I've been using tracing paper rolls for a long time. Lately I discovered the soft diffusion of Ikea white shower curtains. For $8 - $14 you get a nice large (71"x71") translucent material. I used Klockaren because it was on sale, but they have a few choices. Side note: Ikea names its bath items after lakes and bodies of water, bed textiles are plants and flowers, shelves are boys names and you can look up the rest. They all mean something.
I've used shower curtain material in the past, they can be trickier to use. Depends on the setup. They're more floppy and don't come in long rolls. Haven't tried tracing paper before, having a roll of it would be much handier.
I sense love and art for you profession because you easily could have used a green screen with the Mondriaan cubicles projected. But that never would have given the same result. Great vid👍🏾
JP your videos are done so well and so tasteful!! No dancing around, loud music or other overdone silly crap like certain others on YT I avoid. You are a true professional and don't need gimmicks to get views. Also, Perfect audio as I can understand every word you said even with the room ambience. Don't ever change a thing!!!
Liked, subscribed, and used your paid link to purchase the Datacolor ColorReader EZ. Have a regular job where a softbox is a struggle due to the low ceiling and your tracing paper idea is brilliant. Well done and thank you for your effort!
I love the checkr card. You might think it's a bit expensive for a card with some color patches on it, but it saves a lot of time in post and I can't imagine any other solution that would be as fast and accurate as this is (or a comparable card from some other manufacturer).
Thanks for this Jay. Just wondering, since your ceiling height is low and it looked fairly white, what if you had just bounced your light off it and skipped the vellum paper?
Good question, I think since the ceiling is much bigger, there will be a lot of light spill in unnecessary areas and will not light the backdrop evenly.
What's the added benefit of the colorreader instead of just taking a color calibrated photo and then digitally picking the color? Is it really worth the $50?
Another very helpful video showing studio lighting alternatives to Soft Boxes and other large modifiers. Very useful tips on color, color accuracy, and bkgd ideas too, Thank you!
Great video exept for one fact. I see you have a ehite studio. Iwould bouncing the light o. The roof not have achieved the same effect? I used this at children partis and weddings where i had no timeto setup a softbox. It gives the same result.
Great video enjoyed the ideas in lighting and also the background creativity for product shots. I have used white kitchen baking paper as diffusion from sides and 45 degress but not from above like you did. Although I have a low ceiling Im a speedlite guy and can get them up above with a softbox when needed however I often find myself using the ceiling itself as my big softbox giving a big broad diffused light with very little shadow but I fancy trying that overhead diffusion idea you showed as an alternative with more control over light, shadow and direction.
I am surprised that anyone is suggesting tracing paper with continuous light. It is a fire hazard. Just because a few Pro's do it and haven't had a fire doesn't mean its safe. Please people, buy Rosco or Lee diffusion rolls. Yes they are expensive, but much less than the cost of damage that a fire could cause.
@@TheSlantedLens What good Hobby is there that's; Rewarding, and/or worth doing that's "CHEAP" ? My Remote Controlled 60-97mph boat(s) cost just about the same.
I completely understand the point of using tracing paper when a softbox won't do (or isn't available), but a minor and somewhat pedantic point for your demonstration...couldn't you have staged the setup of the shoes and background much lower to the ground and...used a softbox? Sorry, I couldn't resist.
@@TheSlantedLens true, but wouldn't you still be faced with the issue of spreading the light evenly over the longer surface of the tracing paper...or is it just that the 'unlit' paper acts as a white reflector?
Nice vid. Let me help you in return. De stijl. Pronounce De as duh, but keep it short. Pronounce stijl simply as style, the way you do it now you sound like a German.
And using Datacolor device to get the complimenting color swatches, PRICELESS!

Why waste all the time and resources when you could just use photoshop?

Broadcast Sheet Lighting!!! Sweet! It truly gives the softest wrap-around light in the studio! Thank you for teaching this

Very useful tutorial especially for those who shoot in the tight space.

Good question, I think since the ceiling is much bigger, there will be a lot of light spill in unnecessary areas and will not light the backdrop evenly.
Good question! You loose control. You can't light the background separately and if the ceiling is too far away you have to move the entire set up.
Great input! Love it!

A color checker is a must for products.
Now using the paper how much does it change the Kevin temp?
For the background what material did you paint?
We used Luan for the background, it paints out really smooth. We did not check the Kelvin temperature difference. Good question!
Hello, Thank you for the video. I wanted to ask if you can make a Spyder Checker Tutorial. How to use it in Capture 1? Thank you!
That is an interesting topic. We will brainstorm on that.

Great video, thank you, do you think it would have been worthwhile slightly knocking down the light somehow on the top shoe?
We did tone down the light from above. Thanks for watching!
@@TheSlantedLens thank you again, this would have affected the lower shoe?
Try using Garden Fleece - does exactly the same job, but you can stuff it in a bag afterwards.

I use grease proof paper to defuse constant lighting. I started using when I used to use red head lights for video work.

Bouncing light off the ceiling is another approach. Thanks for watching!
Given the low ceiling, is it feasible to simy bounce the flash off it? Just wondering...
If you bounce the flash off the ceiling then you don't have control of the size of the highlight. It gives you less control.
Hi! What did you use to attach the fill cards?
Those are A-clamps: bhpho.to/3QDgwpa
@@TheSlantedLens I meant to what to did you attach them with the a clams?
What do they call the framework you use to hold the tracing paper?
We used C-stands and A clamps to hold up the tracing paper.

How about a white bed sheet?
That might work as well. Depends on how much light it lets through.
