even if I don't adjust image control to make jpg brighter). They are probably protecting the highlights and increasing dynamic range. These cameras are really imaging computers, unlike older film cameras, which are exposure mechanisms. The further we go, the more likely are they to assume more and more control over the imaging process. Look at Fujis... It can be argued that they are as much editing software as a "camera". They have the development engine built into the cameras. So much so, that if you use their Editing software, you need to connect the camera to the computer.

I used to own a D700 and I'm looking to get another. They do have a 'look', like shooting Velvia on 35mm film. I never used AF lenses last time and I don't plan to in future, I'd rather focus manually. I own a Leica M-240. It will be interesting to compare and contrast.

The Leica guy mentioned must be Thorsten von Overgaard, with the UA-cam channel "Magic of Light". Danish, not Swedish by the way.

Allen, there is a setting in recent Nikon cameras, including the D780, called "Fine-Tune Optimal Exposure" that will solve your problem in-camera. It is in Menu, Custom Settings, b:5. You can adjust the exposure *for each metering method* as a permanent setting in-camera. The adjustment will NOT show up as +/-EV in the viewfinder. No need to mess with post processing unless it's a special case. Nice video! 👍👍👍

Hi Glenn - thanks and that's exactly what I've done (is mentioned at the end) Just that I've never had to do it before. I suspect it's an attempt to capitalise on Nikons ability to recover shadows way better than highlights. Thanks Allen

I had (now sold) a D7500 and it use to underexpose about 2/3 - 1 stop on 90% of my shots. I compared it to my D300S, D700 and D610 and the 7500 was not correct.
Some say they designed it that way to hold the highlights and not clip and you have plenty of room to lift the shadows , but I was fed up with constantly dealing exposure comp. maybe this is with all the new Nikon?

Hi Allen, the video you uploaded here is very grainy, it is hard to distinguish the fine details, even though it says 1080p. No idea why that is.

Nikon’s proprietary software Capture NX is much better at preserving the colors of NEF files. Lightroom just butchers the colors in my opinion.

Hi, Adobe's own Camera Raw profiles might interfere, when Lightroom loads different ‘neutral’ profiles for D700 and D780 pictures. It may be worth to test any other raw converter or Nikons own software?
I got weird differences for the D780 vs Nikon Df, using Rawtherapee (or GIMP), when sideloading Adobe’s Camera Raw profiles, Standard/Neutral/Vivid whatever.

I have tried the same thing with Luminar, ON 1 Photo RAW and Darktable.
Nowhere the other Nikon cameras RAW (tried also with my D750 and D800E) can come close to the D700 colors.

@@seanfshannon Hi Sean. The D3 has colours very similar to the D700. To use a cliche, they are more film like. In other words, not as true to life. That being said, I enjoy using the D3 the most. For critical work though the D750 and D810 are best because colours are more accurate.

I would only be slightly concerned if only shooting jpegs. In RAW, the pictures are going to look different because todays Lightroom is interpreting the RAW files from the year 2008. In ten years those files from the D700 will be interpreted differently by Lightroom. I occasionally shoot with a Nikon D3, the files today look much different than when the camera was new. I like the look of the D3 files today more than in the past,

With every jump in resolution on newer sensors, the colour filters are further weakened.
Nikon altered CFA filters in order to boost high ISO performance and fit a bigger number of mpx in the same size sensor. But this required making the filter weak and less discriminating.
Weak filters have more overlap between the R, G, and B channels which allows more light through to the sensor. This helps support the greater pixel density of high-resolution sensors and their improved high-ISO performance but degrades the ability of these sensors to detect subtle tonal shifts.
The colours and hues that are lost because of never being captured in the first place can never be recovered nor "cooked"
no matter the editing software we use.No matter anything..

    d700 1/800, d780 1/1250 that's the reason why, d780 look underexposed.

Could be that you were using two different lenses? An early AF 50mm 1.8 on the d700 and on the d780 the newer afs 50mm 1.8g?

I have a number of D-series lenses and a 50mm 1.8G. The G lens definitely lets in less light compared to my 85mm 1.8D by about ⅔ of a stop.

He used the 50mm 1.8g swapped between both cameras for the test. Like he stated in the beginning. He only had the 50mm 1.8d lens on the d700 at the very end. So the test is valid. Maybe rewatch and pay more attention..

It's a way to cheat the ISO and "improve" performance at higher ISO's... from what I understand, many companies do that now. Older Nikons don't.
