Then again, she combines that with the expectation that a decedent's survivor should personally toil to pay off any debts of the estate regardless of whether they're fully substantiated. As a judge, she knows that's not how probate law works.

It wasn't just that the estate owed the Plaintiff the money. It's that she was a good friend of the mother's. Not just a credit card company or the like. That's what makes it so disgusting. This is a disturbing example of pure greed.
I agree with that. If someone had been a close and faithful friend to my mother, it would be spitting in my mother's face to treat her friend that way. A friend who was probably there for her more than her children, yet likely only received a few sentimental items when she passed

My grandmother's best friend, my dad's mother I mean, hired him to do contracting services several times. My grandmother would be FURIOUS about the way that he's been treated after the last time!!! This woman came back MONTHS LATER with a supposed issue and he agreed to return. Just a few days before he was supposed to, she filled all sorts of complaints against him that went nowhere, demanded increasingly ludicrous amounts of money, suddenly texted him to come back and finish the job after MONTHS of that, disappeared for a couple of years and then suddenly sued him over it!!! However, we're not sure if it's her or her family this time because she recently greeted him with a hug when they ran into each other and she gives my mom a friendly honk of the horn when she drives by. We think that she probably let it go in the end and that her kid who was pressing the issue before might be doing this behind her back now.

When my father died my brothers asked everyone if my father owed people money to pay them...Debts after death are a burden on the deceased soul..This man's mother never knew she was going to leave and he ignored and disrespected her soul instead of paying her friend back the money they should have spent on a trip.

The defendant is a deadbeat, but JJ has said time after time that this is not a moral court but a court of equity, the law is the law. He may have got away with it in a real court, but it shows how selective JJ can be.

I'm a bit on the fence with next of kin being responsible for someone else's debt. In this case though, the mother's estate can cover the outstanding debt so I'm not sure why the guy didn't just pony it up. Legally she is entitled. But if the mother didn't have the money and died, not sure how I'd feel about it.
Estate is responsible for the debt. I assume the three brothers are representatives of the estate.
That's what I meant by "mother's estate". My comment was more directed at those whose kin wouldn't cover the debt.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with JJ here. If my mother ran up debt with someone, that’s her responsibility. You can’t burden your children with money that you can’t pay back.
But his mom left him money though. If she didn’t leave anything then I would say judge judy is wrong because it would be unfair for them to pay their mother’s death BUT the mother left them HER money so they can use HER money to pay of HER debt
