One thing I love about Denzel is he never falters. He sticks with his guns and I'm sure he's also sick and tires of people constantly bringing up "fixing the race" issue. I'm just glad he sticks to his belief.

As a writer, I have to highly recommend Denzel Washington’s movie Unstoppable. It’s an excellent example of how to write a movie, where everything in the movie has a part to play, everything is there for a reason, it’s spot-on perfectly plotted in regards to pacing, etc. and it’s just a fun movie and you know exactly what you’re going to get when you sit down to watch it: a runaway train endangering lives. Fun movie, very entertaining, and I love Denzel’s character in it.

His graduation speech speaks a lot to me. My daughter (technically step) struggles with goals and CONSISTENCY.
Consistency is the biggest thing that people don't account for. The only way to make a habit...a habit (good or bad), is how often do you actually do it. And we continously have to battle her on this and she just refuses or doesn't see that. And of course, that is literally the one thing that's holding her back!

I'm a single father to three. My wife died. My life revolves around providing for my kids, both financially and mentally. They need to understand life. I have many more kids who aren't mine, but they know they can live in my home for as long as they need. I don't judge. I ask questions, they provide the answers. I'm not financially wealthy, but I'm a rich man. I will die happy knowing the children I've raised and I've helped will make the world a little bit better by being a part of it.
Final note. Everyone needs a good mother in their life. There is a nurturing factor I can't give, and luckily my wife stuck around for a large part of it before the good Lord decided it was her time. We all miss her. But I'm still here, and will be until it's my time. I'm making pot roast tonight.

His speech at the end, made my cry...If more people had this kind of mindset and wisdom, we could live in a really better world. And i love the fact that he talking about consistency in work and not motivation. Motivation comes and goes, consistency is about commitment to set a goal and work every day on it til you reached it. and then set another goal and so on. Thanks Alex, i needed this. And thanks to Mr. Denzel Washington.

Denzel's humility, wisdom, and blunt honesty is a breath of fresh air in the cesspool of crap we get exposed to everyday, I really enjoyed your perspective on this. Oh and as an aside, the fact that you've only seen Training Day is an absolute travesty - you literally have a movie reaction channel and could make September "Denzel Washington Month" 😁😁. Deja Vu, American Gangster, and The Equalizer are a few of my personal favorites.

I get the “father” concept… grew up in a ghetto… was the only one of my friends that had a “father”in my home but for much of my childhood he was working, drinking, or off to war… I went and found a family on the street too… and it’s a miracle I’m not locked up or dead…

I think it’s more the principle of being present. My dad left when I was 4 (still saw him 1x/month and so on. He definitely did NOT have any impact. I was fortunate that we lived door to my grandparents. They were young enough to basically “raise” me. I even moved in for several years cuz my mom worked, then had nite school, homework on the weekends etc. I was scared of my papa but in a good way; he was a gentle man too. Last thing I dreaded was disappointing them. My mom’s youngest brother still lived there, so it was like having an older brother. He’d take me on motorcycle rides and such.
It can take a village to raise a child. I’m thankful and fortunate that I had my grandparents to be there for me.
My mom remarried but to an alcoholic who really didn’t want me around. It was abusive. It did give me 2 sisters!
His story is very sad and heartbreaking, but no excuse to continue the cycle (He did not treat my sisters bad…but he hardly acknowledged their presence).
I Made an important vow to myself one day (some time in HS).
1)I’m moving out the day after graduation
      2) I’ll NEVER treat anyone, especially my future children, the way I had been treated
#1 didn’t happen cuz he split my senior year. So protective of my mom..but it’ll all came to a halt overnight.
#2- I’ve kept my vow, my promise to myself. I’m relationships, I told myself in HS “Right now I DONT have a choice but to be around him and live in the same house. But once I’m (or him) is outta here, I will NEVER put up with being treated like that. Don’t care if we I’m debt $1 million and have kids (or no kids). I REFUSE to let ANYONE treat me like this ever again.
I’ve kept that promises to myself. I’d been engaged several times in my 20’s but it wasn’t the right one (all good ppl).
I met my spouse 3 weeks before my 29th bday. We both instantly knew each of us was eight for the other. We moved in within 3 weeks of meeting, & he properly at 5 weeks. Got married 6 months later. Within our 1st yr, we bought a house, for married, won custody of his 2 biological children, and had my baby.
We just celebrated 18 yrs of marriage, approaching 19 years together.
His childhood was rough also. We both shared our vision for our kids. Like, we were not going to repeat or perpetuate what happened to us.
So, yes, having a father in the home is important. But if he’s not available to you, it’s like he’s not there. Some of us will self reflect and refuse to participate and will consciously BREAK that cycle.
Everyone is different, so what works for one person may not work for another. I know a person, who despite despising their father figure growing up, has literally turned out to be just like him.

We need to be practicing what Elvis was singing about in 'If I Could Dream.'
Sometimes the father is not a good role model.
But, every young man needs a good role model, i.e., grandfather, uncle, cousin, pastor, scout leader or the school janitor.
I never use to believe this but it does take a village to raise a child.

A Denzel response to a news reporter after a piece of fake news about him sticks in my mind and has helped me make and be comfortable with turning my back the mainstream media "You can choose not to read a newspaper and be ill-informed" . At this point the reporter was nodding enthusiastically, " or you can choose to read a newspaper and be mis-informed". At which point Denzel raised his eyebrow and the reporter didn't know what to say.
That is the conundrum that faces us, be ill-informed or mis-informed. We can see from the clips how the media tries to skew the narrative (misinformation). I chose the former. With limited information I am limited in the facts I can use to come to decisions. With the wrong information I would make wrong decisions because I'm not using facts.

