In the beginning, this is what UA-cam was about, doing what your wanted, because you enjoyed it. And it's what it needs to be, so your advice it excellent. If you do this because you enjoy it, it will never matter if it's successful or not, and it doesn't need to. You will not care of subscribers, or views, or anything. You actually articulated very clearly to people who want to get on UA-cam business. from outsiders perspective, if I could add what I think, there are high competition going on between UA-camrs; people get missleading information or basics so, we don't give likes, and referring to others. you think they only foul speaking to you on their comment, they also insult the audience pretending to be as if you said it.. other times trying to make it politically infested to offense this group or that group. even your show or others has nothing to do with politics what's so ever. what I am trying to say is to learn and give support to educators, is bit a challenge. my conclusion to that there seems UA-cam internal conflict going on. I bet, they steal each others aides !!!. good advice.
Great video. All that you said also applies to being self-employed. I was a seller on Amazon for a few years and it's exactly the same as you said in the video.
I for one am very glad that I found your channel although the learning curve was quite sharp. It took me awhile to realize that not all of your videos are serious. Your tech advice I feel is making me a 100% better computer person. It has been very helpful in just the few months since the algorithm crossed our paths. I was the kind of person that made fun of the kids in comp class when I was in H.S. back in the early/mid 80's. Now I learn from you and pass iy on to my 13yo who wants to be a UA-camr. I fully intend to have him watch this video. Thanks for all the advice you give. P.S. the other one I listen to all the time now is 'The Tech Guy' Leo Laport, he is cool too.
When it comes to people wanting to start gaming channels, they can only reach so far and it’s not always guaranteed they will become the next Pewdiepie. It’s trickier for those getting in entertainment related content since not everyone is into video games. As a gamer myself, I don’t feel tempted to make gaming channel. I’d post a few clips now and then just for archival purposes, but I can’t see myself doing full on livestreams when I could be drawing art and selling it rather than doing something that feels a little too easy for me. If I had to come up with something to do on UA-cam, I’d rather do something similar to what you’re doing, Thio. Your channel has taught me quite a bit about Apple products and I think what you do is a great contribution to a widespread audience. I like to listen to many opinions regarding iPhones, computers, and technology in general so that I have a better understanding of the devices I use almost everyday. I’m glad you made this channel because you’re easy to listen to and have provided a lot of useful tips and information. 👍
That was a pretty thorough description of what it's like to work as a youtuber. I hope it reaches a lot of people who are thinking about doing it. One aspect of it you didn't touch on was travel costs. Some youtubers have to travel to film their stuff, like ghost hunters and urban explorers. There is an amazing youtube channel called Exploring With Fighters and he travels internationally to shoot amazing sites. You can just imagine how expensive it must be for him to maintain his youtube channel. I would say most though are lucky enough that they can shoot at home in their on home studio setups. I just found your site and I really enjoy it. I really like the Windows 10 Home tips. That's really useful for me. Good luck with your channel!
I totally understand what you say. I'm a crafter and people tell me all the time I should sell my crafts.. craft fairs, Etsy, etc. I just say I enjoy making things now. If I sold them, it would be more like work.
Bottom line: @ 8:30 (I think). Joe, I like the way you talk and explain things. Plus, and a BIG + is your editing skills. Looks SUPER professional - something I would show my bosses. Rgrds from SF. -Michael
I feel you deserve respect! You obviously work hard at this. Although I may not watch a lot of your videos, I've watched some probably many of your videos. Thank you for making this video because at least I get an idea that it's not all sunshine. I wish it were. I believe you are highly qualified to speak with experience and expertise. Thank you for your honesty. This really gave me some perspective from a real professional about this. Of course there are professional You Tubers like yourself. But this is the first time to hear what it is like. Glad I'm subscribed. Your brilliant! :)
I can testimony as someone that for some years have published videos on a regular basis that's very easy to underestimate. From the outside it looks all fun and good, but the moment you turn it into not even a job, but just an habit, it starts to weight on you, because even if literally nobody comments on your videos, you can still see the views and the like / dislikes, you feel the "pressure" of being watched, you feel people's expectations even if it's just all in your head as you don't really see in person any of your viewers, it's something that can be very taxing on your nerves after a while, and if you're someone that occasionally suffers from even mild anxiety, it can gets really stressing. So yeah, it's not something for everyone, not as job at least.
