ADDENDUM THREAD (ongoing): Shadows are shiny locked for the AI during their FIRST encounter, but can still become shiny when caught by the player. For subsequent rematches, they can become shiny for the AI. The NPC that gives the player the Cologne Case only appears after defeating Dakim at Mt. Battle. (I knew this just completely forgot to add it in lol)
Cologne scents also remove exp gained. Also if you revive a fainted shadow pkmn after already having sent them out, and send them BACK out, they get a second bar drop the same way they do when normally sent out.
while I know this video is for Colosseum 1, in XD the shiny lock was fixed so that even when you catch shadow pokemon in XD, they can never become shiny like in Colosseum 1, so when going into XD after Colo1, just keep that in mind that you cant ever get shiny shadow pokemon
Yeah, I think it helps solidify the idea of how dangerous shadow Pokemon can be. I really like the returning inside its pokeball mechanic too. Pretty funny and helps the pokemon stand out as individuals more.
You’re exactly right, I DO need a video I can eat to for every small topic, and I need to watch it so many times that it becomes a comfort video I can sleep to
Ngl it's really coincidental you started releasing content in November, I personally have this really weird annual itch in my brain to revisit gale of darkness every November so being introduced to your channel has been a delight!
It's only if you lose/fail the initial encounter with the Shadow, not during its initial encounter. Hitmontop is really the sole problematic Pokemon here, as you're forced to see it battle Rui's grandfather, which is how it can appear shiny for Wes/the Player in the second, TID re-rolled fight.
Additionally, its exactly due to that programming that we can shiny hunt them ourselves. In the first battle they're shiny locked for the TID of the enemy trainer, so the opposite can happen; a nonshiny Shadow on the opponent's team can be caught and turn shiny for us. And unlike them getting the shinies, this can happen the first time we encounter them.
2:37 something worth pointing out is that shadow pokemon are actually shiny locked, but the lock only works properly on the first battle. im not sure why this happens, but it *might* be because the game determines what the pokemon's stats and shininess will be for you on the first battle, and these stats remain the same on the 2nd battle. so its *possible* the trainer sends out "your version" of the pokemon during the 2nd battle instead of one thats properly shiny locked.
I'm no speedrunner by far, but it's beyond cool to get some solid confirmation on some of this in-depth info. Colosseum is such an awesome game, it's a crime that nobody's been looking in-depth into this stuff for so long.
I'm playing a 100% run myself, and good lord I am so happy I learned about Metagross and Tyranitar's heart gauge before I tried to do those raw Exceptionally informative video! Helpful and thorough without wasting a second. Good stuff!
Oh, this is so cool!! I spent so much time playing colosseum as a kid, and I noticed that different Pokémon I caught early on had drastically different responses to getting called and such but figured it varied per Pokémon. That Natures play such a huge role is wild! Your videos are phenomenal and the group chat had a field day with the last one. I’m looking forward to whatever comes next!
15:40 I have never felt a joke more Anyways great to see more Colo/XD content! If this is a regular thing I’m glad someone’s doing it Also, stupid and slow purification strat I found organically incoming. Lower accuracy of the opposing two pokemon as well as the mon you want to purify on the battlefield until they almost never hit. I did it about 4 times on each mon with Quilava’s Smokescreen. Weirdly enough, missing shadow rush makes hyper mode activate more often. Because you don’t waste PP and have access to Call to waste even less PP on your other pokemon, this can lead to literally fully depleting the heart gauge of a pokemon in one battle easily. All you have to do is every time the mon enters hyper mode, Call it to reduce its heart gauge. The opposing pokemon are extremely unlikely to hit you very often, and you can use potions to mitigate most of that threat. I could have got some stuff wrong, but that’s basically how I did it. Just the one thing I feel like I could contribute to the conversation about faster purifying.
“Hey everybody, its me! Sparkle, from Colosseums! Some of my favorite things are: watching paint dry, the Pokemon Black and White anime, using Shadow Rush 500 times, aaaaand dirt! See you all in Pokemon Colosseum 3!”
