All of the original vaqueros that started working the King ranch were from Cruillas Tamualipas Mexico, Where my great grandfather had a cattle ranch and many great hands come from. Great to see my brothers keep that tradition alive! God bless all of you
My uncle, Emert Crocker, was the division manager for the Norias and I have fond memories of spending my summers down there with him. I fell in love with huevos rancheros and pan de campo when i was 7.
I still dream of this lifestyle, though my travels are in the cab of a truck. A latter day cowboy of sorts. I still get to see places most others can only imagine seeing. 90% of my travels are from Texas to Washington, so i go from the deserts to the mountains every other week.

My father, mother, grandmother and aunt were hired by the Barclays to come work for them in 1944. They were form Guatemala my grandmother was the head chef for a hotel in Guatemala City, the Barclays were on vacation and were guest of the hotel. They loved my grandmothers cooking and offered her a job in the U.S. she agreed to take the job but only if she can bring her family with her. They gave my grandmother, aunt and parents a first-class airline ticket with Pam Am airlines a green card and a work permit. I looked up my family’s ancestry and actually have a copy of how my family came to this country in 1944. My parents were very proud that they came to this country legally and became American citizens, they worked very hard for the king family. I could go on and on but it would take up too much space.
That’s pretty much the history of the Kiñenos (King Ranch Vaqueros). In 1850s, Captain King bought land in south Texas, he needed cattle so he traveled to Tamaulipas border town with new established Mex/US border, the Mexican vaqueros/ranchers offered it but with the condition of employment due to a drought in their area n the cattle was dying of thirst/hunger. King bought the cattle and employed the Tamaulipas vaqueros. Captain King didn’t know anything about ranching and cattle and the first kiñenos taught him Ranching and Cattle. I went to school in Kingsville and my grandparents are on both side of the border (Texas and Tamaulipas). Not all of King Ranch is peace and love. The ranch has been accused of hustling original Mexican ranchers of their land by doing some hustling with their land and taken them with their attorneys to court and taken their land but that’s history.
Sorry that in most peoples minds when they think texas cowboy they think old white dude. Its cause of the media, hollywood and education or lack thereof. This type of hard salt of the earth work is what made this state great. Keep the traditions alive perserv history for future generations.
