Hey guys, this French guide is still the best 1 TC French 1v1 build as of right now (start of 2024) this is the GO TO GUIDE! French 2 TC Guide is also on my YT channel and pretty much not much has changed.
Dam dude. Please make all Ur guides in this format going fwd Just describing from a civ perspective, how you attack/manoeuvre units and what you are thinking about in detail from a macro perspective is gold dust for us scrubs.. Really brings the game to light. Build order are important and all but this was EPIC Thank you!
XQC has been playing a lot and now im addicted. I grew up playing Runescape but i don't have the time anymore. This is like runescape 30min sessions. Thank you for explaining everything so well
42:30 I find arbs are good to get a posse of in Castle against Chinese because they tend to auto-build palace guards, and arbs shred them. Knights do to, but arbs are probably more cost-efficient for that task.
No rams works if you are playing serious players or ranked because most of the times im my experience they will not give up no matter what even if you you killed 99/100 villagers they will sneak in one somewhere opposite where you cant see and starts rebuilding so just ram 4 land marks and you done instead of going for 35+ minutes game
if you are working this technique against a lower level players they will not even defend as good as the opponent shown here in this video. why step off the gas pedal by making rams?
Ty for the guide its super helpful. and would u please tell us how to against civils who has really good defense like Rus. I'm like around plat to diamond and I only have 15% win rate against Rus.
32:25. When I move my knights and archers in like that, my archers just start shooting at stupid things like houses and lumber camps. Do I have to target fire villagers? I am concerned if I do that I won't get many villagers as they will target one at a time and overkill.
If you A-move with ranged units, they will always attack units *in range* if there are no units in range they will shoot at buildings and bad stuff like you mention. It’ easier to A-move with melee units like this since they chase down their targets to hit them so their targets stay *in range* for longer unlike range units
I just played vs french and 6mins in game at feudal - french came with 3 knights and heal while in combat !!! took out all my man at arms and archers! WHAT IN THE F>>>>> ?SA?SA?SA?S?AS? Nevermnd they were mongols and were next to he's feudal building, im such a noob xd
Anytime I go 2 TC I get pressured before I can get enough units out to deal with anything. By then they controlled my recourses and I'm trapped at base and can't trade. idk.
I feel like a civ that has feudal crossbows would be fun. chukonu dont count. I feel like French having awesome crossbows is so weird for their current playstyle for how good knights are. Maybe they are needed to fight mass man at arms or something i dunno.
In castle the enemy tends to go xbow to deal with knights, and then mixes spears with Maa and knights of their own. Knight archer becomes super cost ineffective with knights getting oneshotted by xbows when they charge, and then the archers die to any armored units. So I usually switch to arb + horseman - the arb being the core to shred things, and rallying mass horseman just as a meat shield until the melee thins out and you can right click the horse on their ranged units. Though tbh probably spears better than horseman for this, but I'm too lazy to build barracks
@@emissarygw2264 I don't think Crossbow is a good counter for knights in castle, they only do 20 damage including the bonus, and need 2.1s to reload. Besides, people often get ranged armor upgrades in the castle age. In the end, It does 7 damage per second to knights which is not too much better than Maa. The only time I find crossbows difficult to deal with is in urban warfare when enemy crossbows are in the middle of buildings.
@@lovrohadzic4261 noob choose China is choosing to lose, china only starts to rock when you master their mechanics, which is very difficult. China has the lowest win rate in low elo for a reason. I'd choose abbasid - the best boomer civ, if not play aggressively.
@@arthurw2059 winrate in low elo isn't that important tbh, in low elo you should be focusing on what you're doing and focus on decision making, not the winrate of a civ and how you will lose 5 out of 6 games instead of 4 out of 6 games with a different civ. I don't disagree with Abbasid being the best boomer civ, it's a fine choice for a beginner, but I thing you're blowing the complexity of China way out of proportion, as I think someone willing to master China would have a rough time, but would eventually learn it if he focuses on the right things
OK, china indeed is a popular choice for turtle in base. I don't play China but I think I know why, their tower and TC and keep are stronger and they build walls and buildings faster. Besides, their eco is not that trader focus like Mongol or Abbasid, so they don't have to go out to protect their trade route.
22:18 - I thought horseman/spear always beats knight/archer, as the archers are slow and the horseman/spear can dive them and the knights can't protect because of the spears.