These videos are really amazing! Funnily enough I just started playing colosseum for the first time a couple days ago and found your channel right after you uploaded the second video! Really enjoying watching these while I do my playthrough!
I found your channel about a week ago and was blown away with how funny, interesting, and well done your videos are even though you only have a few. Im excited to see how your channel develops further and cant wait to support you all the way, keep up the great work! 💪🏼
Your channel rocks! I started a new save recently, and I instantly remembered how awesomely different the experience is, compared to anything else Pokémon has to offer. It's awesome to learn things from a childhood game, I never questioned before :3
The fact I already knew almost everything but still learned something new, you are absolutely wonderful to watch! Thanks for covering such a niche game.
Just binged all 3 of your videos and it’s crazy to think you’re new at this. The videos play and sound as though you are seasoned. Awesome stuff, looking forward to more!!
Technically, you can RNG Manip the Shadow Quilava. It's just very, VERY annoying and takes a lot of resets because of how much RNG noise is in Phenac. But I've successfully RNG Manip'd two Shiny Quilavas. One for my first playthrough, and one as a Ribbon Master to keep as Quilava and send to Hisui to evolve into the Hisuian version. The new tool Copilot being in English, able to find your Initial Seed fairly quickly through image recognition, and released before I began playing was also very helpful. Also, congrats on your channel growing. I found it because I started the Ribbon Master journey, and trying to complete it before Bank closes. There might be a correlation if there are people like me who started playing because of Bank's impending closure, and the growth of your channel.
17:22 um, excuse you. Don't interrupt my visual simulation by putting text on the screen _explaining that the spreadsheet is for _*_visual stimulation!_*
13:00 ok im convinced of future colo videos, subbed. But im warning you, if there isnt any ludicolo content in the future my lawyer will hear about this.
0:13 -0:16 amen to this. Is crazy how much info and content does not exist yet even a simple beginner tutorial/update guide or tips for some games is just mental.
Thank you for taking the time to compile all of this information and make a video of it! It's really great to have all of this data in one place, and I learned a ton from everything you shared. 0v0 I always loved this game, but never understood much about the whole shadow Pokemon mechanic aside from the surface level stuff. It felt deeply satisfying to finally know the actual numbers behind this mechanic and all its intricacies, so again, thank you!
Colosseum is a game I love a ton so to get to finally learn so much stuff about the game we didn't know until now makes me giddy. Also I love the structure of the videos you've put out so far, they've been REALLY engaging and really help the info stick :D
1:01 THIS. _This_ is the explanation for the game's story, something somehow a lot of people don't seem to pick up on (though Colosseum does do a poor job of explaining it).
This video popped up in my feed, and I’m so glad it did. I loved it from the start! Not just for its content, but also the jokes, how you present everything, etc. Chef’s kiss. Instantly subbed after the first minute or two. Can’t wait to binge the rest! Keep up the good work, and good luck on your runs!! :)
Saw the Plusle video a few weeks ago and enjoyed it, UA-cam recommended me this one as soon as it came out and it was also great, so subbed! I would love to see a video on XD Shadows too!
Now we're mawile gaming! Nice to see the numbers behind the hyper mode odds. The daycare walking method is definitely the strangest way of decreasing the heart gauge, always sucks when you get one of the 'boss shadows' with that as the highest decrease method.
Love the editing and chill fibe. I knew the game from years ago, but never played. Someone taking so much time to test out the 1hp difference of recoil damage from a move from an old gamecube niche game deserve my sub! Let's go!
Fantastic video!! I really love learning all this stuff about Colosseum, I really like it and learning all this deeper stuff is REALLY cool (I had no idea about the bar table stuff that is SICK)!!! I can't wait to see what you make next (though I absolutely will, time is quality), your videos are amazing and I love how you make them :D Also, I love all the arts of your avatar featured in the video, I'm really glad you credited the artists! Definitely gonna check them out
I may not play Colosseum, but ever since i stumbled on your video on Plusel sending people to the shadow realm, consider me intrigued to learn more as a subscriber. Keep up the good work!