Keep up the Great work Buddy. I haven't missed a video since I stumbled across your channel a few years ago. I can't image starting my day without my coffee and your latest installment :D
Joe I follow u. Dont forget through redundancy u seem to be an expert (a natural) in what ever u present. I did not realize u have been doing this for so long, but it did not surprise me. I am an independent also (different field). What you have done with this presentation is accurately explain to the person thinking of being an independent the pros and cons, even tax advantage or disadvantage. Way to go, I could not have done it better myself, and I do it for a living.
It's very much analogous to a writer as a job where you want to write books that appeal to readers and get good reviews from critics. You still have a publisher to satisfy and meet schedules. It all comes down to whether you, as a creator, believe you can come up with reasonably consistent ideas that will work over your career. As an aside, if you had Universal Basic Income, that could help during those uncertain times. Yang2020!
Joe, would you please make a follow up video talking about UA-cam as a hobby. For example, do you enjoy being a celebrity? Is UA-cam good for creative people such as musicians or woodworkers who just want to show the world their talents? How much time should a person considering starting a channel expect to spend to make a 20 minute video?
ThioJoe, I have been watching you for sometime now, (more then 7 or more months) I like your content and the way you explain things here. Keep it going and I wiish you the best!
Thank you for this balanced review. I’d like to suggest a possible topic for future videos. There are a number of videos on UA-cam ad revenue, but I haven’t seen anything that talks about other revenue streams - Instagram, sponsorships, etc.
Well said bro! Reality is that nothing good, truly unique, interesting and amazing ever comes easy! Success takes work and perseverance! Love your vids! You taught me to initiate developer mode on my android... and like yours my phone runs twice as fast... Keep up doin what you doin bro!

If you want to get into youtube for the fun of it.. you can always do it. Just make some vids, do what you want, and go with it. But, trying to make it big on youtube is like trying to win the lottery now. There's so many channels flooding the platform with cruft every day that trying to get noticed is like a drop of water trying to start a tsunami in the ocean. That's why an entire industry has formed where folks can pay to get fake comments, thumbs up, and try to force going viral. If you don't have something giving you that kickstart with a viral (eg: being featured on a talk show or some other platform that draws tons of attention), then you'll just fly under the radar. So, early on.. content isn't king. Getting noticed is king. Once you get noticed, then, if you have the great content that keeps attention.. then you'll get the ball rolling and maybe over time you can start to earn a living. The problem is two-fold, though... 1) great ideas are often hard to keep going .. you may have a great idea for a channel, and can come up with like 10 vids to leverage it. But, eventually you run out of ideas and run out of steam. (EG: it's like when a really great comedian gets their own show.. they start to run out of material, b/c the pace at whcih the show demands new material is insane) Everything eventually "jumps the shark", where folks watching that were initially impressed start to want more and more or continue with amazing and fresh ideas.. but you hit burn-out and have to rehash or you can't keep upping the stakes.. then your audience turns on you or gets bored and moves on. So, really creative channels have a shelf-life of like a year... and that might be the amount of time it takes just to get noticed and start making it.. so, right as you start making some good cash, you are burned out and out of ideas and die. You spent a year of your life pouring your soul into a channel just to barely make a buck from it, and when you do you can't keep it up anymore. 2) tons of channels are network-owned, and the networks (like game publishes) hire people to notice trends, then create their own channels to exploit the trends. The moment you come out with a channel that has a good idea.. a week later another channel shows up doing the same thing.. but the host is far more amazing then you are (b/c the network hired someone specificially for the role), the content is professionally done (b/c they have a production team), they kick it out way faster (b/c they have economies of scale and are doing this stuff for a living.. and now they're taking your idea and doing it for a living, but better).. so now everyone migrates from your channel to that channel. And you're left being pissed off, b/c nobody paid you for your great idea. They just stole it and your'e left int he dust. 3) youtube rewards a frantic pace.. not long-term creativity. Channels that take their time (eg: all week) to make a great 20 min vid can post the vid and find it being instantly demonetized for some unknown reason. Or, some company that youtube caters to decides to file a copyright strike