      My childhood pet was Tuffy. She was red. I got her when I was 5, and she lived until my freshman college year. ❤️

    Rigby was and still is my Baby, she got diabetes then went blind, she was suffering so we had her put down in November, her ashes are with us now under a glass top table covered with her photos, I cry every day just thinking about her, she was such a wonderful dog, but I'll never have another one, losing them takes away so much of your heart making it difficult to survive, Rigby I hope your waiting for me I want us to be together again some day xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

    This is... not the best guide. For anyone wondering about this breed from someone who's ACTUALLY had one. Cockers are extremely affectionate and playful but require almost constant companionship and stimulation. If you are gone most of the day you should either get two so they have a companion or choose a different breed. They definitely are NOT a quiet breed. They are excitable, can be shy around strangers, and will bark when startled or if they see someone they don't know. They will be vocal and grumble or complain at you if they feel they're being ignored or to be playful. They are excellent with children and aren't prone to jealousy.
    Cockers LOVE food and squeaky balls. Give them a ball to play with and they'll carry it around for hours. Fetch is a definite favorite. They're highly intelligent and learn extremely quickly. Due to that intelligence, though, they are escape artists and can figure out how to open doors, cabinets, and even unscrew the lids on bottles. Their excitable nature and happiness to be with people results in a tail that never stops moving to the point that their whole body will shake and wiggle. They are ALWAYS happy to see you and want to be right up against you.
    Due to their being hunting dogs they have a very strong sense of smell and can become hyperfocused on an intriguing scent trail to the point that they don't even hear you calling for them so keep them on a leash if you're near a busy road.
    Drawbacks of the breed are that they are prone to ear infections, cataracts, and hip dysplasia. You will need to clean their ears regularly and keep the hair under the ears short to encourage air flow. They do tend to have longer hair so frequent brushing is encouraged unless you choose to keep their fur cut short. Cockers can bite when startled or hurt but can be trained out of it during puppyhood by saying a sharp "No!" and removing all contact from the pup for a few moments to reinforce the message. They are very sensitive to tone and a reprimand is very effective.
    I highly recommend this breed for anyone that wants a constant loving companion. They're sweet and goofy will make you laugh your whole life with them. They usually live around 12-15 years.

      @@nicolezamora965 I'm sorry for your loss. My Dante is turning 12 this year and has arthritis, cataracts, and is hard of hearing. I know it's going to devastate me when we lost him so I definitely sympathize with you. I hope she's chasing balls in heaven. 💗

      Hi. I was wondering. Are they vocal to the point that you wouldn't recommend one (mix of one) in an apartment setting? Thanks.

    • @RivkahSong
      @RivkahSong 2 роки тому +4

      @@HRHCarpathia That would depend on how much time you spend with them. They are highly intelligent and trainable so you can definitely teach them not to bark at someone knocking on the door or loud sounds next door. However, they can't stand to be alone. If you're going to be out of the house for most of the day and don't have a second dog then yeah, they're going to act out or be loud.
      The other sounds they make, like the grumbling or being vocal I don't think would be loud enough to bother neighbors (though I admittedly haven't lived in an apartment since I was a child). They are definitely no where near as loud or vocal as a husky so no screaming, howling, or super loud complaining.

    had a cocker spaniel when i was a kid she passed when i was 14 (so was she) she was sweet and cuddly and a bit clumpy (she ran onto our frozen over pool one winter and we had to use the leaf scoop to guide her to the steps so we could pull her out) she loved cuddling (and stealing my food).
    husband and i are looking to get one from a rescue in a few months if we can find one.

      Same. and he's only 4 months old. He can be stopped from doing anything by diverting his attention to something else. But, he has a great memory, so he won't forget for long. He loves to run, and runs very fast with those large, long hind legs. He tortures the family cat, but the cat gets him back, lol.

      Cocker spaniels do have a tendency to bite but can be trained out of it. If your dog bites you say a loud and sharp "NO!" to startle them and then don't touch or interact with them for a couple minutes. It may take a few repetitions but eventually they will learn that biting=loud noises and no attention and will stop doing it. You can also spray them with a quick spritz of cold water in the face while saying "no" to reinforce that startling result. Just be patient.