I really appreciate the effort and commitment to these videos! Colosseum is a personal fav of mine, and it’s nice to see the game still getting love after all of these years.
I do not own a GameCube, I have never played Colosseum or Gale of Darkness in my life, and yet here I am still! Your last two videos were awesome, and this one only improved on them imo. All of the jokes were hilarious, keep up the great work!!
Just found your channel, this is awesome! Since you gave a bunch of fun facts and showed a Misty, a fun fact back for you: It's not obvious because the distribution is weird, but the expected value of playing a Misty in Pocket is flipping *exactly* 1 heads!
"Ore" in Japanese means "I". "Ore" is only for use by males. Also, "ore" implies that the speaker is a bit of a rough brute. For males who are not rough brutes, "boku" is a better way to say "I". I think that the region may be named after that. The Ore region is full of rough brutes and ut seems that the name is even pronounced like the Japanese word as opposed to pronouncing it like English people typically would.
easiest sub ever, i've always been enamored with the gamecube games and their quirks (unique icons for shiny variations being one of them) keep doing your thing, sparkle
I'm a completionist, and the minute I saw "Natures" was on fire, I lost it 😂 I didn't know there was an actual calculation tool for the natures, I just gave my Pokémon a massage and tried to guess based on the size of the dent it made in the heart gauge 😅
Thank you for this video! The in depth guide is super helpful. By the end I think the interruptions for video meme responses got old and more got in the way rather than being funny or helpful. Maybe you could edit in screenshots of them to keep the same effect but better improve the flow of the video for those listening?
Nice video Sparkle, ones of the biggest things I had to learn on my own was that shadow pokemon do not get EVs. One of the big pieces of false info online is that Shadow Pokemon gain EVs once they can gain experience. I didnt actually know about the catch rate changes, no wonder Toegtic is so annoying, well besides the level of your opponent otherwise.
Okay i THINK this is the second video I've seen of yours and the "I don't expect you to understand this, i just need visual stimulation for the video" gag absolutely locked me into future videos lmfao
Great video Sparkle, like most I’m guessing, found you via the Plusle video, have been watching the speed run from ~7 months ago in chunks, looking forward to more videos in the future :)
I know I am probs an outlier in your audience for never having played either shadow mon game, but thanks for the lore recap. I got to have the massive realisation that my role playing concept, evil group that encourages an excessive battling culture that damages pokemon mentally and physically, has been done before, so if I ever actually get to play that role play, I will try to incorporate shadow game elements. Maybe give characters with a high magic affinity the ability to "see" the shadow on overworked pokemon. Only I will have to invent something equally exciting about their rival team, the team "flight/fawn" to the previous team "fight".
I love this game and love getting some good nostalgia from your videos but DAMN ARE THEY FUNNY I watch these at work and frequently find myself cracking up and trying to hold it together as to not be judged 😂
Found a secondhand copy of Colosseum at my local game store earlier this year and got to play it for the first time. This game has not aged a day! I'd go as far as to say it's aged better than the mainline gen 3 entries, TBH. Obviously, I had no clue how the Shadow Gauge worked during my playthrough. Managed to get Entei purified after much battles, and just resorted to using flutes for the other Legendary Beasts. XD A video like this would've been convenient, lol.
I used to play this game so much as a kid but I never hear anyone talk about it. Great to see it still has a community! I'd love to see a future video on Shadow Pokémon in XD :)
As someone who grew up with XD it's always fun to see the under the hood stuff that I never knew about! Also have not commented on this before but Mawile sona is absolutely peak ✨️
anyone else who didn't have time for all that nature nonsense when purifying and just left their gamecube running overnight while running into an invisible wall in agate village
Colosseum was my first Pokémon game and I didn't play any others until much later, so this channel scratches that weird hyper specific nostalgic itch in my brain that I imagine leads others to watch hours and hours of niche video essays and deep dives on the GBA games.
As per the section regarding Hyper Mode and move selection, there's an interesting glitch or similar going on here when reselecting the move. I selected 'Thunder' when in Hyper Mode before which changed to Shadow Rush, and was still able to hit a Flying/Bouncing opponent, so the move keeps the additional properties of the original move!