against your video and it goes into "Take down" limbo until you can fight it out. The most monetization for vids is within the first 24-48 hours of being posted (when it's new, it shows up in everyone's feed, and word-of-mouth is getting around). So, if a company can lock up your video for that time (or, worse, get the monetization shoved over to them b/c they say you used some content of theirs so they should get the money of your hard work) then you're screwed. You get the video back up in several days.. the thrill is gone and you lost. 4) Due to the above 3 reasons.. many content creators have been pushed to this "daily puppy-mill" format.. where they just churn out easy-to-make content daily. Come up with a quick idea (sometimes rehashed from other channels... EG: many gaming channels just make vids all parroting the latest BS going on in AAA gaming.. Jim Sterling, YongYea, etc). Film yourself for an hour talking. Edit a 10 min vid (so you can have ads run before, during and after to maximize monetization).. then kick it to youtube. If it gets demonetized or striked, no bigee.. you got another vid coming tomorrow (or maybe more coming the same day). So, to make a living, these very creative channels in the past have just become glorified v-log channels. Instead of being craftsman making amazing, specialized content.. they're now all just kicking out boxes from the factory. and their boxes all look a lot alike, but you choose to sit in the one that has certain markings you like on it over others. UA-cam itself fuels all this by screwing with their algorithm to promote... 1) more family friendly channels by demonetizing vids with swear words ... b/c youtube doesn't want to make it easier for sponsors and channels to get together. Instead they just want their dumbed-down algorithm to throw any advert at any vid and no worry about it being inappropriate. So, youtube changed the algorithm to punish content creators. 2) rewarding channels that kick out boxes more instead of spending time fashioning really great things 3) youtube seems to now acting like an Invisible Hand by promoting channels that magically pop-up overnight and explode into success.. and the channels seem to be cater-made to whatever is being presented.. like a network tv show, not a creator. This has led some to think that youtube itself is now becoming a creator.. by simply analyzing what's trending on it, and then making its own channels with hired "creators" and making it seem like it's an independant creator. So, trying to get into youtube now to make money... 1) you are a drop of water in the ocean trying to get noticed 2) which is why many channels join a network (which takes all the cash while making you do all the work) or hire companies to make them go viral with fake comments and thumbs-up 3) you have to kick out daily content to get noticed due to youtube's algorithm 4) you have to keep doing soemthign half-way fresh, even though you will get stretched thin and burned out eventually 5) if someoen notices what you're doing (eg: you win the lottery and go viral) everyone else will quickly jump on the band-wagon and shut you out This is why many channels try to just use youtube as a marketing platform to promote what they really do.. EG: streaming games or chats or what-not. Also, to get around youtube demonetizing them, some channels will seek out a sponsor that fits them, then bake the adverts into their vids directly. UA-cam gets stuck with the video hosting fees while the creator and sponsor reap all the rewards. But, it's not just you sitting there making a vid real fast and then the money rolls in. You have to spend a lot of time off-video managing your channel, looking for competitors that can overtake you, looking for ways to evolve, fighting burn-out, struggling with demonitization and copyright strikes out of the blue, etc. Early youtube was like early Ebay. You could just throw something up there and make a fortune. But, these days, everyoen can throw something up there. So, it's hard to get noticced, hard to stay noticed, and hard to fight off everyone wanting a piece of your pie.
I have to write some kind of an article for school project about Multiple Careers (specifically youtubers) There is not that much of an article that i really understand, so it's really helpful that you made this video not too long ago lmao. Thanks Thio!
I get what you mean about people being impressed while you think in the back of your mind it’s not really a big deal. I worked in radio at the #1 station in a top 30 market and I was there for quite some time. I always got those comments from people who thought it was amazing, but it wasn’t really all that special. But you do get a little bit of an ego boost from that praise, so there is that. I now have a job that is crappy in the world’s eyes but in my mind is 100x’s better than working in radio and makes me happy.
Joe Mr Thio, Nice to connect with you again, I love your personality and everything about your channel especially tips about growing UA-cam. Please talk more about that here.
The one point about being isolated can be cured by doing some on-site video work that you later incorporate into your video, kind of like being a news reporter.
