- A UC Berkeley student recently went viral on Reddit for commuting to his classes on a commercial airliner. The engineering student named Bill, who didn't want to share his last name, says his apartment was so cheap in Los Angeles he devised a plan to fly to classes three times per week for a year. It wasn't easy though; he'd wake up before dawn, catch a flight to San Fransisco and then take the BART to school in time for his 10:00 a.m. class. After school, he would do the commute in reverse and get home around midnight. He probably lives at home with his family in LA and just flys to the bay area.

How does this make sense?
If my math is correct, then he is sleeping 3 hours a day and on the airplane. Why not sleep in a couch or one of the free housings?
My guess is he is doing it on Mon, Wed and Fri instead of consecutive days, that’s the only way I would do that schedule. Consecutive days with that schedule would kill me and I would find a place there to sleep.
Rent is stupid high in CA. Not everyone is in tech and making ridiculous money.

why not virtual classes. I could live elsewhere and keep my job which is 100% remote, but my mortgage is cheap because I brought my house before everything went up.
This doesn't make sense. So he gets up and goes from LAX to SFO starting at 3 AM but also arrives home in LA at midnight. Does he only get sleep on the plane? So he just spends 3 hours at home? Does he take online classes as well and how many days of the week does he attend class?

Cost of BART, the park and fly at LAX, and the cost to fly round trip to SFO 3 times a week would far exceed the difference in rent between LA and SF. This is not a money saving story and tbh I’m frankly confused why this is even considered news. I worked 10 years for a company that had me on a plane all week. Where’s my sob story?