Save me colosseum video essays SAVE MEEE (seriously, I love your vids on this game sparkle, I really appreciate you documenting your knowledge and findings on them!)
so glad i stumbled onto this channel! that's three bangers in a row tempting me more and more to revisit my favorite pokemon game (again..) any chance for a grand colosseum video? ik its a longshot since you run vanilla buuuut tbh its my favorite version of the game so i'd love to see one!
Duuuude Pokemon Colosseum, a classic. Would play this all the time with my little brother. Took forever to figure out the mechanics for Shadow Pokemon hahaha. Nice video. 💪

Why do you deliberately withhold information in the video? You're making it unnecessarily frustrating for those who just want the information.
@jeffcarroll1990shock Every topic teased was addressed once the necessary context was set up. I like my videos to be organized.
I love that Hyper Mode can just randomly make them attack the other trainers and that they all have an animation for it too
Yoooo Shayy
Trauma zoomies being a major plot point was not on anyone’s bingo card
Yeah, I think it helps solidify the idea of how dangerous shadow Pokemon can be.
I really like the returning inside its pokeball mechanic too. Pretty funny and helps the pokemon stand out as individuals more.
It's my favorite Froggit Speedrunner.
I've only ever heard of it as little more than a footnote on bulbapedia, I've never seen it myself
Ah time to learn about a in-depth mechanic about a game I haven't played in 10+ years.
Feels like a great time to replay it

Same but colosseum for me I actually just finished the main part and I'm working on tyranitar now
if you play on emulator you should try the ROMhack pokemon xg next generation, I’d highly recommend it
bro same, whats the chances
shinies turning normal when you catch them is evil as frick

The way natures play a part in the mechanics of Shadow Pokemon is super cool. Really helps to make each evil mind-controlled virtual animal unique!
6:41 this knocked the wind outta me! The writer of that joke deserves a raise!

I didn't know Shadows could attack trainers outside of the first scripted cutscene. That's really funny and also kinda neat.

Gotta love how this game’s 1/256 was an actual intended thing they did, versus just being a programming oversight like the Gen 1 Miss 👏

As someone who grew up with XD it's always fun to see the under the hood stuff that I never knew about! Also have not commented on this before but Mawile sona is absolutely peak ✨️
great video. didn’t know you were on youtube. can’t wait for more colosseum vids
Your videos are very entertaining and informative. I hope you keep making more.
anyone else who didn't have time for all that nature nonsense when purifying and just left their gamecube running overnight while running into an invisible wall in agate village
Colosseum was my first Pokémon game and I didn't play any others until much later, so this channel scratches that weird hyper specific nostalgic itch in my brain that I imagine leads others to watch hours and hours of niche video essays and deep dives on the GBA games.
i feel so knowledgable now. unrelated but i love your avatar. the mawile inspiration is cool
0:15 Bro, I feel so called out. Literally just replace the word "supper" with "lunch" and you have exactly what I'm doing rn.
As per the section regarding Hyper Mode and move selection, there's an interesting glitch or similar going on here when reselecting the move. I selected 'Thunder' when in Hyper Mode before which changed to Shadow Rush, and was still able to hit a Flying/Bouncing opponent, so the move keeps the additional properties of the original move!
never felt so called out while eating during a video before
Save me colosseum video essays SAVE MEEE (seriously, I love your vids on this game sparkle, I really appreciate you documenting your knowledge and findings on them!)
so glad i stumbled onto this channel! that's three bangers in a row tempting me more and more to revisit my favorite pokemon game (again..)
any chance for a grand colosseum video? ik its a longshot since you run vanilla buuuut tbh its my favorite version of the game so i'd love to see one!
"Every minute topic needs a video you can eat to. It's the rules."
17 seconds and I'm already grinning. Why am I simping so hard?
Crosscode music spotted, you have fantastic taste
Duuuude Pokemon Colosseum, a classic. Would play this all the time with my little brother. Took forever to figure out the mechanics for Shadow Pokemon hahaha. Nice video. 💪
