Studying this after my first Kyokushin class made me jump right in, so I can do it better next time. The small rituals of katas are kind of therapeutic in how they add periods of structure & action to my daily life, regardless of circumstance. It's a good balm for severe insomnia and the standard comorbid depression; my broken body can't rest but it sure can do this, and someday it's gonna axe-kick a board in half. I've seen advice that depressed lesbians should take up a martial art and let me tell you, it seems right on the money tonight. Osu.
This is one of the highest kata and when I heard of it I thought that it's so hard to learn. But it was actually pretty easy lol. My dad learned me this when I was around 10 years old and when I had blue belt. The same thing was with pinan katas.
I am a Goju ryu karate practitioner and we practice gekisaidai ichi and gekisaidai ni. Which is quite similar to these. Actually kyukoshin karate has adopted this kata and reformed it from goju ryu.
@@jean4j_ wasn't much of a reform is more the case of kyokushin not really caring much about kata (as opossed to caring WAY too much about kata like other mainland styles like shito-ryu)

@robertvoice agree, many years ago I've done wushu with emphasis on southern styles like hung gar and choy li fut, eventhough i did modern wushu, in the forms that I practiced I saw more effective moves then the crappy northern styles. I think the only effective northern style is bajiquan/8 extreme fist and still love to see these forms and applications.
@robertvoice wrong in my eyes. Kung Fu is passed down from generation to generation without hardly any changes so thats more like windows. KYOKUSHIN however is a combination and customization of styles to eventually be the strongest karate, and it's still being developed just like Linux :)
I had to learn Tsuki no Kata to graduate for 5th Kyu (yellow ,green stripe) For my next graduation (Green belt, 4th Kyu) i have to learn Gekisai Dai, Pinan Sono San, Pinan Sono Yon. So i guess the order in wich Kata`s are tought is way different from your style.
Yeah, as long as you know them all by the time you go for your 1st Dan suppose it doesn't really matter all that much. I need Pinan Sono San for... my 4th Kyu too. Going for my 5th Kyu next which is Pinan Sono Ni. We seem to spread our Kata out a lot over the belts right up to 3rd Dan. 1st Dan - Sanchin, Saifa and Yantsu are needed a long with Bo kata 1 and 2. 2nd Dan - Sei Yunchin and Tensho with Sai Kata 1 and 2. 3rd Dan needs Seipai, Shishochin and Kanku Dai and may have to do 100 Kumite.
What Kyu is your green belt though? Green in my style (Seiki-Juku, very similar syllabus to Kyokushinkai) is 4th (green white stripe) and 3rd (Green) Kyu. Gekisai Dai is a first Kyu Brown Belt Kata in our style, along with Tsuki no Kata.

A little bit different from the goju ryu version, some steps are longer and there are a few extra steps.
So is the morote tsuki at the end there "yama tsuki"? Or would that be the one in gekisai-sho, or just something different entirely?
So is Kyokushin itself. Its full contact/knock down fighting. Unlike Goju Ryu or so.