Horsemen are faster than spears so they’ll slam into the knights unless microed while the French guy moves his knights back and forth and stopping horsemen while the archers are kiting and picking off spearmen. Once all the spearmen are dead your horsemen are slaughtered by knights. It only works if you have an overwhelming number against the knights. Nothing always beats anything. You ever tried 50 spears vs 50 knights? Yeah unless you’re Abbasid with phalanx the spears still lose
@@jasonyun1158 it's a micro and numbers game... If they slowly advance with horse right in front of the spears, then the archers have to target fire spears while kiting back which is easy to misclick. And they run the same speed as spears so the horse + spear mass is slowly closing the distance with each shot. If you can't get the spear count low enough before they close the gap then it gets reallllly rough. And it's tough because spears are so much cheaper than knights, they should be starting with 2-3x as many spears as knights. At a certain point you need to commit by shift clicking all 30 spears and then letting the archers stand there without kiting, and the knights a move. While the opponent only needs to a move the whole blob
@@emissarygw2264 bro youre telling me horses move at the same speed as spears? wrong. horsemen have faster movement speed than scouts lol. you think the knight civ is not going to micro their knights as well? have you actually played a game of AOE? if i was a french player, i would keep my knights and move with my archers forward first getting my first shot in or if its not favorable looking for another angle to shoot from. you charge with everything "one blob" the horsemen will be faster than spears and reach my line first. as soon as i see the horsemen charge i will pull my archers back and send in my knights to lance charge your horsemen which will kill alot of your horsemen unless you pull back. if you do pull back you get peppered with arrows, if you dont all your horsemen takes heavy damage while doing nothing to my knights. i pull away right when the spears are about to reach the knights, when the spears are up forward while youre horsemen are blocked or bad condition due to my knights, my archers in the back shoots your spears while i kite my knight back infront of my archers. if you have done nothing to mess with the french eco, you are now at a disadvantage. "its more mircro" no it aint lol shift right clicking spears with archers aint hard. and even if it is 4~5 more clicks, the payout is great and you win the game over it slowly. ofc its a micro and numbers game but have you played a game yet? have you never been harassed by a french main past gold? why dont you think more pro players go for that comp then? get real buddy play the game with your hands not your mouth
@@jasonyun1158 lol what? I'm a french player, so unlike you I don't need to imagine what it would be like "if I was a french player". Yeah I play knight/archer against horse/spear and I win my share of games. Also lose plenty of games vs it, so I know exactly what the downsides are and what can go right/wrong. What you described works for the first few seconds of the engagement, but then because archers need to stop to shoot, the a-moved spears catch up and it turns into a melee brawl. To answer your question about why you don't see "more" pros go for that comp - obviously it's because pros have incredible micro/APM, which is what it takes to make knight/archer really shine. Whereas in leagues all the way up to plat, spear/horse is just a way simpler comp to manage. Let's compare the micro for horse/spear vs knight archer. Archer player - Simultaneously control the knights to repeatedly charge horse and pull back before spears, while stutter stepping and target firing archers every 2 seconds. When it closes to melee, shift-click ALL the spears while they mill around mixed up with the horse, and hope to god you didn't accidentally shift click a horse because if you did then you waste at least 1 volley and have to re-shiftclick every spear again. Spear/horse player - A-move the spears, then forget they exist. Your only job is to control the horse - just click them around in front of the spears to force the archers to target fire. When it closes to melee, just a-move everything and trust in god.
Just a guess but mongols also build a lot of cavalry and their keshig heavy cav heal after every attack, so i feel like we would be building a lot more of a variety of units against them, or more defensively? Take this with a grain of salt as i said only a guess
this will only apply to dry oasis and other dumb af starvation maps that nobody should play, if you play on normal maps its quite impossible to deny all resources thus match takes longer and is more fun. Remember we play for fun not to grind imaginary score in 10 minute grind matches

The micro explanation during the fights was clutch. Thanks
This is your best guide by far, builds are easy to keep up with but with stuff like this it gives us a better understanding of how the game is played

Nice guide. More than a build order. One of the best guides on youtube atm.
Good guide. Learned a lot without any fluff

can you make a guide how to play online 3vs3 4vs4.... its allways 1vs1 on youtube.... i never play that or my friends

whats the difference between 6 food 2 gold and 7 food 4gold start?