It is worth it if you have something to share to the world that is interesting and to share your passion as well. But again I really can't rely on youtube. I am a full time magician and it is really tough to be a fulltime youtuber..really takes time and dedication.
Thio, this was a very interesting video. I am still at the fledgling stage (280 subs), but this is just a 'hobby' for me at this point since I make a living wage with a professional day job. I can't even refer to it as a 'hobby job' since I am not yet monetized and have not seen a penny come in yet - just the purchase cost of higher quality equipment going out - which is what you should expect with a hobby. I particularly like your last point, where if you get into this thinking you will be a definitive success, then that will only lead to disappointment. I am being realistic about the chances my Channel has of being a second income (but hopefully a retirement job some day), in that I take nothing for granted. For example, I recently purchased the Domain name that matches my Channel name (PE4Doers), however I will be paying for it year-by-year since I have no idea if it will last beyond the year I am in. Also, I have been really surprised so far that a couple of video I thought the least of, have somehow struck a note with particular interest groups, on the opposite side of the coin, how I put so much effort into one (or a series) thinking it will be a hit, only to learn that nobody is interested. It can definitely play with your mind. Thanks again for all your insights. David Rivera

Thio, one thing I'm going to point out that you didn't include that I feel like you could/should have is if your working for someone already, and you want to become a UA-camr full time and quite your job and hope that your UA-cam channel is going to sky rocket within a few days or so. Don't do that, for one, if you are hoping that your UA-cam channel sky rocketing within a couple days or so making huge amounts of money from ad revenue, don't just rely on that idea and quite your job immediately. Plus, the idea of JUST relying on UA-cam and revenue is a horrible idea on it's own, set up a possible PayPal and patreon, on top of going to other sites like vlare, twitch, Dailymotion, Vimeo, so if UA-cam ends up going down the toilet spontaneously, your rear end is hopefully safe.
Great Advice... I don’t think ppl realize all that’s involved. Sometimes, sometimes... you can see how the isolation is taken it’s toll. They start shaming their viewers for not sharing or super-chats.. then they wonder why they’ve lost viewers. Not cool.. ✌🏼🤓💫
Another GREAT video! Thanks. I would love to see a list of YOUR FAVORITE ("Best") videos and, conversely, a few of your videos which you think "sucked" (weren't successful). Your opinion of your work is of interest to me. Which made you proudest and which made you feel were duds?
Thanks, Joe. Great overview of what your job consists of. I only know of one UA-camr who told us how much money they actually make. What I wonder is where are all the ads that generate any money so that you and UA-cam get paid. Other than your sponsored videos, I cannot see how you made money. BTW, is there any correlation between length of the video and remuneration? Last comment: Keeping them shorter is more likely to get viewers who watch all the way through. With the proliferation of UA-camrs it has gotten so I no longer even watch many of those I used to faithfully watch all the way through. Just don't have the time.

I enjoy your channel because of your honesty. You have a handle on what the regular Jo(e) looks for in tech/software reviews. Please, keep going!
I tried to find one thing I couldn't agree with.
Couldn't
Great video. All that you said also applies to being self-employed. I was a seller on Amazon for a few years and it's exactly the same as you said in the video.
There is one negative that was not mentioned in the video copy right law three strikes you’re channel gets taken down.
This is one of the best video I watched on your channel, It's just soo informative
Depends if u feel it’s right then go for it
I totally understand what you say.
I'd only keep it as a hobby not a full job. Not stable and secure enough and who knows if youtube will be around in the next 10 - 20 years.
Great content Thio! Your channel has inspired me to become a better content provider on my channel!

I may be wrong as well but UA-cam is somehow destroying it's beautiful algorithm it used to have @ThioJoe.
You know what,, for years I've never missed any of your videos and your videos are worth watching! This time I'm expecting for your reply!!!
7:34 My school projects in a nutshell
Always enjoy your videos.
Pretty good video. I have seen some UA-camrs make videos on how they make videos. I was surprised at how much work goes into it. Kudos.
Great video Thio, really interesting and insightful.
I do it as a hobby, thanks for the tips ThioJoe.
