Simple yet very effective sump filters. A great example of how fun this hobby can be. Much thanks and Happy Thanksgiving 😎
Happy Thanksgiving buddy!
Nice. Simple and easy. I'm going to look into building a 55 gallon sump similar for my 125 gallon.
Mines been doing a great job for about a year now😀👍🏻
@@BenOchart probably really easy to clean. I'm sick of dealing with my marineland c360 cannister filter. Pita when I clean it and I have to mess with it because of the issues with getting all the air purged out of it.
Great info Ben!! Sump- thing for everyone!!
Happy thanksgiving
Just great tanks and sump systems. I noticed the red Oscar had to hog in on the camera action. Thank you for sharing with us. Have a great thanksgiving!
Sump videos are the best!!!👍🏿☺️
Good video Ben. I also use Poret foam in my sump, great for housing beneficial bacteria.
I have been waiting for this , I’m about to make this on 55 sump myself 😊
Hey ben ! 🐠 💧. Ive always been a canister guy……. But i plan. Getting my first sump. In. January for the 150 gallon im buying…….. your videos are helping me learn. Thanks ! ✅
That’s awesome Mike
Looks great, I hope to get my DIY 29 gal sump going on my 75gal Koi tank in the next week or two. Have a ton of logistics I still need to figure out, moving tank from one floor to another.
Good luck 🍀👍 with moving the tank
Very interesting Ben
Thank you for sharing 🙂
Great work Ben!!!
I’m gonna try my hand at drilling holes in glass myself on a crappy tank , watched diy king showing the process
GLASSCAGES ARE AMAZING ❤️
True
I love these sump setups they are great and really do the job probably imo the best and easiest to use.💗✌️👍💯
Great update on the tank and sump setup!!
Really enjoyed This video Ben.
Like the sumps Ben. As always, very real and useful content. I finally got back from travels and will send you that video. I turned the issue into a science project, ha. I will send you the videos and results tomorrow. ~Tim
Great tanks, Ben! I used that simple design on a 20 long sump and it’s been working great. 👍
Great video Ben, thank you for the update.
On the 40 breeder, what PPI foam did you use ?
I’m doing the same exact setup in a 40 for my 75 gallon.
10, 20 & 20 ppi, each 4” thick from Swiss Tropicals who cut them for me.
Thank you
Thanks for the info Ben. What test kit do you use for water quality testing?
I’ve been using Aquarium Co-op test strips and I’m about to test the strips from SERA.
How do you manage your pre filter on your FX? I tried several sponges on both my FX 6 & 4. And as soon as they get a little soiled. They get sucked down flat. And collapse.
Use a more coarse filter. Medium and fine get clogged quickly.
Be very careful with that 1 way valve , it does not work as how you thought it would , the trickling water will still allow a small siphon to continue sucking water from the main tank to the sump , you gonna need a siphon breaker on your return pipe outlet .
Yes. One way valves are not total back-siphon solutions. They can fail, leak and not totally shut down when duty. This is why I keep outputs right at the surface and drill a small hole just below the water line of the hook on return in the 210. That breaks and stops the siphon.
Hello Ben! I have an offtopic & a casual question... Do you cycle? If yes how often in a week? Let me be very honest with you, I am blown my your energy levels, it good to be fit like you and would like to know what keeps your energy levels always high.
I’m cycling less recently because it’s gotten too cold for me, so instead I’m doing indoor workouts usually with a large balance ball, along with running up steps and some light weight lifting.
@@BenOchart Cool... Thanks for sharing that with me, ever since pandemic, life has become pathetic, lots of work load and no time for workouts... planning to go for cycling at least thrice a week just to keep the stress levels down if not they are eating me up hahaha. Thanks again see you tomorrow 😀
Hi Ben, I'm wondering how big of a sump filter I would need for a 56 gallon tall tank. Thank you
Usually I recommend sumps for larger tanks, 100 gallon on up. But that doesn’t mean they can’t or shouldn’t be used on smaller tanks. A 10 gallon would work but a 20 tall would be easier to work with and provide more water volume.
Thanks Ben for the help 🙂
Hi Ben
Can you please advise please
I'm in the process of getting a new tank 48x30x25" ( about 550 litres) (147 usg) think thatx right ??
Anyway after watching this video I'm now wondering if it would be better to have a small sump tank rather than my FX6 ?
Also how do you work out what size sump you need for uour main tank ?
Many thanks
Steve
I’d use that FX-6 and a sump, like a 29 gal or 40 breeder
Love the set up in the 40 gallon sump. The 3 sponges look like the best way to go with no baffles. Adding that extra water volume also appeals to me. I never tried a sump I use canisters and HOB filters. Do you know of a product than can add an overflow to a 125g tank that is not drilled?
Several companies make them. Just Google “overflow boxes”
Thanks I will
Hi Ben. I was wondering if you knew anything about Sicce Whale canister filters. If you do what are your thoughts about them.
I haven’t used the Sicce Whale canister.
Ben, I'm sorry, I must have missed something in the first video. I thought the simple set up with just the 3 - 4" sponges were enough to do the filtering, no to clean with any other filters? But you are saying, a canister filtering system is still needed to run in conjunction with the sponges..?
No. It's just my preference and I always like a running back-up in case another system fails. Truth is that a simple sump with only sponges could do a fine job all by itself.

Where did you find that one way valve? Can't find one anywhere.
How did you dial in your return pump flow rate to your overflow drain rate? Are the pumps adjustable?
Pumps are not adjustable but their GPH is within the range that the overflow box is rated for. Drilled external overflow boxes come with a suggested GPH
why do you have the canister? I am planning on setting up a very similar discus system with just the Poret foam. Do you think I need the canister too?
I would need more info to answer like size of tank, how heavily will it be stocked, feeding and maintenance routines etc to really answer your question. All that aside, I like having a back up. If one fails or is being worked on, the other one keeps working.
👍🏻😎What micron of sock are you using?
200 (it's been a while, but that's my guess)
@@BenOchart That seems to be what everybody uses. Thanks.