I really respect those views. Your most efficient role models (both in good and in bad) are your parents, grandparents, (older) siblings, everyone who takes care for you and you look up to. If you don't have anyone like that, you keep searching for one, because people need role models. And If you have a bad one, it can lead to something very bad. This is kinda off subject, but close enough relative - for me the lack of a truly present and participating father is an issue that I carry with me always. My grandfather was kinda a father figure for me, but he died when I was 18. Also he was very old, so there was only so much he could do. So I've realized that male attention is something that I really have a chronic need for. It's maybe a small thing what comes to society, but it can be quite destructive thing personally. So what comes to parents, it's vital to be there for your children. Whatever you can give to keep them in a healthy path of life, is great.

  • @phillippi2

This makes me want to hear your reaction to Thomas Sowell. He's been talking about this since he started teaching in the '60s. There is a common denominator between crime and intelligence; the amount of attention that the child receives from BOTH parents. If the parents pay more attention to their kids, they will become more intelligent and become substantially less likely to commit crimes.

Systemic poverty leads to desperation. Desperation leads to crime. And crime leads to the issues Denzel describes. It's not entirely "in the home." The system is and has been rigged since the founding of this nation. Sure, there's an element in the home, but you can't just throw down a blanket answer like that. It's far more complex. Denzel is an amazing actor and a real inspiration, but he's smarter than this. He's giving the answers some PR person told him to give.

My curse is being too grateful for what I have, and so I lack the desire to reach higher.
I mean ... adorable family (wife, kid, dog), nice little house in a safe neighborhood, good salary, generally good health, very positive relations with all family (mine and my wife's), friendly neighbors, loyal circle of friends, fridge full of food, closet full of clothes, no bad debts, and a complete lack of enemies.
Seriously... other than winning the lottery, how could a life be any better?
What's crazy is that I have been through plenty of things to claim victimhood, and it wasn't until the last couple of years that I realized that *yes* they kind of messed me up psychologically, but I never paid any attention to it. Instead I focused on being the kind of person I wanted to be, and having fun along the way.

I also always wanted to be a US Marine, since I can I can remember, my dad said since I was 4, I don’t even remember then, my mom said since 5 she remembers, so before I can remember, 100%, what I wanted, and that guided me. I could’ve went down bad roads, but never did. As it woulda worked against what I wanted, purpose, honor, true brotherhood, unlike gangs of various sorts, seen a lot of them, and the results. Funnily enough, one person, of smaller, at the time gang, messed with and attacked my older sister, o stabbed him in the thigh, more towards the inside…yes I knew where the artery was, as result of living the USMC, and the war I. The pacific at 9 and younger. Told him if he didn’t listen, I’d cut his artery, the pocket knife had about a 3 inch blade, I buried into his thigh, on the inside of femur, he screamed and cried, but was 6 years older and trying to rape my sister, he was about to die that day, lol. That’s one thing you don’t do, mess with a man’s family. I’m no hero, just a good American. Protecting his own. Because of stuff like that, or my service have said I’m a hero, nah, I came home. I’m just a regular guy that served, was lucky and good enough to come home, and protect my family, that should be normal. Not make you a hero, a hero don’t come home, cause he saved others.

When I was a kid, I once asked my dad why some people have darker skin than others. Kids question everything, because kids want to understand how everything works. And I was genuinely curious about this. My dad answered simply that it had to do with where their ancestors come from. Those with ancestors from areas around the equator, where they get more sun, will generally have darker skin. And I think that's honestly the only true way people of different skin colors are any different from one another. As I've always believed, human beings are human beings, plain and simple, and skin color means nothing to me. I judge people just as MLK always wanted - by the content of their character. In fact, the way I see it, ANY attention drawn to a particular race is a form of racism, no matter what it is. We just need to treat one another like human beings rather than different classes of people based on skin color. This also comes from my Christian faith, where we're all children of God. We're basically all family. As such, we should love one another, put aside our differences, and focus more on what brings us together.

  • @Plastikdoom

Yeah, this is good shit here. I don’t care what color anyone is, just don’t be a piece of shit as a person. Provide for your family, of you have one, try to help others, of you can, even if only a little bit, and helping them smile, just don’t be a bad person, basically. I love that he has his pretty down to earth views and sticks to them.

As a biologist, it is not really accurate that we are all one race. We are all one species, but not race. Its like domestic dogs, they are all one species, but nobody would argue that a terrier is the same as a malamut. There are enough biological differences between the various human races to warrant the distinction. For example black people that live up in northern countries are much more likely to get osteoporosis, while white people that live in southern countries are much more likely to develop skin cancer. Both of these are because white skin is more sensitive to the sun (we need the sun to produce vitamin D that allows our body to absorb calcium, so if we don't get enough, our bones get weaker).
There was also an issue a few years back in my area, where there were not enough vietnamese organ donors. The bodies of the vietnamese that needed the organs kept rejecting the implants of non-vietnamese donors. There are bunch of small differences like that, some of which can have significant medical impacts, so it is incorrect to say that race in humans is solely a social construct. Unfortunately, it has become so taboo to talk about this kind of thing that scientific research is being stifled and blocked for fear of being called racist. Ironically enough, minorities are the ones that suffer the most from this since our baseline medical knowledge in the West is on caucasians males. (I use caucasian here because europe is diverse enough that just saying White does not imply the right idea)

The most succesfull and the best dads i know come from single mother homes because they decided they would never end up like their dad, none of them have criminal dads or nothing like that but they didn't have a male role model on their side 99% of the time.
So even if the statistics says the odds are against you it's possible to make it and in i guess alot of cases stop blaming other people for your own failurs.