2) rewarding channels that kick out boxes more instead of spending time fashioning really great things
3) youtube seems to now acting like an Invisible Hand by promoting channels that magically pop-up overnight and explode into success.. and the channels seem to be cater-made to whatever is being presented.. like a network tv show, not a creator. This has led some to think that youtube itself is now becoming a creator.. by simply analyzing what's trending on it, and then making its own channels with hired "creators" and making it seem like it's an independant creator.
So, trying to get into youtube now to make money...
1) you are a drop of water in the ocean trying to get noticed
2) which is why many channels join a network (which takes all the cash while making you do all the work) or hire companies to make them go viral with fake comments and thumbs-up
3) you have to kick out daily content to get noticed due to youtube's algorithm
4) you have to keep doing soemthign half-way fresh, even though you will get stretched thin and burned out eventually
5) if someoen notices what you're doing (eg: you win the lottery and go viral) everyone else will quickly jump on the band-wagon and shut you out
This is why many channels try to just use youtube as a marketing platform to promote what they really do..
Very well said bro!!!!!!!!

I have to write some kind of an article for school project about Multiple Careers (specifically youtubers)
There is not that much of an article that i really understand, so it's really helpful that you made this video not too long ago lmao.
We need a new platform, UA-cam is done now.
Food for thought. , very good info you provided as always. Keep up the good work
Good advice and very down to earth about expectations. thanks
A Totally eye opener for beginners...who dreams to become a youtuber thanks man ..for sharing
This is an amazing video!!! All extremely vital information. Extremely risky to base majority of your income on as shaky a platform as social media.
Thank you for the video. Just wish more UA-camrs would be as honest as you.
Thank you for sharing this and it was very encouraging!!!!👍👍
I applaud your honesty.
“ adpocolpse?” 😂
... And you are there.

It’s clever. Never heard of it before
Thank you, great video it really helped me while i'm planning to start a YT beside my full time job :)
Just goes to show how low society has fallen, when a child want to "grow up" to sit in a room......stare into a camera....and have one-sided conversations with millions of people. I weep for the future.
Because UA-cam is a buzzword.
_I cleaned toilets at Harvard. Wow Harvard_
Always love your videos. You are so interesting.
Great video... Very informative and interesting. Well done xx
do not, i repeat,""do not stop making videos joe!!, ""the majority of people who make vid's on you tube are a disaster and i do mean """a disaster"", ""i have watched thousands of vids on the sites of ego mainiacs!!"", ""talk about cenered!!, ""to know your subject is the most important thing and for sure joe does know what he is talking about and i have great respect for him!!"".
""I am 69yrs of age , ""i have seen an awful lot!!", """what i like about joe is that he has a sense of the cheeky and i love that!!"", ""(long may he post on youtube)!!"" ""good for him.
⭐️ I really enjoy most of your videos. Thank you sir 😎👍
Great info bro, very, very useful. Keep going
I appreciate all you do!
Thanks for explain so well the situation!!!
Great Advice... I don’t think ppl realize all that’s involved. Sometimes, sometimes... you can see how the isolation is taken it’s toll. They start shaming their viewers for not sharing or super-chats.. then they wonder why they’ve lost viewers. Not cool.. ✌🏼🤓💫
I like your honesty.
Love your content... Keep up the good work...
The reason people are "impressed" when you are a youtuber is because you are not obligated to punch in to a 9 to 5 job. They see that freedom as huge.
Well, you know financially exactly what your worth. An entrepreneur is a person always looking for a job.
This is my whole life on 1 video 😭
Hi Tho Joe I always enjoy your videos
I am an old subscriber but I never comment on any videos but this time I really thought I need to say it you really are one of the best youtuber & I really like watching your videos it's just that I live in India so most times when you upload videos I am sleeping so I can't comment in one hour.
But anyways good work I'll never get boarded of your face.
Ignore the haters & fanboys keep working.
Very nice thanks . Maybe you could make a video about the internet/websites apps in China viz-a-viz the west , things like Wechat, weibo , taobao, alipay instead of facebook , amazon, paypal. Not sure how popular that would be since many chinese people can't watch youtube! but it would be very interesting
A comment to appreciate your effort. Keep it up 👍
this is a great video to the people from going poor and the big disappointment that life doesn't always go your way....
